YAKIMA — Emily Wilson earned a distinction no other athlete from Pacific County can claim in 2024.

She stood on the top step of the podium at the WIAA state track meet at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.

Wilson, a senior at Willapa Valley High School, had the fastest time in winning her heat in the 400 meters, then raced to the first-place medal in the final in a time of 1:00.29.

She wasn’t done, though. In the 200, she placed sixth in 26.95 for her second medal. Earlier, she had raced in a heat of the 100m, although her fourth-place time of 13.26 wasn’t fast enough to qualify for the final.

Other Vikings excelled, too.

Junior Sam Sheary placed fifth in discus with a throw of 104-4. She was four inches behind the fourth-place competitor. The winner threw 117-3.

“I am excited to come back next year,” said Sheary.

Junior Cody Strozyk earned the fourth-place medal in the javelin with a throw of 151-11. The winner, from Taholah, threw 170 feet.

Viking teammate Hank Swartz, a sophomore, placed 11th in the javelin field of 16 with 138-10. Swartz went home with another medal. He placed eighth in the triple jump with 37-7. The winner leaped 42-7.

Also competing was WVHS junior Owen Metcalf, who cleared 5-feet-4 in the high jump but did not place.
