ASTORIA Attention commercial fishermen a two-day drill conductor course will be offered March 17 and March 18 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., free of charge at Clatsop Community Colleges MERTS campus. Pre-Register for Kindergarten

PENINSULA Kindergarten pre-registration is being held for all Peninsula children who will be five years old on or before Aug. 31. You may pre-register your child at Ocean Park Elementary School or at Long Beach Elementary anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.  during the month of March. Cranberry Road is the dividing line; children living north of Cranberry will attend Ocean Park School, and those south of Cranberry will attend Long Beach Elementary. Please bring your childs birth certificate and immunization record (copies or originals). Your child does not need to be at pre-registration. PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association has something to brighten your day three local artists are showcasing some of their work during March and April. ILWACO Peninsula Quilt Guild is holding their 16th Annual Quilt Show Quilting at the Beach at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, Friday, March 18 and Saturday March 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, March 20 from noon to 4 p.m. The exhibition includes quilts of all types and sizes and will fill three galleries. Agatha Christie mystery

RAYMOND The Willapa Players production of The Hollow by famed mystery author Agatha Christie continues with performances set for Friday, March 18; Saturday, March 19; Friday, March 25; Saturday, March 26, and a Sunday matinee on March 27.  Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. at the Hannan Playhouse on Eighth Street in Raymond. LONG BEACH The Long Beach Relay for Life is hosting a free pancake breakfast on Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chautauqua Lodge meeting room, 304 14th Street NW in Long Beach. Stop in to enjoy a free breakfast and meet your 2011 Long Beach Relay for Life teams. This event will highlight the local relay set for June 24 and June 25 and will share some of the exciting activities that are planned. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet some local cancer survivors. Donations will gladly accepted at the breakfast, but are most definitely not required.

Night of blues

ILWACO Saturday, March 19, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Peninsula Players presents A Night of Blues with North Coast Blues and friends at the River City Theater, 127 Lake Street SE in Ilwaco. A trio consisting of The Swing Cats Richard Thomasian on guitar and Dan Golden on bass and drummer Clint Carter from the Buoy 10 band, North Coast Blues plays a variety of blues, funk and rock n roll and will feature guest musicians in its shows, including lead guitarist John Arevalo and Ken Honey Bucket Johnson. Arevalo played lead guitar for the Righteous Brothers band and is currently the lead guitarist and a vocalist for Ilwacos Buoy 10 band and has a solo act as well. Johnson is a founding member of the Hudson Rocket Band from Portland and the organizer of Blues By The Sea. With the guitar work of Thomasian and Arevalo combined on one stage, this show is one you dont want to miss. Beer and wine will be available. Food/Farm Summit

CATHLAMET The Wahkiakum Food and Farm Network and the Wahkiakum WSU Extension and Master Gardeners present the seventh annual Food and Farm Summit on Saturday, March 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at JA Wendt Elementary School in Cathlamet. The cost is $25 per person (advanced registration by March 15) and includes a day of informative workshops for urban and rural growers, continental breakfast and lunch. Admission at the door the day of the event is $30 per person. The keynote speaker is Ed Hume. AAUW tea

LONG BEACH The Willapa Chapter of the AAUW will present the annual Treasures of Time Tea Saturday, March 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. This year celebrates National Womens History month with a presentation representing Mary Ann Dickenson Adair, Marilla Washburn Bailley, and Bethenia Owens-Adair, three pioneer women of the Northwest, their stories and experiences in a conversation onstage while high tea is enjoyed by the audience. AAUW scholarship awards will be presented to local high school women, and Pat Donnelly, a former scholarship recipient will give a musical performance. WellSpring grants

PACIFIC COUNTY WellSpring Community Network is currently accepting applications for mini-grant activities from groups who serve children and/or families in the Long Beach Peninsula or Naselle communities.Past grants have been awarded for parenting enrichment classes, summer band camp, basketball camp, and youth adventure programs, among many others. Awards range between $50 and $500, on average. The application deadline is March 31, and all grant funding must be spent by June 30. Legion Boys and Girls State

PENINSULA Applications are due March 21 for the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary Boys State and Girls State at Central Washington University.  These programs are open to any high school junior who is going on to their senior year.  The young people selected to attend will spend a week at Central Washington University learning about American government.  Girls State is held from June 12 to June 18; Boys State is held from June 19 to June 25. Participants will experience the nations premiere youth leadership and government program.  They will build their very own government from the ground up. Students have the opportunity to live in a college dorm. They will experience working with other motivated boys or girls under supervision of people interested in helping them develop leadership skills. Cooking class

LONG BEACH On Monday, March 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., come to a cooking class on the advantages of a vegetarian diet. Free tax help

OCEAN PARK Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2010 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., through April 13. No appointment is needed this is a sign in and wait your turn service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2010), plus a copy of all 2009 tax records/return. Backpack ministry

OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Ilwaco and Long Beach are seeking donations of money or various food items in individual serving sizes to put in backpacks to send home with needy children in our community who dont have food to eat on the weekends. Some of the items needed include: V-8 juice or 100 percent orange juice, hot chocolate, oatmeal, cold cereal, granola bars, breakfast bars, muffins, bagels, bread, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, fruit cups, canned fruit, fresh fruit, chili, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese singles, Top Ramen, ravioli, soups, raisins, pudding cups, applesauce, string cheese and similar. ILWACO Tickets are now on sale for Peninsula Players presentation of The Fantasticks, book and lyrics by Tom Jones, music by Harvey Schmidt. RAYMOND The WSU Master Gardeners in conjunction with Grays Harbor College are offering a free workshop on vegetable and flower seeds on Saturday, March 26, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Riverview Education Center, 600 Washington Ave., in Raymond. Topics will include information on buying and collecting seeds as well as starting seed indoors for subsequent outdoor planting or when to plant directly outdoors. Republicans Gather 

SOUTH BEND On March 26 beginning at 5 p.m., the Pacific County Republicans will hold their annual Lincoln Day Dinner and observe the 100th anniversary of President Reagans birth. The event is at the Willapa Harbor Community Center at First and Alder in South Bend. The social hour, with silent auction and raffle, begins at 5 p.m., the prime rib dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Newly-elected Congresswoman from the 3rd Congressional District, Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler. Fresh will give an update on the latest news and efforts in the 112th Congress. Jaime will also speak about issues and Federal projects related to the local area. The keynote address will be given by Bill Bryant, president of the Seattle Port commission, who will talk on the Four Lessons on Liberty. Free CPR

OCEAN PARK Pacific County Fire District No. 1 and the Ocean Park Eagles Auxiliary are working together to provide CPR training to the community for free. A CPR class will teach you how to recognize a heart attack and what you can do to help save someones life. The event is funded by grant monies secured by the Eagles Auxiliary, and the fire district provides instructors certified by the American Heart Association. Oysters and Art

ILWACO Peninsula Rotary is presenting their 6th Annual Oysters & Art Fundraiser on April 2, at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Oysters & Art is a benefit for youth programs, including the Boys and Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula, the Family Health Center at North Beach childrens dentistry program and the Peninsula Arts Associations Youth Scholarship Program, along with a small portion allocated to our International projects. In addition to the silent and live auctions, there will be delicacies from our areas top restaurants, great entertainment, exciting balloon popping and just an all around good time for everyone. Casper Babypants

RAYMOND Pacific Countys Know and Grow Early Learning Coalition presents Casper Babypants live in concert at the Raymond Theater on Saturday, April 9, at 11 a.m. Chris Ballew, best known as the frontrunner for rock band the Presidents of the United States of America (PUSA), is Casper Babypants and has created a huge following with the preschool set with his hooky, cool and authentic pop. Scholarship Applications

OCEAN PARK Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual High School Graduate Scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach or Naselle/Grays River School districts. Graduating seniors, planning to pursue an education in the arts, are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibilities of applying for this $1,000 award. To be eligible for the PAA Scholarship, students must have developed an interest in art, completed 11th grade and maintained a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Applicants must attend high school in the previously mentioned school districts, or live and be home schooled locally.  Along with references, referrals and school transcripts, the applicants are asked to write an essay on their future art plans and present a portfolio of work during a follow-up interview. Any graduate interested in pursuing further art related education, through workshop classes, college courses, apprenticeships and such may apply.  Application deadline is April 15. Farmers Market volunteers

LONG BEACH The Columbia-Pacific Farmers Market will get off the ground in May. An authentic farmers market, this event will be exclusively a food market dedicated to showcasing the spectacular eats of the Columbia-Pacific region and to supporting and celebrating the hardworking people who bring those foods to our community. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September. PC Democrats Scholarships

PACIFIC COUNTY The Pacific County Democrats will award up to two $500 scholarships will be awarded to Pacific County high school graduates by the Pacific County Democrats. Home-schooled graduates are also encouraged to apply. Applicants will be evaluated on four weighted qualifications: Academic achievement (types of classes as well as overall grade point average); political, school and community activism (leadership and participation); financial need; and relationship to, or sponsorship by, a Pacific County Democrat club member.  Scholarships will be paid at the completion of the first term of school, following reception of an official college transcript showing satisfactory completion, and must be used within one academic year unless an extension is requested and approved. Application packets are available through the scholarship advisor at all county high schools and can also be found on the PCD website www.pacificcountydemocrats.com. Application should be completed and returned to the PCD, P.O. Box 455, South Bend, WA 98586 and must be postmarked no later than May 1.
