Animal Shelter Report: Dex and Bruno are having a ‘bromance’

Published 2:53 pm Sunday, September 29, 2024

This happy local couple is Bill and Susie, who were thrilled to add adorable “Bruno” to their feline family. They have Dexter, a seven-year-old orange boy, at home and recently lost his buddy Harley to old age. Harley was a handsome black boy who lived to the ripe old age of 20! Dexter and Harley were the best of friends, and Dexter had been very depressed without his buddy Harley. As time went on, Dexter got even more down in the dumps, and spent most of his time sleeping.

Then, enter Bruno, who has definitely stirred the pot and brought life back to Dexter! Bruno’s shelter name was “Spot On” and he was definitely spot on when it came to his activity level. He was a lean, very active black boy who somehow managed to break his leg while in the Playroom! No one saw it happen or knows how he did it, but knowing how playful and energetic he is, we assumed that he fell off a piece of equipment. Bruno ended up having to sport a leg cast, and for some reason, the vet staff thought he should have a bright pink one — maybe in hopes it might slow him down a bit! Bruno had to wear the cast for weeks, and had to be isolated in his own tower cage, away from the Playroom and the other kittens.

Meanwhile, Bill and Susie started wanting to get a companion for Dexter, because he was just dwindling. They fell in love with Bruno’s picture on our shelter site, and couldn’t resist the busy little black boy in the pink cast. We often have people who ask us if it is a good idea to bring another cat home when they have an adult cat at home, and Bill and Susie were concerned about this also. Well, they took a leap of faith and brought Bruno home when his cast was removed, and the rest is happy history!

At first, Dexter was a little aloof with Bruno, but it didn’t take him long to be cast under Bruno’s spell, and now they have a wonderful bromance! Dex has come out of his slump, and is playing with Bruno and even grooming him. He no longer sleeps all the time. and is again his usual affectionate self with Bill and Susie. It’s a win! win! in just a matter of weeks!

We still have a wonderful selection of kittens and cats, and are continuing our BOGO (buy one get one) sale to help these felines find their forever homes. So, it’s a great time to consider bringing a buddy home for your kitty, or to adopt two kittens. You could be as happy as Bill and Susie and Bruno and Dexter!

Blessing of the Animals Saturday

This Saturday we are having one of our most popular community events, The Blessing of the Animals. This event is to celebrate the bond we have with animals, particularly the pets that bring such joy to our lives. All socialized pets are welcome — dogs on leash and cats in carriers, please. The event starts at the shelter parking lot at 1 p.m., with blessings conducted courtesy of the Rev. Richard Loop, Vicar of St. Peter Episcopal Church. Blessings will be non- denominational. Light refreshments will be served. We would be grateful to receive donations of items on our Shelter Wish List, particularly dog and cat food. The Blessing will take place outside, so pray for our recent nice Fall weather to continue!

We are open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday by appointment only for adoptions and surrenders. Stray drop-off, spay/neuter vouchers and pet food program are available during open hours.

View our available cats and dogs and submit an online application at our website beachpets.com. An approved adoption application is required before scheduling a meet and greet with your selected animal.
