Please allow me to re-introduce myself with you. My name is Dennis Bolz. I worked with Debbie Oakes when I was your superintendent of schools and she was a school board member. I later was elected to four terms as a PUD commissioner from Chelan County. In that capacity I served as president of the state PUD association and was later recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association’s highest award. I am only stating the above to demonstrate a depth of understanding regarding the performance of elected PUD commissioners over a 16-year period and from a unique position.

It is my observation that when running for office candidates often make campaign promises based on personal observations and personal biases. Most, fortunately, as they gain experience, move from a personal agenda to a public awareness of customer needs and then establish policy to meet those identified needs. Some don’t! They continue to be self-serving while failing the people who elected them. Ms. Oakes falls into the first category.

In her first campaign she spoke to fiscal accountability and affordable rates. To a focus on community and customer service. She committed to being transparent and accountable. Committed to the development of county wide access to high-speed broadband and telecommunication. To maximize resources and partnerships and to continue to identify the greatest needs for the greatest number of customer/owners. She has succeeded in all of the above endeavors.

During her ‘rookie’ season it was my honor to serve as her ‘mentor.’ I was able to watch her make the transition from candidate Oakes to Commissioner Oakes. It was a seamless transition. She did not hesitate to reach out and ask for advice or lean on others with previous experience. Ms. Oakes did this while maintaining her ethical standards as well as a willingness to seek others support and opinion. A willingness to ‘reach across the aisle’ to make things succeed. She has continued to be trusted and supported by her colleagues statewide.

It is without reservation that I recommend Commissioner Oakes be returned for another six-year term. You now have a seasoned veteran who clearly ‘knows her stuff.’
