Obituaries: Robert Shefler

PORTLAND – Ocean Park resident Robert D. “Bob” Shefler, 81, died Feb. 1, 2010, in Portland. The son of Robert and Kathleen (Dempsie) Shefler, he was born in Astoria on Jan. 12, 1928. His father was the civil engineer for Clatsop County for a number of years and he grew up in Seaside where he graduated from Seaside High School. Following high school he worked as an automotive mechanic.

Mr. Shefler served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following high military service he worked in the logging industry, both locally and in Labauchere Bay, Alaska. Following retirement he moved to Ocean Park in 1992. He was a member of the American Legion and the Ocean Park Moose lodge.
A devoted husband and father, he loved yard work, clamming and socializing with friends at the Moose. An excellent craftsman, he also remodeled homes. Trips and vacations were a priority, even if only a picnic on the beach. An avid reader, mornings often would find him with a cup of coffee playing solitaire. He always put the needs of others first. He married Lillian Salikike on Aug. 12, 1961, in Seaside.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian of Ocean Park; his sons, Robert Shefler Jr. of Seaview and Marvin Dorsey and his wife Dixie of Goldendale; two daughters, Shelly Forsberg of Ocean Park and her husband Roger, and Kathleen Shefler of Portland; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
