1B/2B Track and Field: Naselle girls make a splash at Ilwaco

ILWACO — The Naselle girls track and field squad splashed speedily to the team win at the Ilwaco track Thursday, March 27, with the Fishermen finishing fourth. Napavine ran away with the boys’ meet, with Ilwaco coming in second.
Athletes from six schools persevered through multiple soggy races — with one rare sunny spell, although it didn’t last long.
There were multiple highlights for both South Pacific County school,s led by Naselle’s June Miller, who had three wins. The freshman won the 100-meter in 13.56 seconds, the best time of 29 runners, with Ilwaco’s Taylor Morrison, also a freshman, third with a 13.84 personal record. In the 400m, Miller won in 1:10.10, just ahead of Morrison in second and sister Halle Miller third.
She won the high jump with a season best leap of 5-2, with Mylee Dunagan third and Halle Miller tied for fourth.
June Miller also placed second in the 200m with sophomore Sophia Colombo fourth. Colombo won the 100m hurdles with Halle Miller third.
Dunagan, a junior, won the triple jump with a distance of 30-7 with freshman Karsen Green in fourth. Sophomore Shaylee Suomela won the pole vault, clearing 6 feet with Green tied for third with a 5-6 PR.
Freshman Klara Davis placed third in the shot put ahead of Ilwaco’s Emma Smith in fourth. Junior Jessica Underhill placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 64-10.
NHS freshman Gus Burkhalter placed second in the triple jump with 36-5. Classmate Rylee Lozano was fourth in javelin, an event won by Wahkiakum sophomore Robby Chandler with a throw of 124-4.
For the home squad, Ilwaco freshman Elsa Linquist won the 800m, setting a PR of 2:58.23, with NHS’s Suomela third. In the 1,600m, Linquist also improved her PR but placed second behind Wahkiakum’s Mayleonna Casey; IHS senior Mya Cunningham was third.
Ilwaco’s Morrison won the long jump with 15-2 — 19 inches ahead of the next jumper.
Freshman Connor Ryden continued his good season for the Fishermen, winning the 400m with a PR of 1:00.80; classmate Michael Wright was a close third, also with a PR. Senior Sammy Lloyd powered to a win in the 800m, some time ahead of freshman teammate Davin Day in second.
Another senior, Wade Smith, won the pole vault with a season best of 9-6, ahead of two Comets, Jason Gardner and Burkhalter.
Smith placed second in the high jump with a PR of 5-4 and fifth in the 100m in a field that saw 43 boys recording times.
Blake Eisbrenner placed second in the 3,200m with a PR of 12:58.38 and second in the 1,600m ahead of Lloyd. Senior Caleb Brundage placed second in the shot put with a PR toss of 35-1.
Two IHS freshman, Michael Wright and Thendrix Besin, placed third and fourth in the 200m.
Next for Ilwaco is a trip to Winlock April 3; Naselle will travel to Rainier on the same day.
