Little League: Lower Columbia All-Stars place third at state tournament

LOWER COLUMBIA — The Lower Columbia All-Stars 10-and-under youth baseball team concluded their season after finishing third in the statewide tournament last week.
In the opening-round game, the Lower Columbia team, consisting of players from area schools including Astoria, Warrenton, Knappa and Ilwaco, blew out Portland 32-0, followed by narrow loss to West Linn 4-3. The Lower Columbia team reloaded and rebounded by blasting Lakeridge 32-2 and Sandy All-Stars 12-1, before falling to the Sandy Golden Spikes 12-2, securing a third-place finish. West Linn went on to defeat Sandy 14-1 to win the 10-and-under state championship.
“It was a great season with a lot of success,” summed assistant coach Mooch Smith.
“We had hardworking kids and great family support. Our small-town kids competed and beat a lot of big cities. We’re all very proud of them.”
