Clatsop Weavers & Spinners
SKAMOKAWA The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guilds exhibit continues at Redmen Hall at 1394 W SR-4 in Skamokawa through Sept. 1. The theme of the exhibit is Its so nice to have a loom around the house will feature the practical side of weaving and spinning, showing hand spun and woven articles of use around the house. Rugs, towels, clothing, blankets, shawls, placemats and more will be displayed and most will be for sale. There will be weavers and spinners practicing their crafts during the weekends the exhibit is open and members of the Guild will be available for questions. School supply donations needed
PACIFIC COUNTY Project Pack2School is seeking community participation and donations to raise funds in order to purchase school supplies for low-income children in the Ocean Beach School District 101. This project is an opportunity for the community to give every child the best chance to start the school year off with confidence and dignity. One Act Festival
ILWACO The Peninsula Players annual One Act Festival opens on Friday, Aug. 23 for a two weekend run at the River City Playhouse. Three original and unpublished plays were chosen for this years festival. The festival will take place at the River City Playhouse, which is located next to the museum in Ilwaco. Evening performances beginning at 7 p.m. are scheduled for Aug. 23, Aug. 24, Aug. 30 and Aug. 31. Matinees are at 2 p.m., on Aug. 25 and Sept 1. The first is Bus Ride written by Cleborne Maddux and directed by Diane DeSeranno; The Happy Seed Soap Factory, was written by Joe Paliani is directed by Melissa Goldberg and The Crabapples, is written by Art Herring and is directed by Ed Ahlers. The festival is produced by Joyce Jones. All tickets will be $5 for these performances at the door.
Fireworks!
LONG BEACH Everyone is invited to come down to the Bolstad beach approach around 8:30 p.m. and 9 .m., on both Friday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Aug. 24 for fireworks after the lighted kite fly. Enjoy the kite festival and stay around for a beautiful fireworks show.

Chili cook-off
SURFSIDE Surfside Homeowners Association is holding their annual free chili cook off on Aug. 24 at Twin Lakes Park in Surfside beginning at 1 p.m. Bring a crockpot of your favorite chili and join the tasting contest. Kite museum auction
LONG BEACH Every year the World Kite Museum hosts an auction during the week of the Washington State International Kite Festival. This years is on Aug. 24 at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. Social hour is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., dinner is at 8 p.m., and the live auction starts at 9 p.m. This is the primary fundraiser for the museum for the year and all proceeds go to grow and improve the nations only kite museum, with one of the worlds largest collections of kites and kite related ephemera. The theme for this years auction is Red, Kite, and Blue so dress in your patriotic best or dress as your favorite kite! Prizes will be given for the best costume! Tickets are $25 each.
Waikiki Beach Concert
CAPE D The next Waikiki beach concert is at 7 p.m., Aug. 24 at Cape Disappointment State Park. This concert will feature the talents of The Ben Rice Band. Ben Rice brings real vintage blues into the modern era by twisting soul, roots blues and west coast blues with rockabilly, funk and rock. Rice is a virtuosi guitar player whose soulful voice and inventive twists on blues are creating a buzz in the industry. Rices last all original CD Pour Me Some Whiskey is being praised as being among the best CD releases from the Northwest playing along with some of the top musicians in the national blues scene. First picking up the guitar at five, he now has 18 years of playing, numerous awards, nominations, and a music degree from the University of Oregon. ILWACO and OCEAN PARK Award-winning author and journalist Jeff Burlingame will speak at two Timberland libraries on Saturday, Aug. 24. The subject is his new biography on former Washington State Senate icon, Sid Snyder, entitled Across the Aisles: Sid Snyders Remarkable Life in Groceries & Government. Burlingame will be at the Ilwaco Timberland Library from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and the Ocean Park Timberland Library from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park Timberland Libraries. Celebrate Master Gardener Program
MENLO Come to the Pacific County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 24, to celebrate the 40th birthday of the WSU Master Gardener program. Bring your stories of being a master gardener, attending a master gardener presentation, or calling WSU Extension to get a solution to a gardening question. WSU Master Gardener Programs started in Pierce and King counties and the first class was held in 1973. No one realized that the idea of training volunteers to provide other community members with research based solutions to gardening questions would spread to all 50 states and many other countries. Be a part of the celebration. Tell your stories, connect with former master gardeners, wish WSU Master Gardeners another 40 years of service, bring your questions or stop by to say hello.

Carnival for B&G
ILWACO On Aug. 26, Wyndham Resorts is sponsoring a carnival fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Black Lake campus at 404 School Road in Ilwaco. This event is to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula. The fun includes games, a bounce house, dunk tank, baked goods, face painting and more. All ages are welcome.
Burn Ban
PACIFIC COUNTY A burn ban is in effect for Pacific County and will remain in place through Sept. 30. The burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires in approved fire pits that are limited to 3-feet in diameter and 2-feet in height. Fires for debris disposal are not considered recreational and are not allowed under any circumstances. Please contact your local fire district for further information. Building Resilience
SEAVIEW How can we move from shame and vulnerability toward personal resilience? This question is the focus for NAMI Pacific Countys August program at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Leading the discussion will be Kat Erskine, who has spoken at Recovery and Resiliency trainings, and Barbara Bate, who is gathering stories of people connecting with each other in the midst of difficulties, including Vietnam prisoners of war. Shame tends to isolate people from each other, but shared support helps build resilience and can lead to further recovery. At the end of the program, NAMI members will talk about the plans for a support group and networking by phone and email. The program is free and open to anyone interested. Distribution of school supplies
PACIFIC COUNTY SNAP is a program established by Coastal Community Action Program to help low income children in Pacific County with back-to-school supplies. This year SNAP will send more than 600 children (K-12) to school with paper, pencils, pens, crayons, glue, pencil boxes, markers, folders, etc. Distribution will be Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CCAP, 324 Jackson St., Raymond; Aug 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at CCAP, 152 First Ave. in Ilwaco; and on Aug. 27 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Peninsula Baptist Church 23802 Pacific Hwy., Ocean Park. On Aug. 27 distribution will be part of a community fair and back-to-school carnival at Peninsula Baptist Church. Bluegrass concert
RAYMOND Bluegrass band Jeff Scroggins & Colorado will perform at the Raymond Theatre on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. If you like the combination of banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and bass along with good bluegrass music chances are youll like this five-member band featuring Jeff and his son, Tristan, who have won numerous contests and awards, including Jeff taking the top prize at the National Banjo Championship. Line dancing fun

ILWACO The Friends of The Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held Aug. 30, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the atrium in the old Ilwaco High School next to the football field. Some books are marked, all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and 50 cents for regular size paper. Fill your shopping bag with books on Sept. 1 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for just $3. LONG BEACH A variety of activities are set for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 to benefit the Harman family. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 31, come to the barrel races at the Peninsula Saddle Club, 6407 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. It is great entertainment for a bargain price. Then that evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., dont miss the surf and turf barbecue dinner and silent auction at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N Pacific Highway. Dinner has a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Finally on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., there is a cowgirl breakfast at the rodeo grounds followed by more barrel races from noon to 3 p.m. This is a chance for the community to support one of our own. Jessi is a special little girl who is working hard to get back to her spirited self again. Lets show her how proud we are of her hard work by making this a successful weekend.
Tattoo & Piercing Convention
LONG BEACH A not-to-be-missed event is coming to the Long Beach Peninsula on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the Chautauqua Lodge in Long Beach. On Aug. 31, the show opens at noon with live bands playing all day, live tattoo booths, vendors, a beer garden, face painting and more. From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., there will be the Tattoo Contest and Miss One Nation Pinup Girl contest. At 10 p.m., the tattoo of the day will be announced. On Sept. 1 the show again opens at noon. There will be live bands, vendors, beer garden, etc. from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., is the tattoo contest; at 3 p.m., a bike show and finally at 10 p.m., the tattoo of the day will be announced. Chinook Arts Festival
CHINOOK The Chinook Arts Festival will be held Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and Sept. 2 on Pacific Highway in Chinook. This is a juried arts and crafts show, featuring glass art, woodworking, photography, jewelry, pottery, oil and watercolors and much more. Buzzards Breath chili
CATHLEMET The 10th annual Labor Day Buzzards Breath Chili Cook-off is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet. This is a great event and one for competitors and the public alike. In addition to the cook-off contest there will be a flat-bread throwing contest, yellow ducky race, beer garden, raffles, live music and more. The cost is $7 for public tasting. If you want to compete it is $15 for the Tolbert sanctioned championship competition Texas Red Chili. There is no fee for entering home-style chili, but call to confirm requirements. Poker paddle
SOUTH BEND Its time for the 8th annual Come and Play on Labor Day Poker Paddle in South Bend. On Monday, Sept. 2, kayakers and canoers are invited to launch on the Willapa River beginning at Robert Bush Park in downtown South Bend and paddle upriver picking up playing cards at several docks along the way. Its a short route on the benign Willapa River. Escort boats and launch help are provided. The best hand is declared the winner with prizes for the top four hands. Registration is $10 and all proceeds go to support local youth activities. This is not a race. Rod Run
OCEAN PARK The 30th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World is scheduled for Sept. 7 and Sept. 8 at Wilson Field at 25515 Sandridge Rd., in Ocean Park. The spectator gate opens at 8 a.m., with a variety of fun events scheduled throughout both days, including music, the show and shine, poker run and more. Candy Clark, who played Debbie Dunham in the 1973 film American Graffiti and More American Graffiti in 1979 will be on hand. She was also in The Informant, Zodiac, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and At Close Range plus many more. Some of the cars from the movie will join the hundreds of others appearing at Beach Barons Field, according to club president Dan Gove. There will be a cruise after the show and shine, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 7. In addition, look for the barrels around the field for non-perishable canned food donations. There will be cake to celebrate the 30th anniversary. The Boy Scouts will be at the show with the Pinewood Derby track and their cars. In addition the city of Long Beach is providing free trolley rides from 3rd and Oregon streets in Long Beach departing at 9:30 a.m., and every 30 to 45 minutes both days, with the last trip to the field at 3 p.m., and the last trip from Ocean Park at 4:30 p.m.
PUD public meetings
RAYMOND & LONG BEACH Public Utility District No. 2 of Pacific County will hold two open public question and answer sessions pertaining to the district. Sessions will be held on Sept. 9 at the Raymond PUD auditorium, located at 4th and Duryea Street and on Sept. 12 at the Long Beach PUD auditorium at 9610 Sandridge Road. Both sessions will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Commissioners Community Forum
BAY CENTER The board of Pacific County Commissioners is holding a community forum on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bay Center Community Center located at 5 Main Street, next to the Bay Center Post Office. The Commissioners will take questions and address important issues for Pacific County and the surrounding region. All are welcome to attend.
Singers wanted
ASTORIA The North Coast Chorale, providing choral music to the north coast community for over 20 years, is looking for singers of all voice ranges and all ages. They perform music from all genres, and you may also receive credit through Clatsop Community College. An exciting musical season is being planned. Singing with others creates harmony, and recent research reveals that when people sing in a choir, their heartbeats are synchronized so that the pulses of the choir members tend to increase and decrease in unison following the flow of the music. All in all, singing makes you feel good and its good for you! Seafood Preservation Workshops
ASTORIA Oregon State University Clatsop County Extension is hosting two workshops on food preservation. On Saturday, Sept. 14, a home seafood canning workshop will be held at the OSU Extension Office in Astoria from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $30 and each participant will take home their canned goods. Register by Aug. 30 as attendance is limited to the first 20 registrants. On Saturday, Oct. 12, OSU Extension will host a workshop on seafood smoking, pickling and brining. The 1930s
NASELLE The Appelo Archive Center in Naselle is presenting the film from the PBS series, The 1930s. On Sept. 14 they will show, Surviving the Dust Bowl, and on Sept. 28, The Civilian Conservation Corps. In conjunction with the Naselle Timberland Library the archive center is exhibiting Hope in Hard Times: Washington During the Great Depressions now through Oct. 5. LONG BEACH The president and members of the Long Beach Elks Lodge #1937 are participating in the Cape Disappointment Sprint Triathlon on Sept. 21. Out of the Box Art Show
TOKELAND On Sept. 21 is the date of the eighth annual Out of the Box Art Show and Wine Tasting, to be held at the Tradewinds on the Bay conference center in Tokeland. Proceeds from this popular event go to the Ocosta School art program. The art show begins around 2 p.m., with the wine tasting starting at 4 p.m. Local artists will be on hand to offer their unique items. Admission to the art show is free; or $12 at the door gives you a unique wine glass with the Out of the Box logo on one side and a picture drawn by Alyssa Phillips, an Ocosta art student, on the other. Coupons for three tastes and a full glass of wine are also included. Select from five different categories of wine. The event culminates with a live auction of donated items from our participating artists.
Harvest Fest
RAYMOND Grays Harbor Colleges Riverview Education Center in Raymond will be hosting a Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be arts and crafts vendors, food, informational booths, entertainment, and live music. In addition, there will be a variety of childrens activities and local gardeners are encouraged to bring their excess produce to sell or trade. There is no admission fee and parking is up close and plentiful. The festival will be held outside the Riverview Education Center at 600 Washington Avenue, Raymond.
