Sports Roundup: Naselle, Ilwaco, Willapa Valley girls begin districts with big wins

The Ilwaco girls basketball team (13-6) started district play by beating Onalaska (9-11) 58-41 Saturday, Feb. 3, in the first round of the double-elimination WIAA 2B District 4 Tournament at Montesano High School.

Naselle girls basketball

The Naselle girls basketball team (7-12) opened district play by cruising past Three Rivers Christian (0-13) 66-24 in the first round of the WIAA 1B District 4 Tournament in a loser-out matchup Monday, Feb. 5 at Naselle High School.

The Comets were momentarily tied in the opening minute with the Eagles at 2-2 before 5-foot-10 freshman forward Aubrey Katyryniuk awoke to score six straight points, giving Naselle a 9-4 lead that they would never relinquish.

Buckets from Naselle senior Gladys Wilson, sophomore Mylee Dunagan and sophomore Mallory Helvey ended the first period with the Comets leading 19-6.

In the second, freshmen forward Brooke Davis (1) kickstarted a 15-6 run that ended with a Helvey three-pointer and a 34-12 halftime advantage.

Katyryniuk finished with a game-high 21 points, followed by Dunagan with 12 to lead the Comets.

“My girls came out ready tonight,” said head coach Marie Green following the victory.

“We are in a battle to get where we want to go and have a long road ahead of us. It was good to see the girls get a complete game tonight. That’s what we will need going forward,” she added. “All the girls played well tonight. I was able to get everyone though the rotation. It won’t be that easy going forward with other teams coming up, but it was nice to see a lot of positive things out of everyone tonight.”

Up next: Naselle will travel to take on Oakville (8-11) in a loser-out matchup at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Oakville High School.

Ilwaco girls basketball

The Ilwaco girls basketball team (13-6) started district play by beating Onalaska (9-11) 58-41 Saturday, Feb. 3, in the first round of the double-elimination WIAA 2B District 4 Tournament at Montesano High School.

Ilwaco freshman Mikaila Warfield (32) exploded in the fourth period, scoring seven of the Lady Fishermen’s final eight points en route to a game-high 24 points, with teammate Brooklyn Avalon (11) adding 18.

Up next: Ilwaco will face Napavine at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at WF West High School.

Willapa Valley girls basketball

The Willapa Valley girls basketball team (13-11) began district play by blasting Lake Quinault (0-12) 59-19 in the first round of the WIAA 1B District 4 Tournament in a loser-out matchup Monday, Feb. 5, at Willapa Valley High School.

Up next: Willapa Valley will host Columbia Adventist Academy (5-12) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at Willapa Valley High School.

Willapa Valley boys basketball

The Willapa Valley boys basketball team (10-11) will begin district play against Wishkah Valley (0-14) in the first round of the WIAA 1B District 4 Tournament in a loser-out matchup Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at Willapa Valley High School.

Raymond boys basketball

The Raymond boys basketball team (11-10) began district play by falling to Toledo (14-8) 60-49 on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the first round of the double-elimination WIAA 2B District 4 Tournament at Montesano High School.

The Seagulls battled for four periods, taking a one-point game into the fourth quarter before the Riverhawks closed the game on a 17-7 run.

Up next: Raymond will face the loser of Toutle Lake/Chief Leschi at 6 p.m. Feb. 9, at Rochester High School.

Raymond/ South Bend girls basketball

The Raymond/South Bend girls basketball team (12-6) will begin district play against Rainier (13-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Montesano High School.
