Letter: Bruncke’s Bard views are disqualifying

Claire Bruncke has now announced her candidacy as a write-in candidate for school board, with a written statement comprised of blandishments that no one could object to because nothing is really being said.

In a recently published article by your newspaper, the laws in faraway Florida were criticized as being interpreted by some to restrict the teaching of William Shakespeare, generally regarded as the greatest author of the Western canon. Regardless of the accuracy of this assertion, that a proper education should acquaint students with knowledge of the literature of the Western canon and Shakespeare in particular remains an education standard.

In their evaluation of the suitability of Claire Bruncke to be a member of the school board, voters should be made aware of the national attention given her for her opposition to the teaching of William Shakespeare for no better reason than fashionably flimsy attacks on Western literature and Western civilization.

As reported in the New York Post, Claire Bruncke is quoted as saying that she quit teaching Shakespeare because she wanted to “stray from the narrative of white, cisgender, heterosexual men.” That she will bring with her to the school board such radical political views is enough to disqualify her as a suitable candidate.
