Sports Roundup: Comet football climbs to 4-0, Ilwaco CC trio finish among top four

Naselle football
The Naselle football team eviscerated the winless Evergreen Lutheran Eagles in an 88-0 blowout last Friday in Tacoma.
The Comets (4-0) rushed for 341 yards on just 13 carries, an average of 26 yards per rush, led by senior Caiden Burke (26), who ran for a team-high 105 yards and two touchdowns on only three carries. Naselle senior Jack Strange (44) had 104 yards and three touchdowns on three carries, while freshmen Eli Gardner (4) added 73 yards and two touchdown on just two touches. Naselle junior Gunnar Gill (22), Gus Burkhalter (24), Leith Chadwick (15) and Scott Henington (13) also scored touchdown for the Comets.
Naselle was led defensively by Strange, who had a team-high five tackles.
Up next: Naselle will host North Beach (1-3) Friday, Oct. 4.
Raymond/South Bend football
The Raymond/South Bend football team suffered their third straight loss after losing to Adna (2-2) 47-7 last Friday.
The Ravens (1-3) were led by senior Isaac Schlueter (15), who rushed for a team-high 57 yards and the lone touchdown on nine carries.
Raven sophomore defensive back Adam Mora (12) recorded a team-high eight tackles on defense.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend will travel to take on Pe Ell/Willapa Valley (2-2) in a league matchup Friday, Oct. 4.
Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football
The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football team (2-2) snapped a two-game losing skid by beating Lake Roosevelt (0-4) 34-28 last Saturday.
Up next: Pe Ell/Willapa Valley will host Raymond/South Bend (1-3) on Friday, Oct. 4.
Ilwaco cross country
Ilwaco’s cross country season had its best meet of the year last week, with freshman Elsa Linquist winning at North Beach. She completed the course in 22:10, more than a minute ahead of the second-place finisher from Ocosta. Third was junior teammate Sophie Bittner and fourth was freshman Taylor Morrison.
The boys were celebrating, too, with senior Sammy Lloyd finishing a close third in a field of 38 and four teammates placing well: freshmen Blake Eisbrenner and Alex Hernandez were seventh and ninth, senior Wyse Mulinix was 10th and sophomore Brent Curry was 12th. Their success meant the boys finished second as a team, behind only the hosts.
On Saturday, Sept. 28 some Fishermen squad members ran at Blue Lake, in Fairview, Ore., in extremely crowded fields. Linquist was 49th in her race, the third-highest finishing freshman.
Naselle cross country
Naselle’s cross country team ran Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Jack and Jill Invitational around Longview’s Lake Sacajawea. Amid competition from significantly larger schools, eighth-grader Kenzie Larson was 15th; sophomore Caesar Garcia was the best-finishing boy, some way down in the pack.
The Fishermen and Comet squads converge to run together at the home meet around Black Lake in Ilwaco Oct. 3, then both travel to Toledo Sept. 10.
Naselle volleyball
The Naselle volleyball team (4-6) split their two matches last week, including a straight-set win over Wahkiakum (5-2) before falling in four sets to Ocosta (6-1).
Up next: Naselle will host Taholah (5-1) on Thursday, Oct. 3.
Willapa Valley volleyball
The Willapa Valley volleyball team (5-2) split their two matches last week, including a marathon five-set loss to Ocosta (6-1) and a straight-sets win over Mary M. Knight (4-4).
The Vikings are currently second in the Columbia Valley League standings at 4-2, trailing only Taholoah (3-0).
Up next: Willapa Valley will host Wishkah Valley (1-5) on Thursday, Oct. 3.
Ilwaco volleyball
After notching their first win of the season last week over visiting Clallam Bay, the Lady Fishermen volleyball team (1-3) lost in straight sets to Hoquiam (4-1) on Monday, Sept. 23 in Ilwaco.
Up next: Ilwaco will host Toledo (2-4) Saturday, Oct. 5.
Ilwaco soccer
The Ilwaco girls soccer squad slipped to 0-6 on the season after losing three games last week, including a 5-0 loss to Warrenton, 3-0 defeat to Astoria and 10-0 loss to Ocosta.
Up next: Ilwaco will host Adna (1-4) on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
South Bend soccer
The South Bend girls soccer team collected their first win of the season last week, beating Toutle Lake (1-6) 4-1.
