Ilwaco, Naselle cross country
Ilwaco and Naselle will send runners to the state cross country meet for the second consecutive year.
The WIAA state races will be run at the Sun Willow Golf Course in Pasco Nov. 9. While the 2B and 1B girls will run together, the boys will have separate races.
At the combined girls’ district race at Rainier Saturday, Ilwaco freshman Elsa Linquist placed fifth behind four runners on their home course. Her time was 21:43.07. Naselle’s Kenzie Larson was seventh, the highest-placing eighth-grader, setting a personal record of 22:42.63.
Fisherman junior Nora Soule was 10th and Comet freshman Karsen Green finished 14th, ahead of Ilwaco’s Taylor Morrison, a freshman, who also qualified, in 17th. Naselle’s Jaylee Bonk also qualified as an individual, but strong runs by Cheyenne Engelson, Shaylee Suomela and Ashlyn Eastham meant they placed high enough to earn the points to allow NHS girls to qualify as a team.
In the boys’ race, Toledo senior Treyton Marty won in 16:41. Four Ilwaco boys qualified. Senior Sammy Lloyd finished 11th in 19:02.77 and freshman Blake Eisbrenner, was 24th in the field of 57, with a PR of 19:53.22. Next came senior Wyse Mulinix and freshman Alex Hernandez who will run with them at Pasco.
Devin Day, Kasen Linthakhan and Druv Athmanathan also ran, putting Ilwaco sixth in points but not enough to qualify the entire team, narrowly edged out by Toledo.
On Wednesday, Naselle sophomore Caesar Garcia finished 14th in the field of 96 at a multiple District 1B race at Fort Steilacoom. He qualified for state as an individual for the second consecutive year with a time of 18:50.3. Last year at Pasco, the first year the Comets’s cross country program had been reinstated, he ran 19:32.20.
Junior Trajen Ford ran a personal best (20:20.5), as did sophomore Bo Dunagan (20:38.1) and classmate Logan Wirkkala-Scheller (21.33.4). Reilly Browning, Andy Rosas and Moses Schell also took part.
Naselle was the ninth-placed school in team points, just behind Wahkiakum, whose senior Noah Sandhu placed 20th and will make the trip to Pasco.
Pope John Paul II was the runaway team winner, with sophomore Kevin Hu winning in 17:10 and three teammates in second, fourth and seventh. That school’s girls also shone; state champion Ruby Henry, a sophomore, won in 19:15 with five other Eagles in the top 10.
