Burn Ban

PACIFIC COUNTY  A burn ban, in effect immediately for Pacific County, will remain in place through Sept. 30. The burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires in approved fire pits that are limited to 3-feet in diameter and 2-feet in height. Fires for debris disposal are not considered recreational and are not allowed under any circumstances. Please contact your local fire district for further information. Soccer time!

PENINSULA Sign-ups for youth soccer are now underway. Registration is open to all until Aug. 7. Youth in fourth grade and up are really encouraged to sign up to play. Make a pet head

NASELLE On July 31, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., children of all ages are welcome to come to Naselle Timberland Library to learn how to make a garden pet head out of repurposed nylons, garden soil, grass seeds and a few crafty embellishments. WSU Pacific County Extension 4-H staff will show you how. Your pet will gain personality as it grows. It only needs is a little time, sun and water. All supplies provided. Egg hunt & party

Minecraft party

OCEAN PARK From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., on July 31, teens are invited to Ocean Park Timberland Library to make minecraft-inspired wallets, keychains and paper crafts and learn about the minecraft library contest taking place all summer. School supply donations needed

PACIFIC COUNTY Project Pack2School is seeking community participation and donations to raise funds in order to purchase school supplies for low-income children in the Ocean Beach School District 101. This project is an opportunity for the community to give every child the best chance to start the school year off with confidence and dignity. Please send monetary donations to Peninsula Baptist Church, P.O. Box 509, Ocean Park, WA 98640. Indicate on your check that the monies are for Project Pack2School. If you would rather donate backpacks and school supplies, please refer to the specific School Supply List provided by the Ocean Beach School District for each class available at www.ocean.k12.wa.us. Bunco for Food4Kids

LONG BEACH Bunco returns to the Long Beach Elks on Aug. 1 and continues the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. This program provides a backpack with food for needy kids to take home on Fridays so they have something to eat on the weekend. If you have questions call 642-8244.

Willapa Festival

RAYMOND  The Willapa Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 2; from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 3 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, in downtown Raymond. This years event will include some new events such as a battle of the bands, street market, new vendors and a softball tournament in addition to the beer garden, kids entertainment, parade, car show, quilt show, sidewalk sales and free family swim. The committee is currently seeking local artisans and non-profit groups to fill vacant vendor space. Space is limited and free to local non-profits. Jakes birthday party

LONG BEACH  On Aug. 2 the seventh annual Jake the Alligator Mans 75th birthday party and car show will be held. All those 21 years old and over are welcome to attend Jakes Blue Hawaii themed bachelor party set for Aug. 2 at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. There will be an evening of burlesque and live music. Fleet Street Vittles will provide a scrumptious menu and there will be tons of great raffle prizes! Dress appropriately in Hawaiian print and Elvis gear because the audience members that take the Elvis theme to the extreme will be eligible for a special prize! The Wizard of Oz

CHINOOK  Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) will perform The Wizard of Oz at their theater at Fort Columbia State Park in Chinook. Directed by Barbara Poulshock, The Wizard of Oz will be performed on the weekends, closing on Sunday, Aug. 4. Friday and Saturdays performances will be at 7 p.m., and Sundays performance will be a 3 p.m., matinee. Tickets are priced at $17 for Adults, $5 for children and are available at Okies in Ocean Park, and Stormin Normans in Long Beach. Tickets can also be purchased on line at www.papatheatre.org.

Movie matinee

RAYMOND The Raymond Timberland Library is hosting a summer movie matinee from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 2 for children. The library will show a free movie with popcorn provided. Moviegoers may bring a drink. For more information call 942-2408.

125 Years of Rail

ILWACO  The exhibit From the Water to the Woods: 125 Years of Rail is on view at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco through Sept. 1. It will explore the many ways railroads helped to develop this region. Call 642-3446 for more information. Everyone is welcome.

Race against violence

LONG BEACH As part of the Domestic Violence Awareness Project, the Race Against Violence is set for Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at 10 a.m. in Long Beach. With the theme, Providing oceans of hope for the future, this is a wonderful event to honor the memory of Lisa Bonney, whose life was taken in an act of domestic violence. But it also strives to raise awareness, educate young adults and stop the cycle of domestic violence, and provide support and resources to victims and survivors of domestic violence. Registration is $27 with a shirt and $17 without. You can register online at www.dvawareness.org/race, or in person on Friday, Aug. 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. or from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on race day, Aug. 3, at the Long Beach Train Depot at 3rd and Pacific in Long Beach.

Cake parade & more

LONG BEACH  All ages are welcome on Saturday, Aug. 3 for the celebration of Jakes birthday. There will be a police escorted cake parade through downtown Long Beach starting at 1 p.m., and music on the stage to kick things off. The car show, bounce house, tremendously popular Bride of Jake Pinup Contest and live music will be at Veterans Field in the heart of Long Beach starting at noon and running 7 p.m. All of Saturdays events are free! Clatsop Weavers & Spinners

SKAMOKAWA The Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guilds exhibit continues at Redmen Hall at 1394 W SR-4 in Skamokawa through Sept. 1. The theme of the exhibit is Its so nice to have a loom around the house will feature the practical side of weaving and spinning, showing hand spun and woven articles of use around the house. Rugs, towels, clothing, blankets, shawls, placemats and more will be displayed and most will be for sale. There will be weavers and spinners practicing their crafts during the weekends the exhibit is open and members of the Guild will be available for questions. Playhouse painting day

ILWACO The Peninsula Players will paint the outside of the Playhouse beginning at 10 a.m. on Aug. 3. If you are able and interested in helping with this project call Rob Lindberg at 665-0590. If you have some old containers to put paint in and brushes, bring those with you also.

ILWACO Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco is open every Saturday, rain or shine, all summer long from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down and shop for farm fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, plants, flowers and all manner of seafood, or just enjoy a stroll along the waterfront in Ilwaco.

Hunter Education Class

LONG BEACH Long Beach Police Department will host its annual hunter education course from Aug. 12 through Aug. 17. Students must register before the class to attend. To register go to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website and register under hunter education at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/huntered/. There is no charge for this class.

Summer lunch program

PENINSULA The Ocean Beach School District continues their summer feeding program in several locations Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Distribution is at the following locations: Ocean Park Elementary, Culbertson Park in Long Beach and at the Ilwaco City Park. The program is open to any child, regardless of income status, up to the age of 18. Remember, due to regulations, the lunch must be eaten by the kids at the site (lunches cannot be taken with them nor can they be given to adult family members).

Wednesday, Aug. 7

Clay art show

ILWACO  The Peninsula Clay Artists are holding a show is at The Artisan in Ilwaco from Aug. 7 to Aug. 17, with hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The opening reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Aug. 7 will feature Rod Maxwell-Muir making pots on the wheel. Other artists will be on hand to share their work and Brian OConnor will bring his wonderful music. Workshops are many and varied and full of new ideas. They include mosaic, house sign making, slump and drape mold, bowls and platters, community sculpture, paper kiln firing, printing on clay, wall sconces, Raku, handbuilt nichos (personal shrines) and the mosaic series in which you will make a personal mosaic and help with a community mosaic. The very special Raku workshop on Saturday with Dave and Bonnie Deal is not to be missed. Surf n Saddle Jr. Rodeo

LONG BEACH Long Beach Junior Rodeo is set for Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 at the Peninsula Saddle Grounds on Sandridge Road. This is a fun event that showcases the many talented young people. There will be bucking ponies, steer daubing, break-away roping, barrel racing, goat tying, dummy roping and lots more. The cowboy breakfast is available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and lunch will be served as well.

ILWACO  Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge will hold their annual barbeque and silent auction on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Wildlife Refuge headquarters. There will be barbecued oysters, salmon, tuna and all the fixings plus live music, fun activities and time to explore nearby trails. Lunch begins at noon and is open to old and new members. Waikiki Beach Concert

CAPE D The next Waikiki beach concert is set for 7 p.m., Aug. 10 at Cape Disappointment State Park. Performing will be the band, Sugarcane. Over the last few years Sugarcane has evolved into one of the top bluegrass-rock bands on the West Coast and is showing no signs of slowing down. The sound is a sweet mix of country, Caribbean, blues and bluegrass. The sky is the limit for Sugarcane. They are a fine group of gentlemen and a very solid band. Come see and hear for yourself!
