Willapa Players auditions
RAYMOND Willapa Players will hold auditions for their winter production, The Hollow by Agatha Christie on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hannan Playhouse on Eighth Street in Raymond. Director LaRayne Watts says that the play is a web of romantic entanglements. There are parts for six men and six women: an older couple in their 50s or 60s; two men from about 35 to 50 and four women from about 35 to 50; a perfectly correct English butler of any mature age; a middle-aged police inspector; and two parts for younger people a young police sergeant and a maid. Production dates are planned for the first three weekends of March. In addition to actors, Watts says that she needs the help of a number of people for backstage work, costumes, and set building. If you are interested in participating in the play but cannot make either of the audition dates, please call Watts at 942-5239.

Whale Watching

WWI Posters
ILWACO From Jan. 8 to March 12, the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco presents the exhibition World War I Posters: On the Home Front, which explores the war through an exceptional collection of 36 lithographic posters that were made to influence Americans support of the war. The posters were used to promote support from the home front, to recruit men, money and resources and to encourage home front sacrifices in order to sustain the military campaign. The local stories of service to World War I will be told through artifacts from families representing Pacific County and beyond. Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays are free thanks to the Ilwaco Merchants Association. Safe Haven Project
PENINSULA Jan. 12 through Jan. 14, the public is invited to join the University of Washington Hazards Mitigation Institute along with state and local emergency management agencies for the next phase of the Pacific County Safe Havens Project. Building from the tsunami vertical evacuation preferred community strategy, the Long Beach Peninsula will have an opportunity to determine potential methods for integrating vertical evacuation structures in a community sensitive manner. This hands-on community design workshop will use interactive methods of discussing structure design and alternative uses and is intended to guide future implementation. No experience or prior involvement is necessary and all are encouraged to join in the discussion and activities. Orientation is Jan. 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Long Beach City Hall; Initial Design is that same evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ilwaco Community Building; Design Revision is Jan. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at tbe Ilwaco Community Building; and the Final Design Review component is Jan. 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Ilwaco Community Building. FORT CLATSOP Lewis and Clark National Historical Park at Fort Clatsop is hosting the next installment of its In Their Footsteps series. Dr. Douglas Deur will speak about Native peoples and National Parks at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16 in the Netul River Room. Dr. Deur is research faculty in the Department of Anthropology at the Portland State University and the University of Washington School of the Environment. He draws from his experiences working with American Indian communities that once occupied and continue to use national parks. He will discuss the issues, challenges and opportunities facing parks and Native people as they seek to protect places of cultural importance and to tell their stories to visitors in ways that honor their enduring relationships with these unique lands. RAYMOND Renowned naturalist Brent Nixon, CEO and president of Nature Talks Are you listening?, an organization dedicated to environmental education and endangered species research in the wild, will speak at the Raymond Theatre at 2 p.m. on Jan. 23 as the next Sunday Afternon Live event. Nixon created the non-profit Adventures in Nature more than eight years ago to answer growing requests from public education facilities and community groups for quality information about our environment and the creatures that dwell within it. Farmers Market volunteers
LONG BEACH The Columbia-Pacific Farmers Market will get off the ground in May. An authentic farmers market, this event will be exclusively a food market dedicated to showcasing the spectacular eats of the Columbia-Pacific region and to supporting and celebrating the hardworking people who bring those foods to our community. The market will include 20 or so farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, and package food producers, and will also feature entertainment and games. It will be a place to meet your neighbor every Friday afternoon/evening and have fun! Many volunteers will be needed each week from noon until 7:30 p.m., mid-May through September.
