Order Poinsettias now!

    PENINSULA Its time for the annual poinsettia sale fundraiser for the Ilwaco Class of 2012. Proceeds go to the substance-free graduation party. Poinsettias are available in six-inch pots, with a choice of red, pink or white flowers. The cost is just $15 for one or $13 when you buy two or more plants. Potluck Dinner & Meeting

    LONG BEACH All are welcome to come to the Long Beach Grange on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m., for the monthly potluck dinner to be followed by a regular meeting. Bring a side dish or dessert and come and visit with your friends and neighbors and find out what the Grange is all about. For this gathering, attendees are asked bring some non-perishable foods that will be donated to the Food4Kids Backpack Program which provides food for kids in need. Suggested items are breakfast bars, single-serve oatmeal, juice, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese, crackers, soup, apple sauce, fruit cups, ravioli, vegetables, and other nutritious food.     OCEAN PARK  Friends of Ocean Park School (FOOPS) will hold a meeting at 3 p.m., Nov. 17 at the school. Crafts will be offered for children during this meeting time. Among the events in planning are a gift project for students in December, a school carnival in the spring, fundraising activities, and numerous others. All are welcome to attend and share ideas.

99 Percent Rally

    OCEAN PARK In support of moveon.org and their day of action there will be a rally on Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m. near the Ocean Park School for the 99 percent in support of teachers, firemen and public employees, to call attention to the need for jobs and to repair infrastructure, and to remind congress of the need for a safety net for social programs for seniors, veterans and the less fortunate in our country. Art Around Town

    PENINSULA Admiring local artwork is always uplifting and Peninsula Art Association encourages everyone to take time to check out local places to view several artists works. The PAA fall art show paintings, pastels and mixed media work are being shown at the Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. Andrea Traphagen, Debbie Rasmussen and Joan Taplin offer their creations at the Pacific County building on Sandridge Road. Cynthia Pride presents her wonderful watercolors at the Ilwaco library. Free Thursdays

    ILWACO Thanks to the generous support of the Port of Ilwaco, you can visit the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco on Thursdays free of charge. Holiday bazaar

    CATHLAMET  St. James Episcopal Church in Cathlamet is holding a holiday bazaar from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 and         10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19. Many vendors will be on hand with a wide variety of gift and decorative items for sale, as well as a large bake sale of Scandinavian goodies. In addition, a new edition of a cookbook originally produced in 1995 will be available for purchase. Lunch and supper of homemade soup, salad, breads and scrumptious desserts will be available. Food Bank hours

    ILWACO  Because of the holidays, the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Ilwaco will be only be open the second and third Fridays in November and December. That will be Nov. 18, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please bring a box or bags for your food.

Shoalwater Shenanigans

    OYSTERVILLE Peninsula Association of Performing Artists is presenting Shoalwater Shenanigans, based on the book Skulduggery on Shoalwater Bay at the Oysterville Church at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19. True stories of early area pioneers will be featured along with music of the time of l840-90. You will hear about the Bruce Boys, Oysterville getting started, a fired up Fourth of July, the teacher who was paid with a pig and many other happenings that run the gamut from humorous to touching all of it lively local history. Admission is by donation.

Christmas bazaar

    OCEAN PARK  Ocean Park Lutheran Church holds their Christmas bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Nov. 19 at the church. At this bazaar you will find handcrafts, baked items, candy and much more. A quilt will be raffled at 2 p.m., with tickets available the day of the event or prior to at the church office.

Cribbage

    LONG BEACH The Longest Beach Cribbage Club meets every Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Tavern in Long Beach. The play will be according to ACC rules. The cost is $5, with double elimination and 100 percent payback. Anyone with an interest is invited. For more information call 642-3994.

Shoeboxes of Joy

    PENINSUA A mens group from Ocean Park Lutheran Church called the Breakfast Bunch and Coast Community Action Program (CCAP) are hosting the Shoeboxes of Joy Holiday Project this year. The projects goal is to provide a filled shoebox to the low-income elderly and disabled who may not have family or friends close by. Between now and Dec. 10 it is hoped that a large number shoeboxes can be filled so that many can experience the joy of a thoughtful gift. Suggested items to fill the shoeboxes include: soap, small-sized shampoos, lotions, shaving cream, razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, puzzles, crossword puzzles, cookies, sugarless candies, a small ornament/decorative items, AA batteries, small flashlight, and many other such items. Those who wish to participate are encouraged to gift wrap a filled box and include a gift tag indicating if the contents are for a man or woman. Volunteers are needed to help put boxes together, create route lists and assist with delivery. If you are interested in participating or helping call DeAnn at 642-1105.

AAUW meeting

    ILWACO Scott Lee, Drew Herzig and Mark Perez, members of the Lower Columbia Diversity Project board, will speak at the 7 p.m., Nov. 21 meeting of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in the Coastal Community Action Plan (CCAP) dining room in the Ilwaco Community Building, 152 First Avenue North, Ilwaco. The Lower Columbia Diversity Project was formed to engage pro-actively with diversity issues in the region, educate the community on the benefits of diversity and tolerance, and provide a forum through which individuals, groups and organizations may address concerns relating to diversity in the community. Speaking Up

    ILWACO Speaking Up for our Community in South Pacific County is a gathering set for Monday, Nov. 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Columbia Education Center at the Port in Ilwaco. Join a group of concerned citizens and discuss the huge impact of the state budget cuts and proposed new cuts will affect everyday lives. Involved in this community dialog will be Grays Harbor College, K-12 education, WorkSource, community corrections, health and human services, state legislators, city and county government personnel and more.     OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at        7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays.     RAYMOND On Nov. 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to the grand opening of the new Pacific County Senior Center at 324 Jackson Street in Raymond. Holiday closures

    PENINSULA Post offices, banks and credit unions, as well as the Chinook Observer will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday. These businesses will be open regular hours on Friday, Nov. 25. Many businesses, city and county offices as well as Timberland libraries will be closed both days.

4th Studio Tour

    PENINSULA The Peninsula Arts Association is hosting their 4th Annual Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26. A combination of nine private studios and 10 public gallery studios, from Chinook to Surfside, will be open to visitors both days. One-of-a-kind, handcrafted art items fill each stop on the tour … perfect for holiday shopping. The tour is designed for young and not so young alike … meet artists in their workplace, watch demos at many stops, nibble delicious treats along the way and experience the chance to have that perfect piece signed with a special dedication by the artist. Flight of Bumble Bee

    SKAMOKAWA Irene Martin has written a definitive book about the Columbia River Packers Association, whose Bumble Bee brand of canned salmon is familiar to all of us, especially in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Full of historical photographs, this book follows the burgeoning 19th century salmon industry to the declining years over the course of the 20th century, and now into the 21st century with its global market.  Ms. Martin will sign Flight of Bumble Bee on Sunday, Nov. 27, also at Redmen Hall, during the festive holiday open house. Messiah

    ASTORIA North Coast Chorale is offering music for the entire North Coast community. For all those who like to sing the wonderful music of G. F. Handel, the Messiah sing-along is set for Sunday, Nov. 27, at 4 p.m., at the Astoria Christian Church at 1151 Harrison Street in Astoria. Listeners are welcome as well. This is an all-around enjoyable concert that benefits the local food banks during this special time of the year. Bring a donation for the food banks. Come and sing (or play) along with the North Coast Chorale with solos provided by your favorite community personalities.

Veterans meeting

Amahl & the Nigh Visitors

    ASTORIA At 7:30 p.m., on both Dec. 1 and Dec. 2, enjoy Gian Carlo Menottis Amahl and the Night Visitors at the Clatsop Community Colleges Performing Arts Center at 11th and Franklin in Astoria. This is a delightful opera, originally commissioned for television in the 1950s, and broadcast yearly since. It is the story of a young crippled boy and his encounter with three kings, who are on a journey to find and bring gifts to a special child. You wont want to miss the telling of this story by some of the most talented vocalists in our community: Ann Bronson, Louise Goyena, Deac Guidi, Will Caplinger, Michael Camponello, and John Dahlsten, with dancers from the Maddox School of Dance. This is a wonderful story that the entire family will enjoy. Tickets are $10 for everyone over 12; children under 12 are admitted free with an adult.

Penguins in Antarctica   

    LONGVIEW Ice, penguins and the cold comforts of living and working in Antarctica will be featured in a lively slide show by Oregon birder and author Noah Strycker, 25, at a special meeting of the Willapa Hills Audubon Society. The free one-hour Among Penguins event is scheduled for 7 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Cowlitz PUD Auditorium, 961 12th Avenue in Longview. Strycker spent three months during the Antarctic summer researching and photographing a quarter-million Adélie penguins. He recounts his experiences on the coldest, windiest, driest, least populated, highest and most remote continent in his new book, Among Penguins: A Bird Man in Antarctica (Oregon State University Press, 2011). A magna cum laude Oregon State University graduate, Strycker serves as associate editor of the American Birding Associations Birding magazine, has published photographs and articles in all major birding magazines, has contributed to several books and works as a bird researcher in adventurous places around the world.

Celebration of Lights

     ILWACOOcean Beach Hospital Foundations Celebration of Lights, the annual live and silent auction that benefits patients and programs at Ocean Beach Hospital, will be Friday, Dec. 2 at the Artisan at 114 Main Street S.W., in Ilwaco. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. The live auction starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes a choice of beverage, a commemorative wine glass or cider mug and a delicious assortment of appetizers. Spiced cider, wine, hors doeuvres and festive live music from the Finnish-American Choir of Naselle will be part of this years holiday gala. The auction is one of the hospital foundations signature events. Proceeds go to patient care and programs, such as the hospitals new oncology clinic. Auction items include original works and limited editions from local artists, a variety of gift certificates from merchants and restaurants, jewelry, custom quilts, home and garden items, gift baskets, and decorated Christmas trees and wreaths.     ILWACO Everyone is encouraged to come to the Port of Ilwaco for the lighting of the crab pot Christmas tree and the lighted boat parade on Dec. 3. Watch for more information.

Magnificat

    ASTORIA North Coast Chorales annual winter concert is set for 7 p.m., Dec. 10 and at 2 p.m., Dec. 11 at Clatsop Community Colleges Performing Arts Center at 11th and Franklin in Astoria. This concert will feature John Rutters Magnificat, the song of Mary featuring soprano soloist Genevieve Butenshon and an orchestra comprised of local instrumentalists. The second half of the concert will witness a visit from Santa as the Chorale sings the very popular Twas the Night Before Christmas assisted by the Astor Street Opry Players. Be sure to bring the children along to this event also; there will be music for everyone for the holiday season. Tickets are also $10 for anyone over 12 years of age; children under 12 are admitted free with an adult.

Tuba Christmas

    ILWACO  The Water Music Festival is proud to again present the Tuba Christmas Concert, featuring the Astoria Tuba Quartet, on Sunday, Dec. 11 beginning at 2 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street. This free, family-friendly event provides toe-tapping traditional music, including jazz and perhaps a polka or two. Donations will be cheerfully accepted.

Christmas party

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Eagles will again be hosting a Christmas party for children of all ages in the community on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., at the Ocean Park Lodge located at 1409 Bay Ave. All children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be a variety of activities to enjoy, including a visit from Santa. You need not be a member of the Eagles to attend this free event.
