Ilwaco’s three-way wrestling match-up with Astoria and Clatskanie Wednesday ended in celebrations for Larry Kemmer and the Fishermen boys’ squad.
Against Clatskanie, Ilwaco tied on team points with the Tigers 33-33 but earned the win because the squad had more pins. Contesting the hosts, Astoria, Ilwaco’s team score was 42-36; all matches ended in pins, with Ilwaco ahead 7-6.
Against Nestucca Saturday, Xavier Smith won the 113-pound division with teammate Blake Bell second. Oscar Gustafson placed fifth at 120 pounds and Ezekiel Sanchez was sixth at 130. In the 138-pound division, Luis Mendez was sixth. Teammates Logan Sansaver and Zech Taylor placed fourth and fifth respectively at 150. Wade Smith placed third at 157.
The boys will be in action in the Ilwaco gym 4 p.m. Wednesday, the first of three planned home meets.
The girls’ squad provided the cheering section for the boys’ midweek successes at Astoria, then traveled north to Aberdeen at the weekend.
“At the Grays Harbor Championship tournament, the girls did great, taking on some new tough competition,” said coach Frank Womack.
Four of the eight girls on the Ilwaco squad competed, with two freshmen leading the way. Abigail Doan placed third at 110 pounds and Bailey Womack placed fourth at 125.
“Kaylee Anderson and Angel Salas also competed, showing that they have vastly improved since the beginning of the season,” Womack added.
The team returns to the mat Wednesday at the Grizzly Girls Stocking Stuffer in Hoquiam and have added another meet at Tenino Friday to complete their pre-Christmas schedule.
