Sports Roundup: Titan softball, Fishermen baseball team sweep away series

Ilwaco softball

The Ilwaco Lady Fishermen suffered their first loss of the season after getting swept by Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in a league doubleheader on Tuesday, March 25, dropping to 1-2-1 overall on the season.

In the first game, the Titans (3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then added five more in the second and four more in the third, taking a 11-0 advantage into the third.

Pe Ell/Willapa Valley freshmen Tylar Keeton (5) racked up five RBIs to go along with four hits to lead the Titans to a 16-1 five-inning win.

In the second game, Pe Ell/Willapa Valley exploded for 11 runs in the third inning, including a home runs by Sophia Milanowski (25) and Addison Merkel (19), culminating in a 16-0 Titan shutout after four innings.

Willapa Valley/Pe Ell finished with 15 hits, led by Tylar Keeton with three hits, with teammate Milanoswki (25) finishing with a game-high four RBIs.

Ilwaco finished with four hits, led by Gracie Wirkkala with two hits.

On Wednesday, March 26, Ilwaco tied Hoquiam 5-5.

Up next: Ilwaco (1-2-1) will travel to take on Raymond/South Bend on April 1, followed by an away game at Naselle on April 3.

Naselle softball

The Naselle softball team notched their first win of the season on Tuesday, March 25, beating Wahkiakum 24-6.

The Comets (1-1) only allowed one hit while racking up 17 as a team.

Up next: Naselle (1-1) will travel to take on Toutle Lake on March 31, followed by a home game against Wahkiakum on April 1.

Raymond/South Bend Softball

The Raymond/South Bend softball team ripped off four impressive wins to start the season before experiencing their first defeat to Adna on Thurday, March 27, dropping the Ravens to 4-1 overall on the season.

RSB beat Centralia, Wahkiakum and North Beach handily before losing to Adna 22-1.

Up next: Raymond/South Bend (4-1) will host Ilwaco on April 1, followed by an away game at Napavine on April 4.

Ilwaco track and field

Freshman Linquist wins three races

OCOSTA — Ilwaco track athletes warmed up for their home meet with a trip to Ocosta on Tuesday, (March 25).

Freshman Elsa Linquist won three races, the 800 meters, 1600m and 3200m, all in personal record (PR) times. Senior Mya Cunningham placed fourth in the 200m and 400m.

For the boys, senior Carter Humphreys placed second in the high jump, setting a PR of 5.4. Freshman Connor Ryden finished second in the 800m. Classmate Dexten Weidner placed third in long jump with a 16.10 PR, just ahead of Ryden.

Freshman Sam Eakin was third in pole vault with 6.0. Two other Fishermen placed fourth in their events, senior Skyler Salzman in the discus (101.6) and freshman Blake Eisbrenner in the3200m.

A 4x400m relay team of freshman Thendrix Besin, senior Sammy Lloyd, Humphreys and Ryden placed second.

Seven schools took part; Winlock won the boys’ meet and Forks won the girls’ meet.

Ilwaco baseball

The Ilwaco baseball team opened the season with back-to-back league wins over Wahkiakum on Tuesday, March 25.

The Fishermen (2-0) erased a 3-0 deficit in the first game, led by pitcher Corbin Johnson (17) and catcher Mark Ragan (7) who combined for five of six total Fishermen hits.

Johnson (17) pitched six innings for Ilwaco, allowing 10 hits and three runs with 7 strikeouts in the 6-4 win.

In the second game, Ilwaco again fell behind early, trailing 1-0 in the third inning  exploding for four run the fourth and three in the sixth inning to earn 7-3 win over the Mules. The Fishermen finished with 10 hits overall, led by Cody Kaino (27) with two hits and two RBIs.

Ilwaco sophomore Haddox Hazen (9) pitched four innings, allowing four hits and one run with one strikeout in the win.

Up next: Ilwaco (2-0) will host Raymond/South Bend on April 1, followed by an away game at Naselle on April 3.

Naselle baseball

The Naselle baseball team improved to 2-0 on the season after beating Wahkiakum 12-2 on Tuesday, March 25. 

Naselle senior Jacob Lindstrom had a game-high four hits and four RBIs in the win.

Up next: Naselle (2-0) will host Wahkiakum on March 31, followed by a game at Castle Rock on April 1.

Raymond/South Bend baseball

The Raymond/South Bend baseball team earned their first win of the year, beating North Beach 19-0 on Tuesday, March 25, improving to 1-3 overall on the season.

Up next: Raymond/South Bend (1-3) will travel to take on Ilwaco on April 1, followed by a game at home against Charles Wright on April 5.

Ilwaco soccer

The Ilwaco boys soccer team fell to 0-2 on the season after losing to Rochester 12-0 on March 24.

Up next: Ilwaco (0-2) will host Hoquiam on March 31, followed by a game against Raymond/South Bend on April 1.

Raymond/South Bend soccer

The Raymond/South Bend soccer team climbed to 2-0-1 on the season after beating Hoquiam 8-1 on March 24.

Up next: Raymond/South Bend (2-0-1) will travel to take on Ilwaco on April 1, followed by a home game against Rochester on April 3.
