Ilwaco’s track squad has applauded some generous help.
Head coach Crystal Bell said there are many to thank, especially the Ocean Beach Education Foundation, for donations totalling $56,800.
“This has brought much-needed upgrades to our program,” said Bell. “Thanks to this support, we now have a brand-new high jump pit and pole vault pit, complete with new standards, and an amazing pole vault pit garage to keep the mats protected from the elements.”
This garage extends the life of the essential pieces and spares adults in charge of the track program from the need to move them each season, she said. The standards were not in place for the March 27 home meet, but are expected to be installed later.
“Additionally, the funds allowed us to purchase new carts to help manage hurdles and block starts during meets,” Bell added. The sturdy net, which performs an important safety function at the discus-throwing area, was also replaced. “We are beyond grateful to OBEF for their commitment to our student-athletes and our community.”
The foundation provides money to help Ocean Beach School District teachers and administrators with purchases that are not covered by regular state funding sources.
Jeff Chabot, president of the foundation, said the track leaders’ request for funds fit perfectly with OBEF’s mission. “The previous set-up was no longer safe to use, and we were happy to help the track and field program as part of our biannual granting process,” Chabot said.
Three Fishermen high jump athletes, Wade Smith, Connor Ryder and Carter Humphreys, improved their personal bests at the March 27 home meet; Smith placed second, clearing 5-4.
“We would like to extend a thank-you to the Templin Foundation for our new high jump pit, as well,” Bell added. “It also had not been replaced in nearly 25 years and was much needed.”
High school track athletes participate in three throwing events. Shot put combines strength and technique, and requires a flat circle with a sturdy toe board.
“I would like to make a special shout-out to Kyle Jewell for his outstanding organization and planning in creating our new shot put throwing area,” Bell said. “Thanks to his efforts, we now have a double pit, allowing both boys and girls to throw simultaneously during meets and providing more opportunities for students to get valuable practice reps each day. We want to also recognize the other dedicated individuals who contributed to this project alongside Kyle, including Zach Jewell and Johnny Phillips.
“A huge thank you, as well, to Keith Wright and A1 Ready Mix, for generously donating much of the needed materials.”
Bell and assistant coach Sarah Taylor wanted to make sure the thanks to organizations and individuals were loud and public.
“All the hours of hard work you have given to this project have given so much to our program,” said Bell. “The Ilwaco track and field team, along with the coaches, are incredibly grateful for your kindness and support.”
