OCEAN PARK — Two weeks after a not-so-nifty prowl and theft, a man was captured by the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office and booked into the county jail. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours of Dec. 2 at a property on the 2000 Block of 245th Place in Ocean Park.

Ring camera footage captured a male in a green jacket, black baseball cap, blue jeans and rain boots entering the property. The man was observed attempting to destroy a surveillance camera but was apparently unaware another one was catching the deed along with his face.

The investigating deputy was able to compare the images captured with the camera to a driver’s license photo of Chad L. Menard, 45, of Ocean Park.

“The property has many ‘no trespassing’ and ‘security camera’ signs posted around the perimeter on the fence,” Deputy Justin Smith states in court records. “In other Ring camera footage, I observed [Menard] entering the gated and fenced area of the [property], where a permanent dwelling resides from the north side of the property, walk through the property to a gazebo and sit at a table.”

Menard was reportedly carrying a flashlight and was observed in surveillance footage peeking into a box of BBQ tools, locked cabinets and cracks in the gazebo.

“I observed Menard throw various items over the fence on the east side of the property and retrieve a wheelbarrow from the property, which he threw over the fence as well,” Smith states.

He then allegedly chucked the items into the wheelbarrow and fled the scene. The items are estimated to be worth a total of $300.

According to jail and court records, Menard was arrested on Dec. 16 and booked into the jail for second-degree burglary, third-degree theft, first-degree criminal trespassing, and an outstanding traffic warrant.

Menard was initially facing felony counts, which the Pacific County Prosecutor’s Office downgraded to misdemeanors before he made a preliminary court appearance. His bail was set at $10,000 during a hearing in the Pacific County South District Court on Dec. 17.
