Clay art show

ILWACO  The Peninsula Clay Artists are holding a show at The Artisan in Ilwaco from Aug. 7 to Aug. 17, with hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The opening reception on Aug. 7 will feature Rod Maxwell-Muir making pots on the wheel. Other artists will be on hand to share their work and Brian OConnor will bring his wonderful music. The workshops are many and varied and full of new ideas. They include mosaic house sign making, slump and drape mold, bowls and platters, community sculpture, paper kiln firing, printing on clay, wall sconces, Raku, hand-built nichos (personal shrines) and the mosaic series in which you will make a personal mosaic and help with a community mosaic. The very special Raku workshop on Saturday with Dave and Bonnie Deal is not to be missed. Jam sessions

Middle Village workshop

CHINOOK Doing history at Middle Village is the theme of the workshop set for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Aug. 8 at Fort Columbia State Park and Middle Village. This one-day workshop employs historic inquiry to enrich understanding of the Chinookan trade site, Middle Village, part of the Lewis and Clark National Park. Preference will be given to educators but others are welcome, space allowing. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The fee is $25 for materials and food. School supply donations needed

PACIFIC COUNTY Project Pack2School is seeking community participation and donations to raise funds in order to purchase school supplies for low-income children in the Ocean Beach School District 101. This project is an opportunity for the community to give every child the best chance to start the school year off with confidence and dignity. Please send monetary donations to Peninsula Baptist Church, P.O. Box 509, Ocean Park, WA 98640. Indicate on your check that the monies are for Project Pack2School. If you would rather donate backpacks and school supplies, please refer to the specific School Supply List provided by the Ocean Beach School District for each class available at www.ocean.k12.wa.us. Surf n Saddle Jr. Rodeo

LONG BEACH The Long Beach Junior Rodeo is set for Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 at the Peninsula Saddle Club grounds on Sandridge Road. This is a fun event that showcases the many talented young people. There will be bucking ponies, steer daubing, break-away roping, barrel racing, goat tying, dummy roping and lots more. The cowboy breakfast is available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and lunch will be served as well. Events start each day at 10 a.m., so come out and support local kids.

125 Years of Rail

ILWACO  The exhibit From the Water to the Woods: 125 Years of Rail is on view at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco through Sept. 1. It will explore the many ways railroads helped to develop this region. Call 642-3446 for more information. Everyone is welcome.

Square Dance & Game Night

RAYMOND  On Saturday, Aug. 10, the Willapa Valley Grange, at 290 Camp One Road in Raymond is hosting a night of square dancing and game playing fun for the whole family! Dancing, music and game playing begins at 7 p.m. and continues through 10 p.m. All dances will be taught. Bring your happy feet, tapping toes and favorite games. This is a live music, alcohol-free, all ages family event. All fun-seekers under age 18 must be supervised by an adult. Friends barbecue & more

ILWACO  Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge will hold their annual barbeque and silent auction on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Wildlife Refuge headquarters. There will be barbecued oysters, salmon, tuna and all the fixings plus live music, fun activities and time to explore nearby trails. Lunch begins at noon and is open to old and new members. Waikiki Beach Concert

CAPE D The next Waikiki beach concert is set for 7 p.m., Aug. 10 at Cape Disappointment State Park. Performing will be the band, Sugarcane. Over the last few years Sugarcane has evolved into one of the top Bluegrass Rock bands on the West Coast and is showing no signs of slowing down. The sound is a sweet mix of country, Caribbean, blues and bluegrass. The sky is the limit for Sugarcane. They are a fine group of gentlemen and a very solid band. Come, see and hear for yourself! Bring a lawn chair and other personal comforts and sit back and enjoy some great music at this free outdoor concert. A Discover Pass is required. For more information call 642-3029.

The 1930s

NASELLE The Appelo Archive Center in Naselle is presenting the film from the PBS series, The 1930s. On Aug. 10, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the segment to be featured is The Crash of 1929. On Sept. 14 they will show, Surviving the Dust Bowl, and on Sept. 28, The Civilian Conservation Corps. In conjunction with the Naselle Timberland Library the archive center is exhibiting Hope in Hard Times: Washington During the Great Depressions now through Oct. 5. This is a wonderful opportunity to look at how these tough times affected Washingtonians. Call 484-3877 for information.

Clatsop Weavers & Spinners

SKAMOKAWA The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guilds exhibit continues at Redmen Hall at 1394 W SR-4 in Skamokawa through Sept. 1. The theme of the exhibit is Its so nice to have a loom around the house will feature the practical side of weaving and spinning, showing hand spun and woven articles of use around the house. Rugs, towels, clothing, blankets, shawls, placemats and more will be displayed and most will be for sale. There will be weavers and spinners practicing their crafts during the weekends the exhibit is open and members of the Guild will be available for questions. ILWACO Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco is open every Saturday, rain or shine, all summer long from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down and shop for farm fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, plants, flowers and all manner of seafood, or just enjoy a stroll along the waterfront in Ilwaco.

Sunday, Aug. 11

Edible garden tour

PENINSULA The fourth annual edible garden tour is set for Sunday, Aug. 11 from noon to 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Long Beach Grange, all proceeds from the event benefit local food banks. Admission is just $7 or five cans of food. Youth under 16 years old are admitted free with an adult. Tickets and maps are available at Adelaides in Ocean Park, Jimella and Nancis Seafood Market in Klipsan, Planter Box Nursery in Long Beach, The English Garden Nursery in Seaview and at the gardens during the tour. Vespers services

OYSTERVILLE Vespers this week at the Oysterville Church beginning at 3 p.m., will be lead by Rev. Dean Mead, retired Presbyterian minister. Music will be provided by the Cate and Starla Gable, with Bonnie Masson playing the pump organ. Sydney Stevens will provide the Oysterville moment. All are welcome to this casual event.

Monday, Aug. 12

Mandarin Chinese classes

NASELLE The Naselle Mandarin Chinese immersion program for kindergarten and first grade students is ready to roll for next school year. About half of the children have opted-in for the program. If someone would still like to have their child in the program the deadline is Aug.12. The long-term goal is to have K-5 students in the dual immersion programs and students may take a competency test in the ninth grade. Students will converse in Mandarin Chinese in their morning classes. Call the school at 484-7121 for more information.

Burn Ban

PACIFIC COUNTY  A burn ban is in effect immediately for Pacific County will remain in place through Sept. 30. The burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires in approved fire pits that are limited to 3-feet in diameter and 2-feet in height. Fires for debris disposal are not considered recreational and are not allowed under any circumstances. Please contact your local fire district for further information. SOUTH BEND The Pacific County Commissioners are holding a community forum from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Aug. 13 in the Raymond council chambers at 230 2nd Street. Summer lunch program

PENINSULA The Ocean Beach School District continues their summer feeding program in several locations Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Distribution is at the following locations: Ocean Park Elementary, Culbertson Park in Long Beach and at the Ilwaco City Park. The program is open to any child, regardless of income status, up to the age of 18. Remember, due to regulations, the lunch must be eaten by the kids at the site (lunches cannot be taken with them nor can they be given to adult family members).

Bunco for Food4Kids

LONG BEACH Bunco is held at Long Beach Elks on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. The next game is Aug. 15. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. Master Gardener clinic

ILWACO Master Gardeners of Pacific County will lead a water-wise landscaping and gardening with native plants workshop at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The workshop and hands-on practice are on Saturday, Aug. 17. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hands-on practice on weed control methods is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your own pair of durable garden gloves. Dress for the weather and bring your own nibbles. If you have plant questions or problems, come ask a master gardener. The group will also be sponsoring a plant clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the museum. If possible, please bring samples of your plant problem. Distribution of school supplies

PACIFIC COUNTY  SNAP is a program established by Coastal Community Action Program to help low income children in Pacific County with back-to-school supplies. This year SNAP will send more than 600 children (K-12) to school with new paper, pencils, pens, crayons, glue, pencil boxes, markers, folders, etc. Distribution will be Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CCAP, 324 Jackson St., Raymond; Aug 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at CCAP, 152 First Ave. in Ilwaco; and on Aug. 27 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Peninsula Baptist Church 23802 Pacific Hwy., Ocean Park. Bluegrass concert

RAYMOND  Bluegrass band Jeff Scroggins & Colorado will perform at the Raymond Theatre on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. If you like the combination of banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and bass along with good bluegrass music chances are youll like this five-member band featuring Jeff and his son, Tristan, who have won numerous contests and awards, including Jeff taking the top prize at the National Banjo Championship. Jessi Harman benefit

LONG BEACH A variety of activities are set for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 to benefit the Harman family. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 31, come to the barrel races at the Peninsula Saddle Club, 6407 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. It is great entertainment for a bargain price. Then that evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., dont miss the surf and turf barbecue dinner and silent auction at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N Pacific Highway. Dinner has a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Finally on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., there is a cowgirl breakfast at the rodeo grounds followed by more barrel races from noon to 3 p.m. This is a chance for the community to support one of our own. Jessi is a special little girl who is working hard to get back to her spirited self again. Lets show her how proud we are of her hard work by making this a successful weekend.

Elks Sprints for K-9 Unit

LONG BEACH The president and members of the Long Beach Elks Lodge #1937 are participating in the Cape Disappointment Sprint Triathlon on Sept. 21.
