Pruning

LONG BEACH On Feb. 9 at 6 p.m., there will be a class on pruning why, when and how to prune. The class will cover the basics of pruning in a demonstration and lecture form. Senior Housing Meeting

LONG BEACH The Pacific County Housing Authority invites the public to an open house at city hall from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 10, to explore options for senior housing, which will be built in the city of Long Beach. The meeting will be a two-way street you can learn what is innovative in senior housing and what innovations are available for this project, and you can tell those planning the project what Peninsula seniors and their families are looking for. Marine Resources Committee

SOUTH BEND The citizen-based Pacific County Marine Resource Committee meets the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Feb. 10 at the South Bend County Annex Building. This committee works to understand, steward, and restore the marine and estuarine ecological processes of the Washington coast in support of ecosystem health, sustainable marine resource-based livelihoods, cultural integrity and coastal communities. Line dancing

LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road.  Dancing for beginners starts at 5:30 p.m., intermediate and advanced dancers hit the floor at 1 p.m. and again 6:30 p.m., each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Kiss away cancer

LONG BEACH As a fundraiser for the upcoming Relay for Life of the Long Beach Peninsula, the Chinook Observer needs your vote for its Kiss Away Cancer contest. Living history

NASELLE At 1:30 p.m., on Feb. 13, Willapa Bay pioneer James G. Swan will come to life at the annual meeting of the Pacific County Historical Society at the Naselle-Grays River High School as living history actor Stephen Ricketts presents Life and Times on the Northwest Coast: The Story of Judge James G. Swan.  Swan was a pioneer and promoter who in 1852 settled at the mouth of Bear River between what is now South Bend and Bay Center. In addition to leading an accomplished life, Swan meticulously documented his experiences with early Northwest pioneer society and Northwest Indian life before and after settlers arrived on the scene. Orchid meeting

OCEAN PARK Because of a government delay, tax help will not start until Feb. 16. At that time seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2010 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., through April 13. Clamming

PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Feb. 18, 7:41 p.m. 0.6 and Saturday, Feb. 19,        8:21 p.m. 0.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Beach Pets Breakfast

LONG BEACH On Saturday, Feb. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon, there will be a breakfast at the Long Beach Elks Lodge to benefit the South Pacific County Humane Society. Sound Of Music auditions

CHINOOK Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) will be performing The Sound Of Music and is holding auditions for all the roles from 11 a.m. to       2 p.m., on Feb. 19 and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Feb. 20 at Fort Columbia. RAYMOND The Willapa Valley Grange is hosting a seed sale and gardening event at 290 Camp One Rd in Raymond on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Three lectures from local gardeners and soil amendment producers will include:  Using Trace Mineral Amendment Sea-Crop at 11:15 a.m.; Compost Tea Making at 1:15 p.m., Successful Fruit Tree Grafting at 2:15 p.m. Organic and conventional vegetable, herb and flower seeds selected for this climate are offered for $2 per packet. Local nursery vendors and Master Gardeners will be on hand to sell plants and talk gardening. Music provided by the band Worn Out Shoes. Northwest Passage

ASTORIA At 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, Capt. Russ Roberts presents The Inner Reaches of the Northwest Passage, at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria. Roberts talks about the 42-foot Westsail Fiona, its navigation and icy travails, arctic weather, the lives of its people and animals and the condition of the arctic ice amid  all the news about climate change. In Their Footsteps

FORT CLATSOP Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop is pleased to announce the next In Their Footsteps free speaker series event. Peninsula Pun-Off

ILWACO Attend and/or participate in the first Peninsula Pun-Off, to be held on Sunday, March 6, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Laugh as punsligners play with words, enjoy the silent auction, refreshments, door prizes and more all to benefit the Water Music Festival. The silent auction and social hour is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the contest from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is designed to draw punsters from far and wide. AAUW tea

LONG BEACH The Willapa Chapter of the AAUW will present the annual Treasures of Time Tea Saturday, March 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. This year celebrates National Womens History month with a presentation representing Mary Ann Dickenson Adair, Marilla Washburn Bailley, and Bethenia Owens-Adair, three pioneer women of the Northwest, their stories and experiences in a conversation onstage while high tea is enjoyed by the audience. AAUW scholarship awards will be presented to local high school women, as well as a musical performance by Pat Donnelly, a former recipient of an AAUW scholarship. Tickets are $20 per person or $10 for children 12 and under, and are available at Okies Thriftway, Sweet Williams, Long Beach Pharmacy or at AAUW, P.O. Box 385 Long Beach, WA 98631. All proceeds go to AAUW Young Womens Scholarship Fund for Ilwaco High School.

Farmers Market volunteers

LONG BEACH The Columbia-Pacific Farmers Market will get off the ground in May. An authentic farmers market, this event will be exclusively a food market dedicated to showcasing the spectacular eats of the Columbia-Pacific region and to supporting and celebrating the hardworking people who bring those foods to our community. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September. PC Democrats Scholarships

PACIFIC COUNTY The Pacific County Democrats will award up to two $500 scholarships will be awarded to Pacific County high school graduates by the Pacific County Democrats. Home-schooled graduates are also encouraged to apply. Applicants will be evaluated on four weighted qualifications: Academic achievement (types of classes as well as overall grade point average); political, school and community activism (leadership and participation); financial need; and relationship to, or sponsorship by, a Pacific County Democrat club member.  Scholarships will be paid at the completion of the first term of school, following reception of an official college transcript showing satisfactory completion, and must be used within one academic year unless an extension is requested and approved. Application packets are available through the scholarship advisor at all county high schools and can also be found on the PCD website www.pacificcountydemocrats.com. Application should be completed and returned to the PCD, P.O. Box 455, South Bend, WA 98586 and must be postmarked no later than May 1.
