The Fantasticks

ILWACO Tickets are now on sale for Peninsula Players presentation of The Fantasticks, book and lyrics by Tom Jones, music by Harvey Schmidt. This show is set for 7 p.m., March 25 and March 26, April 1 and April 2 and April 8 and April 9; and at    2 p.m., Sunday, March 27, April 3 and April 10 in the River City Theater, 127 Lake St SE in Ilwaco. Herrera Beutler staff time

RAYMOND U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutlers office will be hosting mobile office hours on Wednesday, March 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to    6 p.m. at the Pacific Transit office at 216 N. 2nd Street in Raymond. Residents will be able to meet with Herrera Beutlers staff to seek assistance and ask questions about federal issues. 

Chickens, chickens, chickens

LONG BEACH The public is invited to a class on chickens on March 9 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Learn what free range means, why free range eggs are better, which chickens are the best egg producers, which chickens are the best for yard cleanup and lots more. Free tax help

OCEAN PARK Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2010 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from    11 a.m. to 3 p.m., through April 13. No appointment is needed this is a sign in and wait your turn service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2010), plus a copy of all 2009 tax records/return. Pre-Register for Kindergarten

PENINSULA Kindergarten pre-registration is being held for all Peninsula children who will be five years old on or before Aug. 31. You may pre-register your child at Ocean Park Elementary School or at Long Beach Elementary anytime between 8:30 a.m. and    2 p.m. during the month of March. Cranberry Road is the dividing line; children living north of Cranberry will attend Ocean Park School, and those south of Cranberry will attend Long Beach Elementary. Please bring your childs birth certificate and immunization record (copies or originals). Your child does not need to be at pre-registration. Spruce Logging Division 

ILWACO The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum located at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco has rescheduled the lecture on spruce logging by noted historian Bryan Penttila for Thursday, March 10 at 5:30 p.m. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition WWI Posters: On the Homefront, the evening will begin with a donut and coffee reception and an opportunity to view the exhibition.  The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the museums main hall. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission on Thursdays is free thanks to sponsorship by the Ilwaco Merchants Association.

Marine Resources Committee

LONG BEACH The citizen-based Pacific County Marine Resource Committee meets the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., March 10 at the Ocean Beach School District office on Washington Street in Long Beach. This committee works to understand, steward and restore the marine and estuarine ecological processes of the Washington coast in support of ecosystem health, sustainable marine resource-based livelihoods, cultural integrity and coastal communities. SandSations volunteers

LONG BEACH The committee organizing this years SandSations celebration is holding a meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m., March 10 at the Long Beach Depot building at 3rd Street NW, adjacent to Dennis Company. Volunteers are needed for a variety of activities, including fundraising, Facebook and Twitter bloggers, gift baskets, selling T-shirts and caps, judging, model for T-shirt sales on the web, pound-up for the large display sculpture in the city, setting up and taking down signage, correspondence and mailings, taking photos, possible float in Loyalty Day Parade and more. In addition, the group is working with the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum for a possible exhibit next year. Any memorabilia, stories, photos, posters or T-shirts about SandSations would be greatly appreciated and any goods donated for the exhibit would be returned. PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association has something to brighten your day three local artists are showcasing some of their work during March and April. At Ilwaco Library are paintings from Joan Taplin, at Ocean Beach Hospital enjoy paintings by Judy Leonard and Aileen Roberts and at the county building on Sandridge Road are painting from Jean Nitzel and Ruth Carpenter.

Agatha Christie mystery

RAYMOND The Willapa Players will open their production of The Hollow by famed mystery author Agatha Christie on Friday, March 11. A gala champagne opening, sponsored by the Raymond Kiwanis Club, will be held prior to the show. Tickets, at $9 each, are available from any member of that organization. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. at the Hannan Playhouse on Eighth Street in Raymond. Willapa Players veteran actors Tena Boggs, Jenny Allan, Scott Cowell, Mike Williams, Dotsi Graves, Jim White, Gracie Manlow and Dani Massin are joined by a couple of outstanding newcomers Shawn Friese and Bob Parks. Parks, who was formerly active with the Driftwood Players in Aberdeen, returns to the stage after an absence of a number of years. Completing the cast are two young adults Kelly Rockett and Rebecca Manlow who got their start in the Willapa Players Summer Youth Theater productions. Additional performances are scheduled for Friday, March 18; Saturday, March 19; Friday, March 25; Saturday, March 26, and a Sunday matinee on March 27. Tickets for other shows are $8 and are available at South Bend Pharmacy, Everybodys Video and More in Raymond, and at the door the evening of the performance.

Retired Game Warden talks

CATHLAMET Joe Schwab, a retired Oregon State Police fish and wildlife sergeant and author of Outlaws on the Big River, will visit Pioneer Church in Cathlamet at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 11 to talk about his recently published book chronicling more than two decades of chasing and pinching sport and commercial lawbreakers along the Columbia River and its tributaries. The author will also answer questions and autograph books. The danger, tedium and humor encountered while matching wits with determined fish poachers and law breakers makes interesting reading and provides insight into a field of law enforcement the public knows little about. Admission is free, books will be available for purchase. Donations and a portion of the book sale proceeds will benefit youth programming at the library. Museum annual meeting

ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is holding their annual membership meeting beginning at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 12 at 115 Lake Street in Ilwaco. This will be followed by informal workshops on researching and caring for your family history.  Help will be available on Internet research techniques, organization and resources both local and national. In addition the collections manager will be available to look at and give advice on the care and storage of works on paper.  This will also be the last chance to view the WWI Posters: On the Home Front exhibit.  For further information call 642-3446.

Chinook Tribal meeting

ILWACO The Chinook Tribal Council will meet on Saturday, March 12, at      11 a.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Tribal members are encouraged to attend. Empty Bowl project

SEAVIEW Students of the Ocean Beach School District, artists with Peninsula Arts Association and Peninsula Clay Artists and other Peninsula groups are creating handmade bowls to be sold at the Third Annual Empty Bowls Project, set for noon to 2 p.m., March 12, at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. Come to the event, select your bowl and for $10 each get the bowl filled with soup that has been prepared and donated by local restaurants, chefs and bakers. Money raised this year goes to Peninsula F.I.S.H., His Supper Table and Community Table. For additional information call 642-3115.

Ties To The Land 

ASTORIA Keeping family forests and farms in the family is the focus of a two-part workshop at 2001 Marine Dr., conference room 231 in Astoria. Set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., part one will be held March 12 and part two will be offered April 16. This workshop is about succession planning the human side of estate planning, focusing on ways to maintain family ties to the land from generation to generation. Many forest or farm landowners want to preserve their family lands but dont know how to involve family members in ownership and operation of their land-based businesses. Ties to the Land builds awareness of key challenges facing family businesses and motivates families to address those challenges. This event, offered jointly by OSU Extension and the Oregon Small Woodlands Association, will feature an example of a local familys experience in sustaining their ties to their land. Benefit concert

ASTORIA A benefit concert for the Clatsop County Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance chapter is set for March 13 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Astoria Moose Lodge at 420 17th St. The event will spotlight local and Northwest talent, from groups such as the Bugs, Lion Co., Tiger House and The Ascendents, and will help to provide public awareness of issues presently facing local transitional age youth, from teen pregnancy and homelessness to drug addiction. In addition to many local Northwest musicians, an auction will take place offering goods and services made available by many Clatsop County artists and merchants. A donation of $6 is suggested for admission however, larger amounts will be graciously accepted. 

Orchid meeting

ASTORIA The Sunset Empire Orchid Society meets at 2 p.m., March 13 at the First Lutheran Church located at 725 33rd Street in Astoria. The speaker this month is member KC Heckenberg, who will discuss transplanting seedling orchids from a flask to a pot. He has obtained seedlings for a hands-on experience. Pops concert

ASTORIA The North Coast Symphonic Band will perform a concert of pops music in the Liberty Theater in downtown Astoria at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 13 under the direction of Lee Stromquist who has selected music that entertains through a wide variety of familiar popular themes. The Northwest Jazz Trombone Project will start the afternoon with pre-concert entertainment at 1:30 p.m. This new ensemble is directed by arranger and trombonist Dave Robertson and will perform several of Robertsons arrangements for jazz ensemble. Regular admission is $10. Student admission is $6. Children 12 and under are free when escorted by an adult. Tickets are available in advance at the Liberty Theater box office at 503-325-5922. The box office is open Tuesday through Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and two hours before the event. The doors to the auditorium will open at 1:15 p.m., the day of the concert.

Cooking class

LONG BEACH On Mondays, March 14 and March 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., come to a cooking class on the advantages of a vegetarian diet. SmileMobile

LONG BEACH The Washington Dental Service Foundation SmileMobile will be in Long Beach from March 14 to March 18 to provide dental care to children from low-income families. The SmileMobile will be located at Head Start at 2611 N. Pacific Hwy, in Long Beach. Children birth through high school with limited access to care can be scheduled by calling Terry Bryan at the Ocean Beach Early Childhood Center before March 14 at 642-4089. A clinic manager, dentist and dental assistant, and teams of local volunteer dental professionals from the community staff the SmileMobile. Examinations will be conducted on Monday, March 14 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, March 15 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Follow-up treatment appointments will be scheduled on a space available basis for the duration of our stay. Medicaid and sliding scale fee is accepted as reimbursement for services.

Backpack ministry

OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Ilwaco and Long Beach are seeking donations of money or various food items in individual serving sizes to put in backpacks to send home with needy children in our community who dont have food to eat on the weekends. Some of the items needed include: V-8 juice or 100 percent orange juice, hot chocolate, oatmeal, cold cereal, granola bars, breakfast bars, muffins, bagels, bread, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, fruit cups, canned fruit, fresh fruit, chili, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese singles, Top Ramen, ravioli, soups, raisins, pudding cups, applesauce, string cheese and similar. NAMI meeting

SEAVIEW NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will meet on March 15 at the Peninsula Church Center at 3 p.m. The special guest will be Eric Cummins, executive director of Willapa Behavioral Health. Along with other guests, he will be talking about mental health issues that affect young people, such as co-occurring disorders (people with a diagnosable mental illness and a drug or alcohol addiction). He will also be discussing teen suicide and ways to detect and prevent it. NAMI is partnering with Wellspring to coordinate programs and activities that promote healthy young people on the Peninsula. PACIFIC COUNTY WellSpring Community Network is currently accepting applications for mini-grant activities from groups who serve children and/or families in the Long Beach Peninsula or Naselle communities. Past grants have been awarded for parenting enrichment classes, summer band camp, basketball camp, and youth adventure programs, among many others. Awards range between $50 and $500, on average. ILWACO Saturday, March 19, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Peninsula Players presents A Night of Blues with North Coast Blues and friends at the River City Theater, 127 Lake Street SE in Ilwaco. A trio consisting of The Swing Cats Richard Thomasian on guitar, Dan Golden on bass and drummer Clint Carter from the Buoy 10 band, North Coast Blues plays a variety of blues, funk and rock n roll and will feature guest musicians in its shows, including lead guitarist John Arevalo and Ken Honey Bucket Johnson. Arevalo played lead guitar for the Righteous Brothers band and is currently the lead guitarist and a vocalist for Ilwacos Buoy 10 band and has a solo act as well. Johnson is a founding member of the Hudson Rocket Band from Portland and the organizer of Blues By The Sea. With the guitar work of Thomasian and Arevalo combined on one stage, this show is one you dont want to miss. Beer and wine will be available. AAUW tea

LONG BEACH The Willapa Chapter of the AAUW will present the annual Treasures of Time Tea Saturday, March 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. This year celebrates National Womens History month with a presentation representing Mary Ann Dickenson Adair, Marilla Washburn Bailley, and Bethenia Owens-Adair, three pioneer women of the Northwest, their stories and experiences in a conversation onstage while high tea is enjoyed by the audience. AAUW scholarship awards will be presented to local high school women, and Pat Donnelly, a former scholarship recipient will give a musical performance. Tickets are $20 per person or $10 for children 12 and under, and are available at Okies Thriftway, Sweet Williams, Long Beach Pharmacy or at AAUW, P.O. Box 385 Long Beach WA 98631. All proceeds go to AAUW Young Womens Scholarship Fund for Ilwaco High School.

Legion Boys and Girls State

PENINSULA Applications are due March 21 for the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary Boys State and Girls State at Central Washington University.  These programs are open to any high school junior who is going on to their senior year.  The young people selected to attend will spend a week at Central Washington University learning about American government.  Girls State is held from June 12 to June 18; Boys State is held from June 19 to June 25. Participants will experience the nations premiere youth leadership and government program.  They will build their very own government from the ground up. Students have the opportunity to live in a college dorm. They will experience working with other motivated boys or girls under supervision of people interested in helping them develop leadership skills. Vegetable/Flower Gardens

RAYMOND The WSU Master Gardeners in conjunction with Grays Harbor College are offering a free workshop on vegetable and flower seeds on Saturday, March 26, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Riverview Education Center, 600 Washington Ave., in Raymond. Topics will include information on buying and collecting seeds as well as starting seed indoors for subsequent outdoor planting or when to plant directly outdoors. Republicans Gather 

SOUTH BEND On March 26 beginning at 5 p.m., the Pacific County Republicans will hold their annual Lincoln Day Dinner and observe the 100th anniversary of President Reagans birth. The event is at the Willapa Harbor Community Center at First and Alder in South Bend. The social hour, with silent auction and raffle, begins at 5 p.m., the prime rib dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Newly-elected Congresswoman from the 3rd Congressional District, Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler. Fresh will give an update on the latest news and efforts in the 112th Congress. Jaime will also speak about issues and Federal projects related to the local area. The keynote address will be given by Bill Bryant, president of the Seattle Port commission, who will talk on the Four Lessons on Liberty. Free CPR

OCEAN PARK Pacific County Fire District No. 1 and the Ocean Park Eagles Auxiliary are working together to provide CPR training to the community for free. A CPR class will teach you how to recognize a heart attack and what you can do to help save someones life. The event is funded by grant monies secured by the Eagles Auxiliary, and the fire district provides instructors certified by the American Heart Association. ILWACO Peninsula Rotary is presenting their 6th Annual Oysters & Art Fundraiser on April 2, at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco.
