Summer lunch program
PENINSULA The Ocean Beach School District if offering a summer feeding program in several locations Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., at the following locations: Ocean Park Elementary, Culbertson Park in Long Beach and at the Ilwaco City Park. The program is open to any child, regardless of income status, up to the age of 18. Remember, due to regulations, the lunch must be eaten by the kids at the site (lunches cannot be taken with them nor can they be given to adult family members).

Suicide Prevention
ILWACO Everyone Plays a Role in Suicide Prevention is the title of a national event being hosted by the U.S. Surgeon General and other leaders in Chicago on June 27. The two-hour main session will be presented here in a free afternoon webcast from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the Hilltop School Auditorium in Ilwaco. Hosted locally by Willapa Behavioral Health, NAMI Pacific County, and WellSpring Community Network, the hope is that this event will focus attention on building multiple strategies to increase understanding and decrease the instance of suicides in our communities.
Understanding Medicare
SEAVIEW Whether you are a current Medicare beneficiary, new or will soon be eligible, this free welcome to Medicare class set for June 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., is for you. The class will be held at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. Tall ships in port
ILWACO The Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain are docking at the Port of Ilwaco from June 27 through June 30. Come aboard and take a self-guided tour. Crews from both ships will be on hand in period customers to answer questions and tell stories. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.

Doggie Olympics
LONG BEACH Canine owners and dog-lovers are invited to join the Doggie Olympic Games on June 28 and June 29 at the Bolstad beach approach in Long Beach. Events include the Babe Ruth Obedience Baseball to Whos Your Daddy? There will be an opening ceremony with the lighting of the Olympic flame. Emergency Response Team Training
SOUTH BEND The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) is offering a three-day Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. The course is scheduled for Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30. The training will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Pacific County Administration Facility at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants should bring their lunch each day. Complete attendance is required to graduate from the course. Course units are a combination of hands-on tutorial, presentation with lecture, and group activities with discussion. All course materials will be provided. Accommodations will gladly be made for participants with special needs. Participants under the age of 18 will need parent/guardian permission to attend. A Barrel Full of Pennies
RAYMOND The Willapa Players latest production, A Barrel Full of Pennies, opens this weekend. This hilarious romp, written by John Patrick and directed by Rebekah Cowell, promises a laugh a minute. This production starts at 7:30 p.m., at the Hannan Playhouse on Eighth Street in Raymond on Saturday, June 29; with a matinee on Sunday, June 30. Tickets are $10 for general public and $8 for seniors (65 and older) and students (through college) and are available at South Bend Pharmacy, Everyones Video and More, and at the door.
125 Years of Rail
ILWACO The exhibit From the Water to the Woods: 125 Years of Rail is on view at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. On July 19, 1888, the Ilwaco Railway & Navigation Company held a grand celebration commemorating the completion of its line from Ilwaco to Long Beach. To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Clamshell Railroad the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum has organized this exhibit. The exhibition will be on view until Sept. 1. Legendary Locals
ILWACO On Saturday June 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco, will host a special reception and book-signing event to honor the subjects of Sydney Stevens latest book Legendary Locals of the Long Beach Peninsula. At 2:30 p.m. Stevens will speak about her research and creating the book with Arcadia Press. Her remarks will be followed by a special performance of The Lady Cecilia by Mary Garvey accompanied by Cate Gable. Fisher poet Geno Leech will also perform several of his poems about the area. Books will be available for purchase or bring your own copy for the signing party. Many of the legendary locals highlighted in the book will be on hand to chat and sign books along with Stevens. Head Start preschool
LONG BEACH Head Start preschool is now enrolling for the 2013-14 school year. Beginning Sept. 19, classes will be held for four days a week, for three and a half hours a day. American Legion Auxiliary poppies
PENINSULA Members of the Don R. Grable Unit No. 48 of the American Legion Auxiliary are offering memorial poppies on the Peninsula through July 4. Donations are welcome, and all money collected will be used to help veterans and their families. Watch for American Legion and Auxiliary members, please be generous with your donation and wear a poppy with pride, especially on the Fourth of July weekend.

Future Events
4th of July Parade
OCEAN PARK The old-fashioned Fourth of July grand parade starts at 1 p.m., at U Street and Bay Avenue, and continues throughout the downtown area. Parade entries usually include family- and club-made floats, school bands and other marching units. Entries may be elaborate or simple, large or small, clamorous or subdued, but music and marching is encouraged. Being a part of the Grand Parade is a great way for family and friends to celebrate the Fourth of July together! Kids who want to participate in the parade can decorate their bikes for free at the Bank of the Pacific (located about mid-way through the parade route) and enter the procession from there.
Fireworks!
LONG BEACH Enjoy fireworks on the beach starting at dusk (around 9:30 p.m.) on July 4. The main event is one of the best fireworks shows around, set off in front of the Long Beach boardwalk. Hours of spectacular pre- and post-show fireworks can be seen up and down the 28 miles of beach. This is one of those has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed events.
Art in the Park
OCEAN PARK The 4th Annual Art in the Park will be held on Thursday, July 4, at Sheldon Park in Ocean Park from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Come join us to enjoy the talents of local crafters before and also after the parade. Wrestling camp
ILWACO The Ilwaco dual-meet team camp is fast approaching and from July 5 to July 7 and wrestling coach Kevin McNulty and the wrestlers need help in feeding the 18 teams expected to participate at Carl Aase Gymnasium at the Black Lake campus. There will be an organizational meeting Wednesday, June 26 at 7:15 p.m., at Hilltop Cafeteria to help plan the meals for the wrestlers. All parents of wrestlers, relatives, fans and community members are encouraged to come and be a part of helping feed the wrestlers who will come to the Peninsula. The team camp is a great fundraiser for the wrestlers and helps each of them to attend the state Mat Classic each year whether they compete or not.
Beach cleanup
PENINSULA On July 5 head to any of the major beach approaches at 9:30 a.m., and connect with a cleanup coordinator for supplies to get the firework debris off the beach. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand in cleaning up the beach.
Fireworks at the Port
ILWACO Feel the Thunder at the Port of Ilwaco starting at dusk, around 9:30 p.m., on July 6. The Ilwaco Merchants Association invites the public to join in the free, safe, community-based family event. This is a great show for everyone. Bring chairs or a blanket and enjoy the view.
Starving Artist Sale
OCEAN PARK Peninsula Arts Association Starving Artist Sale is set for July 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ocean Park library at 1308 256th Place. You are sure to find the best art and art related bargains in town! PAA artists clear their studios of unwanted supplies, books, frames, bits and pieces of just about anything art related and also put up some of their older work for sale at enormously discounted prices. In fact, nothing can be priced at over $50 and most everything is much, much less. A portion of all sales is deposited directly into PAAs High School Graduate Scholarship Fund. One-Act Plays
ILWACO Peninsula Players are offering some summer fun three one-act plays are set to be performed Aug. 23, Aug. 24, Aug. 25, Aut. 30, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Actors and volunteers are needed. Chronic Conditions
ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging (O3A) has scheduled a free workshop open to the public: Living Well With Chronic Conditions, to be held one day a week, Thursdays, (2.5 hours) for six consecutive weeks, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. beginning Thursday July 11 and continuing July 18, 25, Aug. 1, 8 and 15 at the Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room, 174 1st Avenue N. in Ilwaco. Two specifically trained leaders will facilitate the workshop. All of the materials individuals will be using were developed by Stanford Universitys Chronic Disease-Self Management Program. This program is designed to help anyone who suffers from a chronic condition, including diabetes, asthma, heart disease, chronic pain, arthritis, and hypertension just to name a few; to lessen their stress and frustration, manage symptoms, and deal with fatigue. The goal of the program is to help you live a healthy life with your chronic conditions by managing your symptoms. Those who are caring for someone with a chronic condition are also encouraged to attend. Each participant will have access to a Living Well With Chronic Conditions book. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Wildwood Rally
ROSBURG The Pacific County Chapter of the ABATE club is holding the fifth annual Wildwood Rally from July 12 through July 14 at the Deep River Campground at 9 Wainamo Road in Rosburg. The Wizard of Oz
CHINOOK Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) will perform The Wizard of Oz at their theater at Fort Columbia State Park in Chinook. Directed by Barbara Poulshock, The Wizard of Oz will be performed on the weekends opening on Friday, July 12 and closing on Sunday, Aug. 4. Friday and Saturdays performances will be at 7 p.m., and Sundays performance will be a 3 p.m. matinee. Tickets are priced at $17 for Adults, $5 for children and are available at Okies in Ocean Park, and Stormin Normans in Long Beach. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.papatheatre.org.

Peninsula Garden Tour
PENINSULA The seventh annual Garden Tour on the Long Beach Peninsula, titled Music in the Gardens, will be held on Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will feature eight gardens with a wonderful variety of live music and delectable food and beverages that will encourage you to linger, experience and enjoy the Peninsulas beautiful outdoor rooms. And in addition, attendees will get to meet the gardeners who have mastered the art of successful gardening on the coast. The garden tour is a fundraiser for the Water Music Festival, which supports music programs in the Ocean Beach School District. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased one week before the tour at three venues: The English Nursery at the corner of Highways 101 and 103 in Seaview; Peninsula Landscape Supply at 15289 Sandridge Rd in Long Beach; and at Adelaides Books & Coffee at 1401 Bay Avenue in Ocean Park. IHS Class of 93 Grads!
LONG BEACH The class of 1993 will celebrate their 20-year reunion on July 20 and July 21. Festivities will begin with a dinner Saturday evening, July 20, at 7:30 p.m. at The Lost Roo in Long Beach (adults only please, and payment by individual tabs). A family beach picnic will be held the next day, Sunday, July 21 at 11 a.m. at the north end of the boardwalk just off the Bolstad beach approach. Hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks will be provided bring your own blanket, beach toys, and a food item to share. Cost of reunion attendance is $20 per alumni to offset picnic costs.
