Relay for Life start up

PENINSULA  Anyone interested in joining a committee to help with this years Relay for Life is welcome to attend the meeting May 22 at 6 p.m. at the Ocean Park office of Lighthouse Realty at 25810 Vernon Avenue. The kickoff for the Peninsula Relay for Life is at 9 a.m. on June 1 at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place. Please come for a free breakfast, register yourself and your teams, meet some incredible cancer survivors, be a part of the online video and learn more about this years event, Carnival for the Cure set for Sept. 21 and Sept. 22 at the Ilwaco High School track. Blood Drive

ILWACO  There will be a blood drive from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 at the Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. The goal is 30 donors. Help this good cause and sign up to donate blood. Please call Marci for information or to register at 642-6382.

Container gardening

PACIFIC COUNTY  Spring is just around the corner so its time to plan what you are going to plant, get ready for any large gardening projects youd like to do this year, or just visit with other gardeners. Washington State Universitys Pacific County Master Gardeners have scheduled the following events for avid gardeners or for those who are just beginning. A session entitled, Growing Vegetables in Containers will be offered at the following times and locations: May 23 at 3:30 p.m., at Shoalwater Bay Library and on May 28 at 6 p.m., at Raymond Timberland Library.

PACIFIC COUNTY  The worlds longest garage sale will be held over Memorial Day weekend, from May 24 through May 27 throughout Pacific County. Come find a great deal on must-have items.

Library book sale

OCEAN PARK  The Friends of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park libraries are holding a book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, May 24, Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. Some books are marked specially, all others are $1 for hardbound and trade papers. Proceeds benefit library programs. Stock up with great reading material.

Garage Sale

LONG BEACH  On May 24, May 25 and May 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., come to the huge multi-family garage sale at the Long Beach Grange, located at 5715 Sandridge Road. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be sold outside, and fresh homemade doughnuts will be sold inside. There will be lots of great stuff and lots of great fun. WASHINGTON Washington State Parks is honoring the 100th birthday of the park system by allowing free days with no Discover Pass required. They include June 1 (National Trails Day); June 8 and June 9 (National Get Outdoors Day); Aug. 4; Sept. 28 and Nov. 9 through Nov. 11.

OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park Food Bank is holding their annual bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 25 at 1600 Bay Avenue. Come support this great cause and get some delicious treats as well.

Tommy and the Wildcat

NASELLE The Finnish movie for May at the Appelo Archives Center (AAC), Tommy and the Wildcat (Poika ja Ilves), will be shown on May 25 at 11 a.m. The AAC is located at 1056 SR 4, two miles east of the schools. Directed by Raimo O. Niemi, the film was completed in 1998. It is about a 12-year-old boy who moves to a small village in Lapland, which was where his mother was raised. She had worked to protect the local lynx, but she had recently died. Tommys father is involved in a project to release a captive lynx into the wild. When his project fails, Tommy takes over and regains the trust and respect of his family and the village. The film runs 101 minutes and is appropriate for youth. This version is dubbed in English. Bridgetown in concert

SEAVIEW A breath-taking a cappella concert by an extraordinary group call Bridgetown will be offered at the Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview on Sunday, May 26. There is a potluck dinner at 6 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m. This acclaimed vocal ensemble is on tour from Warner Pacific College in Portland. There is free admission, however a freewill offering will be accepted to cover expenses.

Benefit auction

SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall is holding a sale of art from the estate of Janet Cimino, a well-known local collector. The sale is being held as a benefit for Tsuga Gallery, a gallery located in Cathlamet. The sale will run until June 1. Ciminos collection is primarily from the Pacific Northwest, but also includes many pieces from England and Japan. There is framed calligraphy by the English artist M. Adams; the Japanese collection includes antique silk embroidery, sumiyuri prints from the early 1700s, watercolors from the middle 1800s, and other beautiful pieces. There are also certified Duck Stamp paintings and other wildlife prints, and many works by nationally recognized regional artists, and much more. Redmen Hall is located at 1394 SR-4, Skamokawa. All items are priced to sell and include a wide variety of items for every taste. Redmen Hall is open Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge but donations are greatly appreciated.

CHINOOK Every Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be open gym time at the Chinook gymnasium. The public is welcome. Call 244-1359 if you have questions.

Holiday closures

PACIFIC COUNTY City, county and state offices will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday as are banks and credit unions. The Chinook Observer will be closed also and will reopen on Tuesday, May 28 at 8 a.m.

Memorial Day events

PACIFIC COUNTY  On Monday, May 27, the Peninsula will pause to remember those men and women who answered our nations call and never returned, as well as those who suffered because of injuries received during military service and those who are serving today. We pay solemn tribute to those whose sacrifices allow us to sleep under the blanket of freedom. As we come together, we will celebrate the lives and sacrifice of Americas fallen or injured heroes, and those who are serving today. Sponsored by the Don R. Grable American Legion Post #48 and its Auxiliary, the Elks Lodge (B.P.O.E.1937) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Day observances will begin at the Surfside Veterans Park (306th PL & I Street) at 8:30 a.m., then continue at the Oysterville Cemetery at 9 a.m., the Ocean Park Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., (coffee served), and the Lone Fir Cemetery at 10:15 a.m. The main cemetery program will be at the Ilwaco Cemetery at 11 a.m., followed by an observance at the Black Lake Memorial. Following the Black Lake observance, all are invited to the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum for a program and lunch provided by the American Legion and its Auxiliary and the Elks. Post-Walk Brainstorming Session

SEAVIEW  Friends and members of NAMI Pacific County and the WellSpring Mental Health Team will meet at 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 28, at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview to debrief the recent mental health walk held on May 18. In addition attendees will thank the dozens of contributors to the walk and raffle, and planning future programs, support sessions and community outreach. Anyone is welcome to attend. Play auditions

ILWACO  The Peninsula Players will be holding auditions for their upcoming play, All I Really Needed To Know I Learned In Kindergarten, on Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m., at The River City Playhouse located at 127 Lake in Ilwaco. Future Events

Summer expo

RAYMOND The Grays Harbor College Riverview Education Center, at 600 Washington Avenue in Raymond, will host its second annual Summer Expo on Thursday, May 30, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a plant sale, food, live music, arts and crafts, demonstrations and various informational booths. The plant show will feature one-gallon pots of tomatoes and strawberries, in addition to a vast variety of bedding plants. Other activities will include a bicycle rodeo for children, a free child safety seat inspection conducted by the Target Zero Task Force, and more. Admission is free and parking is plentiful. Bob Milne concert

LONG BEACH World famous ragtime and boogie-woogie piano player Bob Milne is returning to the World Kite Museum on May 31 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. You wont want to miss this outstanding musician. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, with seating on a first come, first served basis. Doors open at 6 p.m. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the World Kite Museum. Refreshments will be made available for a donation. Tickets are available by calling 642-4020, or online at the museum website.

Shoalwater Library sale

TOKELAND  Shoalwater Bay Tribal Community Library is having an all-day book sale Friday, May 31. There are lots of books donated for the sale, and the library offers computer use, DVDs, CDs and books on tape for those who travel to and from work. Plus they have comfy chairs to read in, an ear to listen and many interesting books, not to mention their Native American collection. They also offer adult, juvenile, young adult, childrens, fiction and nonfiction books. Their hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed on the weekends. They do have an outside drop box for your convenience, or you may drop off at any Timberland Regional Library. Call 360-267-8190 if you have questions.

Relay for Life Kick-Off

SEAVIEW  From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., on June 1, come to the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place for the Relay for Life 2013 kick-off event. There will be a free pancake breakfast, and you can get registered as a survivor, volunteer, sponsor and team. Plus you will learn about Relay for Life, why the Relay, where the money goes and more, and there will be tools and materials available to help your team raise money. Baccalaureate services

OCEAN PARK An ecumenical baccalaureate service for the graduating class of 2013 of Ilwaco High School will be held at the Peninsula Baptist Church in Ocean Park at 7 p.m., Sunday, June 2. Family members and friends are also invited to attend. A reception will follow.

Circus in town

LONG BEACH The circus is coming to town. There will be two performances on Sunday, June 2, one at 2 p.m. and one at 4 p.m. Watch for more details about getting your ticket early. This event is sponsored by the Long Beach Lions Club.

Understanding Medicare

OCEAN PARK  Need help understanding Medicare? Then come to the Ocean Park Timberland Library from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 7. Whether you are a current recipient or will be eligible soon, come to this free class to learn more. North Head L/H celebration

CAPE D  On Saturday, June 8, all are invited to Cape Disappointment State Park to help celebrate the 115th birthday of the North Head Lighthouse, the 100th anniversary of Washington State Parks, and the transfer of the title to the lighthouse from the Coast Guard to Washington State Parks. The celebration, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature food and refreshments, speeches by dignitaries and a ribbon-cutting at the lighthouse at noon, activities for children, self-guided tours of a Lighthouse Keepers Residence, the North Head gift store, a small museum with a specially designed history exhibit about the lighthouse, and tours of the lighthouse. Cost of the lighthouse tours is $2.50 for adults, and children from ages 7 to 17 are free (children must be at least 7 to go up in the lighthouse tower). June 8 is a Parks no-fee entrance day. As parking is somewhat limited, a van will take visitors to the lighthouse parking lot from the Cape Disappointment campground store parking lot. For more information, please call 642-3029.

Golf tournament

SURFSIDE Surfside is hosting a Bucket Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 8, at the Surfside Golf Course at 31508 J Place in Ocean Park. The entry fee is $50 per player, and includes an 18-hole green fee, lunch, prizes and a hat for each entrant. Players can sign up as a team or as an individual and be placed with a group. Four person scramble with registration at 9 a.m., shot gun start at 10 a.m. Rental carts are available but you need to call 665-4148 to reserve yours. Net proceeds will go to the 2013 Surfside Scholarship Fund to benefit a graduating Ilwaco High School senior. Waikiki Beach concert

ILWACO At 7 p.m., on June 8, the public is invited to Cape Disappointment State Parks Waikiki Beach for a concert. Performers will be Polecat, a band formed in Bellingham. Polecat has quickly established itself throughout the West, with three records and over 300 shows in three years. Their unique instrumentation is comprised of Karl Olson (drums), Jeremy Elliott (electric guitar and vocals), Aaron Guest (vocals and 12-string guitar), Cayley Schmid (fiddle), and Richard Reeves (upright bass). This enables them to seamlessly blend genres including bluegrass, country, celtic, rock, and world music into their sound. Their music celebrates life, love, and good times, and it reflects on the faces of the players and their audience. Hawaiian Luau Buffet

KLIPSAN  On June 14, at 5 p.m., there will be a Hawaiian luau buffet meal served at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. It will include Kahlua pork, teriyaki chicken, assorted salads and desserts. Golf Tournament & dinner

LONG BEACH On June 15, there will be a golf tournament and seafood dinner, sponsored by the Long Beach Elks to benefit the Backpacks for Kids program at Peninsula Golf Course. The shotgun start is at noon. There will be a four-person scramble. The cost is $40 per person and includes 18 holes of golf and dinner at the Elks. There will be prizes and karaoke that evening. NW Garlic Festival

OCEAN PARK  The 32nd Annual Northwest Garlic Festival runs June 15 and June 16 in Ocean Park. Located at Wilson Field, just two blocks south of Bay Avenue on Sandridge Road, the venue has three sides bordered by evergreen trees with the fourth side providing glimpses of Willapa Bay. Vendors and artisans may register for a booth through the OPACCs website, www.opwa.com, the festivals website http://garlic.aisol.com or by stopping in at the Chamber office Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1715 Bay Avenue in Ocean Park. A 10×10 site costs $100 for the two-day, outdoor event. Sites with electricity run $125. There are discounts for multiple spaces and the deadline to register and pay is May 23, or until all spaces are filled. In order to participate in the annual festival, vendors and artisans are required to sell items inspired by garlic and are urged to keep the festival motto in mind Its Chic to Reek. Because the festival limits the number of booths carrying similar merchandise, it is best to register early to guarantee a spot. Free Golf Clinic

LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks and Peninsula Golf Course are holding a free Golf Clinic for junior high school students on June 19 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Peninsula Golf Course. Golf clubs will be provided and 20 spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can be made at the Long Beach Elks by calling 642-2651.
