Sports Roundup: Comet football, Viking volleyball rise in state rankings

Ilwaco volleyball
The Lady Fishermen volleyball team (1-5) dropped two matches last week, including a four-set loss to North Beach (2-5) and a three-set sweep by Toledo (4-5) on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Ilwaco, currently ranked 48th in the latest WIAA 2B RPI rankings, will seek to snap their four-game skid when they host 28th-ranked Raymond/South Bend later this week.
Up next: Ilwaco (1-5) will host Raymond/South Bend (3-4) Thursday, Oct. 10.
Willapa Valley volleyball
A red-hot Willapa Valley volleyball team (7-2) collected their third straight win after sweeping Wishkah Valley (1-7) and Wahkiakum (6-3) last week, climbing into the state’s top-10 1B rankings as a result.
The Vikings, currently second in the 1B Columbia Valley League and ninth in the 80-team WIAA 1B state rankings, will next face Naselle, currently ranked 27th.
Up next: Willapa Valley will host Naselle (5-6) on Thursday, Oct. 10.
Naselle volleyball
The Naselle volleyball team (5-6) inched closer to .500 after sweeping Lake Quinault (1-7) in straight sets last week.
With the win, the Comets climbed to 27th in the latest WIAA 1B state rankings, while remaining in fourth place at 1-1 in the 1B Columbia Valley League.
Up next: Naselle (5-6) will next travel to take on Willapa Valley (7-2) Thursday, Oct. 10.
Raymond/South Bend volleyball
The Raymond/South Bend Volleyball team (3-4) collected two wins last week in dominant fashion, sweeping Chief Leschi (2-4) and North Beach (2-5) in straight sets.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend (3-4) will travel to take on Ilwaco (1-5) Thursday, Oct. 10.
Naselle football
The Naselle football team recorded their second straight shutout last Friday by blasting North Beach (1-4) 78-0, improving to 5-0 overall on the season and cracking into the top-3 in the 1B state rankings.
The Comets (5-0) used their ground game to handle the Hyaks, rushing for 317 yards on just 17 carries, an average of 21 yards per tote. Naselle was led by freshman Gus Burkhalter (24), who ran for a team-high 89 yards and two touchdowns on just two carries. Remarkably, 12 different Naselle players carried the ball as the Comets relied largely on underclassmen in the rout.
Playing only one series, Naselle senior Jack Strange (44) had 46 yards and two touchdowns on two carries, while freshman Eli Gardner (4), junior Scott Henington (13) and junior Leith Chadwick (15) also added touchdowns on the ground. Henington, Strange, and junior Gunnar Gill (22) also had receiving touchdowns.
Naselle was led defensively by Strange, who had a team-high six tackles.
The Comets have risen to third in the latest WIAA 1B eight-man state rankings, trailing only Liberty Christian (5-0) and Northwest Christian (2-0), ranked first and second, respectively. Naselle’s remaining opponents include 43rd-ranked Chief Leschi (1-2), 30th-ranked Taholah (2-1), 24th-ranked Ocosta (3-2) and 26th-ranked Oakville (3-2).

Ilwaco football
The Ilwaco football team (4-1) had their four-game winning streak to open the season snapped in 28-0 home league loss to Forks (2-3) last Friday in Ilwaco.
Ilwaco, who had risen as high as fifth in the WIAA 2B state rankings among 45 teams across the state, fell to 12th following the loss.
Up next: The Fishermen (4-1) will next host Pe Ell/Willapa Valley (3-2) Friday, Oct. 12.
Raymond/South Bend football
The Raymond/South Bend football team suffered their fourth straight loss after losing to Pe/Ell Willapa Valley (3-2) 53-14 last Friday.
The Ravens (1-4) were led by senior Isaac Schlueter (15), who rushed for a team-high 71 yards and one touchdown on six carries. RSB senior quarterback Chris Quintana (4) accounted for the other touchdown while rushing for 13 yards on 10 carries.
Raven sophomore defensive back Manny Becerra-Souza (81) recorded a team-high six tackles on defense.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend (1-4) will next host Napavine (3-2) in a league matchup Friday, Oct. 11.
Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football
The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football team (3-2) notched their second-straight win after rolling Raymond/South Bend 53-14 last Friday.
Up next: Pe Ell/Willapa Valley will next travel to take on Ilwaco (4-1) on Friday, Oct. 11.
Ilwaco soccer
A young Ilwaco girls soccer team is still searching for their first win of the season after losing 10-0 to Adna last Wednesday, falling to 0-6 on the season.
Up next: Ilwaco (0-6) will travel to take on Napavine (4-1-1) on Wednesday, Oct. 9 before returning home to host Hoqiuam (1-7) on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Raymond/South Bend soccer
The Raymond/South Bend girls soccer team split their last two games, and now sit at 2-5 overall on the season.
The Ravens are ranked 28th in the latest WIAA 1B/2B state rankings among 45 teams.
