Elementary, my dear: ‘I hereby resolve…’ What words do you choose to live by in 2025?

As usual at this time of year, my thoughts turn to the future — as in what’s in store for our planet, our world, our country, and most importantly, for us right here on the western edge of the continent. Which way will we cleave — together or apart? And what will be our guiding light?

2,500 years ago (give or take) the guiding light of most of the world’s population was religion. That was the time when major religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Judaism were developing and influencing a large portion of the world’s population. And it was during that period that the ancient Babylonians became the first recorded people to make New Year’s pledges or resolutions. They believed that if they fulfilled their new year promises, the Gods would look favorably upon them in the new year.

Fast forward to now and our guiding lights are more diverse. Many say that money has taken on such a significant role in society and that it has become the new religion, especially in parts of the world where accumulating and spending money is a main focal point for most people. Others say technology and AI are beginning to dominate our lives. True or not, these are controversial points, criticized often as too materialistic in focus and threatening to overshadow other values like spirituality and community.

So… KISS

As I research and read the explanations and arguments and speculations, my thoughts swirl. “Keep It Simple, Stupid” blurts that voice in my head. And up pop the watchwords of my lifetime — often patriotic slogans (“Be Calm and Carry On”) or the chorus of a favorite song or even a meaningful quotation from a greeting card!

The first song lyrics I remember really trying to “live up to” were the words to “Accentuate the Positive” written by Johnny Mercer in 1944. I was eight and I Ioved the language usage, the rhythm, and the thought. I still do.

Pull Quote

The first song lyrics I remember really trying to ‘live up to’ were the words to ‘Accentuate the Positive’ written by Johnny Mercer in 1944.

You’ve got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive, E-lim-i-nate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative, Don’t mess with Mr. In-Between…

I was older when I first heard the British slogan “Keep Calm and Carry On.” I can’t begin to imagine how many times that mantra has seen me through a rough patch — whether one of a personal nature or a time when our whole country and beyond seemed to have lost its way. Those words are a firm reminder to stay focused and do what I can, no matter what.

And then there are the occasional greeting cards that speak to me. “Endure, and keep yourself for days of happiness” by Mary Engelbreit has come to mind more than once when I’ve found myself in circumstances I didn’t expect or choose.

And for 2025?

Which seems to bring me back to the here and now — Jan. 1, 2025. I wonder how many folks — from world leaders to my friends and neighbors — are considering their own resolutions on this day. And I’m even more curious about the most recent generations among us — Generation Z (born 1997-2010) and Generation Alpha (born 2010 – 2024).

Are the oldest of them making “New Year’s Resolutions” or is that a thing of the past? I’m sure they are listening to music – what are their favorites and do any of the song lyrics inspire them? Or, as we look at a new calendar year, does the concept of a “fresh start” go right by them? In their fast-paced daily lives of the here and now, perhaps New Years Resolutions are as antiquated as cursive writing.

And for me? Years of my own resolutions haven’t seemed to work; most have been long forgotten. But those ear worms that have been singing or ringing in my head for decades still resonate with me. And there are SO many that come to mind, often just at the right time. Yes, I think in 2025 I’m just going to “Keep on the Sunny Side” remembering that “Together We Can” and that “The Future Begins Today, Not Tomorrow.” Happy New Year!
