Film snob

    RAYMOND Raymond Timberland Library presents, How to be a Film Snob in a Month: Horror Movies, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 5 for teens and young adults. Have you ever been around a movie know-it-all? Meet each week to watch and discuss a pivotal movie in the months featured genre so you can be the expert in your group. South district court info

Rachels Challenge

    ILWACO Kaylie Granlunds senior project is bringing Rachels Challenge to Ilwaco Middle-High School on Oct. 5. The Rachels Challenge organization will provide a guest speaker for an assembly at the school and then approximately 75 to 90 students will participate in a leadership training course. Then there will be an evening presentation starting at 6:30 p.m. Donations are being accepted to help get a Friends of Rachels Club started locally. Art Around Town

    PENINSULA  Three local artists from Peninsula Arts Association are displaying work at several locations. Linda Halstad is sharing her artwork at the Ilwaco library, open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; Arlene Jaynes paintings are available at the Pacific County building on Sandridge Road, open Monday through Friday; and at the Ocean Beach Hospital, paintings are presented by Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek. Most of the art is for sale.

Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners and intermediates is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and advanced dancers hit the floor from        6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. PAA Art show

    LONG BEACH Peninsula Arts Associations 41st Fall Art Show weighs anchor over Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 7 through Oct. 10, at the World Kite Museum at 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. On board for the show are the works of 47 local artists and three student artists, all competing for ribbons in 25 categories. Featured Artist is nationally recognized watercolorist and native peninsula resident Eric Wiegardt. A raffle of donated art benefits PAAs high school graduate scholarship fund and art enrichment program. PAA is a non-profit organization. Art inspired items created by many of the exhibiting artists will also be for sale. Admission is free and parking is plentiful. The art show is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Hospice Memorial

Kites for peace

    LONG BEACH  One Sky, One World, the international kite fly for peace will take place Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 with the World Kite Museum in Long Beach sponsoring the event. Bring a kite, any kite, and fly it to promote understanding among the variety of people in the world. Headquarters will be at the pavilion at the Bolstad Beach Approach in Long Beach. Cranberrian Fair

    ILWACO The annual Cranberrian Fair at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco is Oct. 8 and Oct. 9, and includes all things cranberry, foods, crafters, bog tours and more. Handmade items and amazing homemade peach/cranberry pies will be for sale also. Craft demonstrations will include rug hookers and a blacksmith. Talking plants

    SURFSIDE Rachel Gana, master gardener and instructor at Grays Harbor Community College, will give a fall planting talk and demonstration at the Surfside Homeowners Association office on Oct. 8, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., rain or shine. The free to the public event will feature bulb planting and other fall specialties. There will be several door prizes and the demonstration planting will be raffled. Lapp Kings Daughter

    NASELLE  The Lapp Kings Daughter, by Stina Katchadourian, is the subject of a book reading on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Naselle Timberland Regional Library (junction of SR-401 and Parpala Road). The book takes place in Finland during the Winter, Continuation and Lapland wars. Instead of her parents shipping her and her sister to Sweden, they keep them in Finland with the mother while the father is fighting on the front. The book includes letters written between the parents, so you see the events through their eyes and through the eyes of their young children. Ms. Katchadourian will read from the familys memoirs. Time is allowed for discussion, book signing, Finnish pulla and coffee. Farm to School auction

    LONG BEACH  The Long Beach Grange, located at 5715 Sandridge Road, is the site of an auction to benefit the Peninsula Farm to School program. The event will be from 4 p.m., to 8 p.m., Oct. 8. The mission of this program is to introduce more fresh produce into childrens diets while also educating them about the benefits of eating and growing fresh, local produce  growing healthy kids, one garden at a time. One of the goals of this group this year is to assist teachers in getting greenhouses constructed, as well as helping obtain related tools needed and volunteers to help with the program.

Sunnycamp 2011

    NAHCOTTA On Oct. 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunnycamp 2011 will be held at Camp Morehead in Nahcotta, just past the Port of Peninsula. A number of great northwest musicians will be attending Sunnycamp, which will be a day filled with maritime workshops and other workshops, including an Australian sing-along, autumn songs, Hawaiian songs and Sean Nos Singing. (The schedule is subject to change.) The maritime workshops start at 9:30 a.m., with Women at Sea by Alice Winship; from 10:30 a.m. to noon, enjoy maritime songs of the Pacific Northwest, by Tim Wittman; then from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., its maritime songs led by Bill Huot; and finally from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., come to the sea shanty workshop led by Wayne Pallson. Other workshops include Australian led songs by Dick Hamlet; autumn songs led by Mary Garvey; Hawaiian songs led by Barbara Millikin and Sean Nos singing led by David Ingerson. There will be late night singing led by camp participants (without songbooks), and everyone is encouraged to join. The camp is heated only by a fireplace, so bring a shawl and a folding chair if you have one. The cost is $5 plus $5 for any meals. Tsunami Train-the-Trainer

    OCEAN PARK Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will be offering a free six-hour course for Tsunami Public Education on Oct. 11, at Pacific County Fire District No. 1 at 26110 Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park. The course will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at      3:30 p.m. with a one-hour midday break. Workbooks will also be provided. Topics for the course include: near-and far-source tsunami events and scenarios, the Cascadia Subduction Zone, tsunami modeling, inundation mapping in Washington, local vulnerabilities, emergency management systems, human behavior to risk, and community training. Participants will gain skills and knowledge regarding: local hazards, risk reduction, tsunami response, and community assessment. The goal of this course is to better prepare the citizens and communities of Pacific County by developing and coordinating disaster preparedness public education programs. Candidates/Issues Forum

    LONG BEACH An issues forum, sponsored by AAUW, will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Chautauqua in Long Beach. This forum will be an opportunity to hear from your candidates for local office. The format will include a question and answer period. AAUW (American Association of University Women) is a non-political organization dedicated to education. This is a non-partisan event. Natalie Hanson will be the moderator for the program. Pacific Transit Meeting

    SOUTH BEND The Pacific Transit Authority Board will hold its fourth regular quarterly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 10:30 a.m., at the Pacific County Commissioners Meeting Room at 1216 W. Robert Bush Drive in South Bend. There will be a public hearing for comments on the 2012 Pacific Transit Operating and Capital Budget. The public is invited to come and be heard.

Bunco

    KLIPSAN  The Peninsula Bunco Club hosts a game Oct. 13 starting at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan Beach. Dues to join PBC are just $12 per year, and there is a $6 charge for each player each month; $1 is for the use of the senior center and the other $5 goes towards the prize pay out at the end of the session.     LONG BEACH Beer, Brats and Music! An Oktoberfest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15 from noon to 7 p.m., at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. The event is open to the public. Chronic conditions workshop

    ILWACO Living Well with Chronic Conditions, a free six-week course that runs Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17. The class runs from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Ocean Beach Hospital in the meeting rooms located at 174 1st. Ave. N., in Ilwaco. You can learn how to live a healthy life with your chronic condition by managing your symptoms. A chronic condition or illness is one a person has to live with for many years. Although there are many chronic conditions, people who come to this workshop often have similar symptoms such as: pain; loss of energy; fatigue and stress; sleeping problems; breathing problems; depression; anger and frustration; and concerns about the future. This workshop was developed by Stanford University.

Water Music Festival

    PENINSULA The Water Music Festival 27th annual program of concerts, themed as World Beat features music from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. Oktoberfest Chinook Style

    CHINOOK  Friends of Chinook School are hosting the 7th Annual Oktoberfest Chinook Style from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Chinook gymnasium. This fundraising dinner and auction benefit the restoration of the school and continued renovation of the gym. A live auction starts at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $ for children under 12. Catered by Joanne Leech formerly of the Sanctuary Restaurant, this is an event you dont want to miss. Plus there will be live music by Beach Buddies.

Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Oct. 28, 9:27 p.m. 1.6; and Saturday, Oct. 29, 10:26 p.m. 1.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Pumpkin patch fun

    LONG BEACH On Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to Sirens Square in downtown Long Beach for the second annual Great Pumpkin Patch and Harvest Festival. Kids 12 and under can pick out a pumpkin to take home, and all are welcome to stop by for free hot apple cider. A costume contest will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, with prizes to be awarded. Daylight saving

    PENINSULA Daylight saving time ends Nov. 6. At 2 a.m., all clocks should be turned back one hour. This is also a good time to change smoke detector batteries.
