Animal Shelter Report: Handsome big Leo is Pet of the Week

Leo is very smart and eager to please, and enjoys learning new tasks.

Two-year-old Leo is an Anatolian shepherd mix who was surrendered to us when his owner could no longer care for him.

He came from a home with cats, a rabbit, and small children. This ancient breed descended from the mastiff types and flock guardian breeds of the Middle East. They were bred to protect flocks of sheep and goats from predatory bears and wolves, as well as human thieves. They are protective of their family members, including children, small dogs, and even the family cat! Leo might not do well in a home with very small children, not because he would purposefully be rough with them, but because he might knock them down just due to his large size- he weighs 88 pounds.

Leo is slow to trust people, and does not like strangers or to be touched by people he does not know. However, once he trusts you, he is your friend forever. He would be a loving and protective companion for a single woman or man. Leo is a powerful walker, and although he is leash trained, he tends to pull when he catches a scent. Because of this, he needs a large dog-savvy owner who is prepared to handle his strength. Leo has a congenital leg malformation on his front legs, where his legs bend inward. This doesn’t seem to slow him down, though! He is very smart and eager to please, and enjoys learning new tasks. He would like to have a fenced yard.

Leo is very ready to have a home of his own. Because of the characteristics of his breed, Leo would not be expected to have a “fawning” or needy type of relationship with his new owner, but will more than likely be very protective and loyal. If you are interested in Leo, go to our website beachpets.com and submit an application to us electronically. As Pet of the Week, Leo’s adoption fee has been halved to just $75!
