National Health Center Week

    KLIPSAN  Family Health Center is marking National Health Center Week with a back-to-school supply drive for area students through Aug. 17. By recognizing National Health Center Week, the Family Health Center aims to raise awareness about the important role community health centers play in providing a cost effective, patient centered medical home for low-income and other vulnerable populations. Community health centers have been in existence for more than 45 years and helped transform health care in their local communities. Bunco for Food4Kids

    LONG BEACH Bunco is held at Long Beach Elks on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. The next game is Aug. 15. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. Master Gardener clinic

    ILWACO Master Gardeners of Pacific County will lead a water-wise landscaping and gardening with native plants workshop at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The workshop and hands-on practice are on Saturday, Aug. 17. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hands-on practice on weed control methods is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Bring your own pair of durable garden gloves. Dress for the weather and bring your own nibbles. If you have plant questions or problems, come ask a master gardener. Clatsop Weavers & Spinners

    SKAMOKAWA The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guilds exhibit continues at Redmen Hall at 1394 W SR-4 in Skamokawa through Sept. 1. The theme of the exhibit is Its so nice to have a loom around the house will feature the practical side of weaving and spinning, showing hand spun and woven articles of use around the house. Rugs, towels, clothing, blankets, shawls, placemats and more will be displayed and most will be for sale. There will be weavers and spinners practicing their crafts during the weekends the exhibit is open and members of the Guild will be available for questions.     PACIFIC COUNTY  The day to submit sewing entries for the 2013 Pacific County Fair somehow didnt make it into the fair booklet. Entries will be accepted Sunday, Aug. 18, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to Sewing Building Superintendent Becky Coburn. Sewing items will be judged Monday, Aug. 19, allowing volunteers and student helpers to arrange the displays on Tuesday, just a day before the fair opens. 33rd Annual Kite Festival

    LONG BEACH The Washington State International Kite Festival (WSIKF) is a week-long kite celebration and competition set for Aug. 19 through Aug. 25. Starting on Monday and ending on Sunday this event boasts skies ablaze with color, high-flying action and choreographed movement. Washingtons Kite Festival draws famous kite fliers from all around the world, and thousands of awed spectators, many of whom participate in the fun with their own kite flying adventures. Themed days include Terrific Tuesday, Red White & Blue Day, Handcrafted Kite day; Mass ascensions, lighted flights and more.

Burn Ban

    PACIFIC COUNTY  A burn ban is now in effect for Pacific County and will remain in place through Sept. 30. The burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires in approved fire pits that are limited to 3-feet in diameter and 2-feet in height. Fires for debris disposal are not considered recreational and are not allowed under any circumstances. Please contact your local fire district for further information. Summer lunch program

    PENINSULA The Ocean Beach School District continues their summer feeding program in several locations Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Distribution is at the following locations: Ocean Park Elementary, Culbertson Park in Long Beach and at the Ilwaco City Park.  The program is open to any child, regardless of income status, up to the age of 18. Remember, due to regulations, the lunch must be eaten by the kids at the site (lunches cannot be taken with them nor can they be given to adult family members).

Kite museum auction

    LONG BEACH Every year the World Kite Museum hosts an auction during the week of the Washington State International Kite Festival. This years is on Aug. 24 at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. Social hour is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., dinner is at 8 p.m., and the live auction starts at 9 p.m. This is the primary fundraiser for the museum for the year and all proceeds go to grow and improve the nations only kite museum, with one of the worlds largest collections of kites and kite related ephemera. The theme for this years auction is Red, Kite, and Blue so dress in your patriotic best or dress as your favorite kite!  Prizes will be given for the best costume! Tickets are $25 each.

Waikiki Beach Concert

    CAPE D The next Waikiki beach concert is at 7 p.m., Aug. 24 at Cape Disappointment State Park. This concert will feature the talents of The Ben Rice Band. Ben Rice brings real vintage blues into the modern era by twisting soul, roots blues and west coast blues with rockabilly, funk and rock. Rice is a virtuosic guitar player whose soulful voice and inventive twists on blues are creating a buzz in the industry. Rices last all original CD Pour Me Some Whiskey is being praised as being among the best CD releases from the NorthwestPlaying along with some of the top musicians in the National Blues Scene. First picking up the guitar at five, he now has eighteen years of playing, numerous awards, nominations, and a music degree from the University of Oregon. Distribution of school supplies

    PACIFIC COUNTY  SNAP is a program established by Coastal Community Action Program to help low income children in Pacific County with back-to-school supplies. This year SNAP will send more than 600 children (K-12) to school with new paper, pencils, pens, crayons, glue, pencil boxes, markers, folders, etc. Distribution will be Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CCAP, 324 Jackson St., Raymond; Aug 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at CCAP, 152 First Ave. in Ilwaco; and on Aug. 27 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Peninsula Baptist Church 23802 Pacific Hwy., Ocean Park. Bluegrass concert

    RAYMOND  Bluegrass band Jeff Scroggins & Colorado will perform at the Raymond Theatre on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. If you like the combination of banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and bass along with good bluegrass music chances are youll like this five-member band featuring Jeff and his son, Tristan, who have won numerous contests and awards, including Jeff taking the top prize at the National Banjo Championship. Library book sale

    ILWACO The Friends of The Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held Aug. 30, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the atrium in the old Ilwaco High School next to the football field. Some books are marked all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and 50 cents for regular size paper. Fill your shopping bag with books on Sept. 1 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for just $3. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park Libraries.

Swap meet

Jessi Harman benefit

    LONG BEACH A variety of activities are set for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 to benefit the Harman family. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 31, come to the barrel races at the Peninsula Saddle Club, 6407 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. It is great entertainment for a bargain price. Then that evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., dont miss the surf and turf barbecue dinner and silent auction at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N Pacific Highway. Dinner has a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Finally on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., there is a cowgirl breakfast at the rodeo grounds followed by more barrel races from noon to 3 p.m. This is a chance for the community to support one of our own. Jessi is a special little girl who is working hard to get back to her spirited self again. Lets show her how proud we are of her hard work by making this a successful weekend.

Tattoo & Piercing Convention

    LONG BEACH A not-to-be-missed event is coming to the Long Beach Peninsula on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the Chautauqua Lodge in Long Beach. On Aug. 31, the show opens at noon with live bands playing all day, live tattoo booths, vendors, a beer garden, face painting and more. From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., there will be the Tattoo Contest and Miss One Nation Pinup Girl contest. At 10 p.m., the tattoo of the day will be announced. On Sept. 1 the show again opens at noon. There will be live bands, vendors, beer garden, etc. from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., is the tattoo contest; at 3 p.m., a bike show and finally at 10 p.m., the tattoo of the day will be announced. Buzzards Breath chili

    CATHLEMET The 10th annual Labor Day Buzzards Breath Chili Cook-off is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet. This is a great event and one for competitors and the public alike. In addition to the cook-off contest there will be a flat-bread throwing contest, yellow ducky race, beer garden, raffles, live music and more. The cost is $7 for public tasting. If you want to compete it is $15 for the Tolbert sanctioned championship competition Texas Red Chili. There is no fee for entering home-style chili, but call to confirm requirements. Slow drag time

    ILWACO Its almost time again for the Slow Drag at the Port of Ilwaco, set for Friday, Sept. 6 from 4 p.m. to dark. Come test your skills and luck at this fun event, or just come watch the fierce, fun competition.

Rod Run

    OCEAN PARK The 30th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World is scheduled for Sept. 7 and Sept. 8 at Wilson Field at 25515 Sandridge Rd., in Ocean Park. The spectator gate opens at 8 a.m., with a variety of fun events scheduled throughout both days, including music, the show and shine, poker run and more. Candy Clark, who played Debbie Dunham in the 1973 film American Graffiti and More American Graffiti in 1979. She was also in The Informant, Zodiac, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and At Close Range plus many more. Some of the cars from the movie will join the hundreds of others appearing at Beach Barons Field, according to club president Dan Gove.  There will be a cruise after the show and shine, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 7. In addition, look for the barrels around the field for non-perishable canned food donations. There will be cake to celebrate the 30th Anniversary. The Boy Scouts will be at the show with the Pinewood Derby track and their cars. Plus there will be plenty of vendors on the field Saturday and Sunday for your shopping and eating pleasure. Seafood Preservation Workshops

    ASTORIA  Oregon State University Clatsop County Extension is hosting two workshops on food preservation. On Saturday, Sept. 14, a home seafood canning workshop will be held at the OSU Extension Office in Astoria from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $30 and each participant will take home their canned goods.  Register by Aug. 30 as attendance is limited to the first 20 registrants. On Saturday, Oct. 12, OSU Extension will host a workshop on seafood smoking, pickling and brining. The cost is again $30 per participant, and limited to the first 20 registrants. The 1930s

    NASELLE The Appelo Archive Center in Naselle is presenting the film from the PBS series, The 1930s. On Sept. 14 they will show, Surviving the Dust Bowl, and on Sept. 28, The Civilian Conservation Corps. In conjunction with the Naselle Timberland Library the archive center is exhibiting Hope in Hard Times: Washington During the Great Depressions now through Oct. 5.     LONG BEACH The president and members of the Long Beach Elks Lodge #1937 are participating in the Cape Disappointment Sprint Triathlon on Sept. 21.
