Spotlight on Poetry

ILWACO – Authors gather on April 27 at Olde Towne Trading Post on Lake Street in Ilwaco to share works in progress or published writings. Everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. In celebration of National Poetry Month, readers at this month’s event will be bringing their original poems to share. Coffee and goodies will be available for purchase beginning at 6 p.m. with a sign-up sheet provided for those who wish to read. Line dancing

LONG BEACH – Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Through the summer, dancing for beginners and intermediates is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and advanced dancers hit the floor from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Rummage sale

SEAVIEW – It’s time for the annual St. Mary Alter Society’s annual rummage sale and more! Firewise Home Assessment

SURFSIDE – On April 29, staff from Pacific County Fire District No. 1 and the Department of Natural Resources will be conducting Firewise Home Assessments in Surfside Estates between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., to help homeowners learn how to make homes safer from wildfire. There will also be a short video called “Home Improvement: A Firewise Approach.” Don’t miss out on this opportunity for tips and ideas to help protect your home from wildfire. Then Saturday, April 30 is the day set aside to help make Surfside Firewise. There will be a chipper on site, and staff to help unload yard debris. School Online Auction

OCEAN PARK – The Friends of Ocean Park School (FOOPS) are hosting their second annual online auction to raise money for their school through May 1. Everyone is invited to access the website and join in on the bidding. The auction can be accessed at www.benefitevents.com. The auction will feature a wide variety of items to include gift certificates to local restaurants and hair salons, seafood, day passes to amusement parks, computer services, hotel and bed and breakfast accommodations, music lessons, art classes, paintings from local artists and baked goods, just to name a few. FOOPS hopes to raise money to help fund school fieldtrips, recess equipment and assemblies at Ocean Park School. Bayside Singers perform

OCEAN PARK – The Bayside Singers, a Peninsula group in its third year, invites everyone to their Spring Sing, at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 30, at Ocean Park Lutheran Church, located at 240th and “U” streets. Guest soloist Michael Campellone will be featured with accompanist Barbara Poulshock in a program of varied music. Kid’s parade, blessings & more

PENINSULA -Saturday, April 30, the Loyalty Day festivities kick off with the 52-foot Coast Guard lifeboat display at the Ilwaco boat basin from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also at the port will be the blessing of the fleet memorial service, with free scenic boat rides leaving the dock at 1 p.m. The kid’s parade will get into formation at 11:30 a.m., with the parade beginning near Bank of Pacific at noon in Ilwaco. Same-day parade entry sign up is available and encouraged. The kid’s parade will go to the main intersection and take a right heading towards Howerton Way and the pavilion at the Port of Ilwaco. An oyster feed will take place at the Long Beach Elks from noon to 5 p.m. President James Munroe (portrayed by Dennis Bigalow) will be the guest speaker at the Honor’s Banquet, also at the Elks Lodge, at 7 p.m. The banquet includes a social hour, buffet dinner, awards, silent auction and drawings.

Rust Removal by Electrolysis

MENLO – On Saturday, April 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Larry (Dutch) Holland from Menlo Farm Learning Center at 1036 State Route 6, a volunteer non-profit education facility, will explain and demonstrate, step by step, the process of removing rust from iron and steel tools, utensils, etc., using the process of electrolysis. Holland will get into the chemistry of the process, so attendees understand what is going on, as well as what equipment is necessary and why. Also discussed will be the relevant safety issues. Salad lunch & more

NASELLE – April 30 marks the date for the 35th annual Spring Salad Luncheon held by the Priscilla Circle of the Naselle Lutheran Church located at 308 Knappton Road. “Farm Fresh,” this year’s theme will be used throughout the event. A garden area will feature more than 500 of Alfred Simukka’s tomato plants and other starts to add to your spring planting. The Lutheran bakers will provide an assortment of tempting products including traditional Finnish delights as well as a signature chocolate bar created by our own Kathy Hamilton. Quilts constructed by members will be on sale in both the sanctuary and the Craft Room. A donation of $6 will satisfy your appetite as you indulge in a variety of salads at the luncheon. With the exception of the garden area, which will open promptly at 10 a.m., the event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monies generated from this event will be used to continue on with mission work both abroad and here at home.

English Tea

CATHLEMET -St. James Family Center is Cathlamet is celebrating the coming of spring with a traditional English tea from noon to 3 p.m., on April 30. Tables will be laid with fine china, linen, silver and flowers as well as scones and jam and good tea. The cost is $12 and reservations are encouraged. Call 795-8612 to secure your space. Additionally there will be a spring plant sale at the same time and raffles of five themed baskets. Get garden starts, along with a variety of decorative plants and flowers. Student art show

ILWACO – Students in the Ilwaco High School art department’s annual art show continues through April 30 in the main gallery at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. This exhibit will show a range of work, from beginning work up through advanced. This is a non-juried show. Viewers of the show will have the opportunity to vote for the “People’s Choice” award in two categories – two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork. Museum hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. They are closed on Mondays. Please stop by and support IHS art!

50s Cruise Car Show

WARRENTON – The Lower Columbia Classics Car Club is holding their annual 50s Cruise Reunion Car Show on Saturday, April 30 at Camp Rilea on the west side of Highway 101, south of Warrenton. Loyalty Days W/E

LONG BEACH – On Sunday, start your morning with the Cowboy Breakfast at the Peninsula Saddle Grounds from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Then take the kids over to the Ilwaco Fire Hall for free fire truck rides from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., Loyalty Day floats will line up to be judged; the parade formation will start at noon at North 7th Street in Long Beach. Also at noon, a Loyalty Day program will be held at the reviewing stand in downtown Long Beach. The program includes Master of Ceremonies Jim Sayce, the reviewing officer from Coast Guard Cape Disappointment, and a performance of “Star Spangled Banner” by Cryslin Butters. Following the U.S. Coast Guard fly over at 1 p.m., the parade’s route will be participants down Pacific Avenue from 10th Street North to 10th Street South (Sid Snyder Drive). Parade trophies will be awarded between the police station and Funland (near 3rd South and Pacific Avenue) at around 3:30 p.m.

The Gift of Music

RAYMOND – The Willapa Harbor Chorale will step into spring celebrating The Gift of Music’ during their annual spring concert Sunday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at the historic Raymond Theater. Thirty-one singers will join together in singing a variety of numbers. The program features a tribute to the music of Irving Berlin, show tunes, and a wide variety of songs that will warm your heart. Rick Gauger with Beth Ginther as accompanist directs the choir. Additional support is given by flutist Connie Bevington and guitarist Alan Bevington. Meditation session

PC Democrats Scholarships

PACIFIC COUNTY – Applications for the Pacific County Democrats scholarships must be postmarked no later than May 1 and need to be mailed to PCD, P.O. Box 455, South Bend, WA 98586. Up to two $500 scholarships will awarded to high school or home-schooled graduates from the county. Applicants will be evaluated on four weighted qualifications: Academic achievement (types of classes as well as overall grade point average); political, school and community activism (leadership and participation); financial need; and relationship to, or sponsorship by a Pacific County Democrat club member. Hazard sirens testing

SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) monthly testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens is Monday, May 2, at noon. The AHAB sirens will sound the Westminster chimes for 10 seconds followed by a 15- second verbal message. The PCEMA has requested assistance from Pacific County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services volunteers in tracking the success of the test. Columbia-Pacific Farmers’ Market

LONG BEACH – The new Columbia-Pacific Farmers’ Market, a Friday afternoon market in downtown Long Beach, will open on May 6 and will be open each Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. through September. The new market will offer fresh, locally sourced produce, seafood, meat, eggs and dairy, as well as flowers, plants and locally packaged food. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September. Domestic Violence Project

ILWACO – Beginning at 4 p.m., on Saturday, May 7, the public is encouraged to attend a fundraising event called Oceans of Hope at the Artisan in Ilwaco. The evening consists of hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, items up for bid including one of a kind artwork, fine dining and hotel certificates, jewelry, charter fishing trips, books by local authors, locally canned seafood and much more. Bunco for breast cancer

LONG BEACH – Join in the fun at Bunco for Breast Cancer on May 7 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Super 8 Motel in Long Beach. All proceeds from this event will be used locally by Columbia Memorial to help uninsured and low-income women in our community to pay for mammograms and other women’s health checks. Peninsula Garden Party

OYSTERVILLE – Coast Community Radio (KMUN) presents its third annual Peninsula Garden Party on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oysterville Sea Farms at 34300 1st Street in Oysterville. Admission is free. Visitors touring the waterfront in Oysterville will see a wide array of native flora and fauna, and witness the productive farms of Willapa Bay. Host Dan Driscoll will be joined by master gardeners featured on KMUN’s popular gardening program, “Diggin’ the Dirt.” Starting at 10 a.m., they will preside over the sale of a unique variety of shrubs, annuals, perennials, herbs, vines, grasses, vegetable starts and more. In addition, Willapa Bay oysters donated by Willapa Resources and the Northern Oyster Company, Inc., will be available fresh from the grill served with special accompaniments, and there will hot dogs and beverages as well. Guests can stroll the grounds and then throw a blanket on the lawn beside the bay for picnicking. Starting at noon from the open doors of Willabay Specialty Foods, music will be performed until 3 p.m., by the Oyster Boys, the new combo of Joey Patenaude, Dave Crabtree, Dave Quinton and Liam Dunne. DSHS community meeting

SOUTH BEND – On Monday, May 16 at 6 p.m., the public is invited to a community meeting at the courthouse annex at 1216 W. Robert Bush Drive, regarding the proposed closure of the DSHS Community Services office in South Bend. There will be a time for questions as well as a presentation of information.

CHINOOK – After successful auditions, rehearsals are in full swing for the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists’ production of “The Sound of Music.” Be sure to mark your calendars for this exciting event. With a cast of 25 outstanding performers from Rosburg to Astoria to Ocean Park, “The Sound of Music” is guaranteed to be a memorable experience for all. Opening night is Friday, May 20, at 7 p.m. at the Fort Columbia Theater.
