ThursdayWillapa Anglers

NASELLE – The Willapa Anglers meet on April 2 at Hunters Inn in Naselle. Dinner and beverages are from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Grays River steelhead and salmon fisheries studies are underway to hopefully make the Grays River great once again. WDFW staff Jeremy Wilson, Bryce Glaser and Todd Hillson will explain weirs, traps, counts results and more as well as their explorations along the watershed over the past several years and what they have discovered. The group has been given permission to haze cormorants, which are preying on endangered steelhead and salmon smolts. Volunteers with and without boats are needed. Alzheimer’s support

PACIFIC COUNTY – Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support groups provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are also on a unique journey of providing care to a person with dementia. FridayFree Symphony concert

ILWACO – The Clovis West High School Wind Symphony from Fresno, Calif., will perform at Ilwaco High School at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 3. This is a free concert. The group will perform a wide variety of music, with something for everyone. In addition, their jazz band will play a few selections as well. Spring art show

LONG BEACH – Peninsula Arts Association 18th Spring Art Show opens Friday, April 3 and runs through Sunday, April 5 at the World Kite Museum, 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. This annual event is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and admission is free. Featured artist for the show is potter Jan Richardson. PAA members exhibit entries in 22 judged categories and offer artist inspired ware in the Inspired Creations section of the show. A larger than usual selection of Peninsula area student art is an added attraction to this year’s show. The proceeds from an art raffle directly benefit PAA’s High School Graduate Scholarship Fund. SKAMOKAWA – Fisher Poet Dave Densmore and songwriter Alexa Wiley will perform a set of music and poetry together on April 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Redmen Hall/River Life Interpretive Center in Skamokawa. This unique, educational and entertaining performance, entitled “For the Love of Fish,” is about fishing and the proposed liquefied national gas terminals. Light refreshments will be provided. Regards to Broadway

ILWACO – The public is invited to the 2nd Story Playhouse, above Just Treasures Antiques in Ilwaco for the performance of the musical “Give My Regards to Broadway.” This production is directed by Rita Smith and produced by Laurie Carter, with choreography by Maggie Rose and Brianne Emry and accompaniment by Sandra Nielson and the Ilwaco High School Jazz Band. Cranberry museum

LONG BEACH – The Cranberry Museum on Pioneer Road is now open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the 16th season for the museum where you will find a wide assortment of cranberry products and can see a working cranberry bog. SaturdaySkate for cancer

LONG BEACH – On April 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Blake Bradshaw will be skateboarding at the Long Beach skate park area with the goal of raising cancer awareness and to raise funds to be donated to the American Cancer Society. Anyone interested in skating for fun and/or helping raise cancer awareness is welcome (participation does not require fundraising). OCEAN PARK – On Saturday, April 4 at noon, the Cranberry Queens of the Red Hat Society will be dying eggs, then decorating and delivering Easter baskets to Golden Sands Assisted Living Facility residents. Peninsula Pugs

PENINSULA – Got a pug? Like parades? Join a new group, Peninsula Pugs – a group of pugs who want to participate in the Children’s Loyalty Day Parade on May 2 in Ilwaco, at The Doggie Olympic Games on June 20, and the Fourth of July Parade in Ocean Park. Welcome are pugs and pug-mixes and their people who get together for pug play dates, parades and other dog events. There is no pugism here – all pugs are welcome (pet or show dogs, pug mixes, old, young, handicapped, rescued, blind, deaf, shy, outgoing, roly-poly and even an occasional slender pug). Non-pug pooches are welcome too. Anyone is welcome to join especially members from anywhere in Pacific Northwest, including the Oregon coast. To participate you just need to have a love for pugs! Hazard sirens testing

SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will conduct testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens at noon on Monday, April 6, at noon. The AHAB sirens will sound the Westminster chimes for 10 seconds followed by a 15 second verbal message stating “This is a test of the Emergency Management Agency Tsunami Warning System. This is only a test.” The PCEMA has requested assistance from Pacific County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services volunteers in tracking the success of each test. Flushing notice

SURFSIDE – The Surfside Water Department will continue their annual water flow and hydrant flushing between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. This process will continue for about one month, until April 23. Customers may experience temporary low pressure and/or water discoloration during the flushing process. If these conditions continue after 3:30 p.m., call 665-4171, ext. 228.

Grant opportunities

PACIFIC CTY – WellSpring Community Network has grant opportunities available for local programs that focus on the following areas: prevention of child abuse or neglect, youth violence, youth substance abuse, youth suicide, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, dropping out of school, or child out-of-home placement issues in south Pacific County. Past grants have been awarded for parenting classes, a basketball clinic, and Infant Safety Net supplies, among others. The application deadline is April 15. Total funds available are $2,500. SEAVIEW – During April, every Tuesday night the 42nd Street Café will set aside 10 percent of their sales to benefit the Water Music Festival Organization. This year Water Music Festival is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of bringing high quality music of various genres, including classical and jazz to the Peninsula. A Decadent Affair

RAYMOND – The Northwest Carriage Museum is holding “A Decadent Affair” on Saturday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 314 Alder Street in Raymond. For a $5 donation at the door you can join their mystery guests from the past as they tell tales that will take you back to the era of horse-drawn carriages. Westport Winery will unveil their Maritime Muscat, a delectable wine with flavors of banana on the nose with honey, tropical fruit sweetness and subtle spice on the palate. Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on April 11 and April 12, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Saturday, April 11, 9:33 a.m. -0.3 and Sunday, April 12, 10:11 a.m. -0.2. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Annual Easter Party

OCEAN PARK – On Sunday April 12, the Ocean Park Moose Lodge invites children from toddlers to 11 year olds to an Easter egg hunt, followed by surprises and treats. The festivities start promptly at 1 p.m. Greet the Easter Bunny and provide a basket or bag for gathering the goodies. Fun for everyone!

LONG BEACH – Discovery Coast Audubon Society of Pacific County is offering the first beginning shorebird classes on April 13, 20 and 27. LONGVIEW – On Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m., Willapa Hills Audubon will sponsor a program, “Wild Utah: America’s Redrock Wilderness.” The program is free to the public and will be held in the Cowlitz P.U.D. auditorium at 961 12th Ave in Longview. This multi-media slide show documents citizen efforts to designate public lands in southern Utah’s spectacular canyon country as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. In conjunction with the program, Bob Brister, interregional outreach coordinator for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, will give a presentation on the current status of the Utah wilderness movement. This is a must see event for those who want to learn about this tremendous American public lands conservation effort.

Free tax help

OCEAN PARK – Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2008 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 15. No appointment is needed – this is a “sign in and wait your turn” service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2008), plus a copy of all 2007 tax records/return. Spring into gardening

ASTOIRA – Clatsop County Master Gardeners are hosting spring into gardening with two upcoming events. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 16, TV personality and gardening expert Ed Hume will discuss “Growing Vegetables on the Coast” at Astoria High School auditorium. The cost is $5 at the door. Then on April 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds, eight speakers will present a variety of talks aimed at helping everyone grow their own vegetables and flowers. Attendees will learn how to stretch their budget by growing everything from exotic lettuces to carrots and peas. Topics include organic vegetable gardening, wild birds in the garden, pest controls, fruit tree care and pruning, growing cut flowers, community gardens and gardening with kids. The cost is $18 for the full day.

Poker run/pigout

CHINOOK – JJ’s final memorial benefit Poker Run and Pigout is set for Saturday, April 18. Sign up at the Chinook Inn in downtown Chinook from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The cost is $10 per person and includes the year bar and barbecue after the run. PUGET ISLAND – The Lower Columbia Economic Development Council is hosting the Wahkiakum Business Fair from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 18 at Norse Hall on Puget Island. This is a one-day, one-stop opportunity to gather information that should be helpful during these economically challenging times.
