After opening the season with a disappointing 65-25 loss to Onalaska, the Naselle girls basketball team responded with a narrow 40-38 league victory over Ocosta on Friday, Dec. 1.

“I was proud of the girls and how they bounced back after our loss to Onalaska,” said head coach Marie Green.

“The girls came out on fire in the the first quarter. They did really well applying pressure in our press. We did get into a little bit of foul trouble and that affected us in the second quarter. Coming out of halftime we started finding our rhythm again, and then it seemed like a lid was put over our basket. But we kept our composure and fought until the end.”

Naselle was balanced offensively, led by freshmen Aubrey Katyryniuk, who scored a team-high 10 points — the only Comet in double digits.

Green was especially pleased with the effort from sophomore Mylee Dunagan, who chipped in five points to go along with four rebounds and three steals.

“I have to give massive kudos to Mylee tonight. She did so well guard their big girl tonight (she is about 6’1). We were able to hold her to 10 points and that was great. With Ocosta dropping to 1B next year, this gives us an idea of what to look forward to.”

Up next: Naselle (1-2) will travel to face Firm Foundation Christian on Thursday, Dec. 7.

Ilwaco wrestling

The Ilwaco wrestling team started their season by participating in a tournament that included 20 other schools in Rainier on Saturday, Dec. 2. The Fishermen finished 14th overall as a team, led by Cody Miller, who went 5-1 and Wade Smith, who went 3-2, finishing in fourth place.

“Cody met his maximum match count and was not able to continue wrestling. In a normal tournament, he would have placed third with as many matches as he had,” said Ilwaco head wrestling coach Larry Kemmer.

“Wade (Smith) placed fourth in the 165-pound weight class. He wrestled up a weight class as he weighed in at 154. Others recording wins were Blake Bell, Ezekiel Sanchez and Gavin Estrada. All in all we did well and I am looking forward to competing again next week.”

Up next: Ilwaco will have their next match Saturday, Dec. 9 in Warrenton.
