Legion Safety Awards & Banquet

    LONG BEACH  The American Legions 24th Annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards Ceremony and Banquet will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. Dinner will be provided and 10 people who protect our safety on the Long Beach Peninsula will be honored at ceremonies after dinner. The speaker for the evening will be Mike Montaney, the national executive committeeman for the American Legion from the state of Washington. Special Olympics B-ball

Author Readings

    ILWACO  Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, hosts a monthly Authors Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for Oct. 26. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Attendees are welcome to come in costume if they wish. Chronic conditions workshop

    ILWACO Living Well with Chronic Conditions is a free six-week course that runs each Thursday through Nov. 17. The class runs from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital in the meeting rooms located at 174 1st. Ave. N., in Ilwaco. Why come to the workshop? Art Around Town

    PENINSULA  Three local artists from Peninsula Arts Association are displaying work at several locations. Linda Halstad is sharing her artwork at the Ilwaco library, open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; Arlene Jaynes paintings are available at the Pacific County building on Sandridge Road, open Monday through Friday; and at the Ocean Beach Hospital, paintings are presented by Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek. Most of the art is for sale.

Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners and intermediates is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and advanced dancers hit the floor from       6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month.     LONG BEACH From now through October, every Tuesday and Thursday, at 4:30 p.m. for teens and 5:30 p.m. for adults, all levels are invited to come to North Coast Taekwon-Do at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N. Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29, has been approved, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Oct. 28, 9:27 p.m. 1.6; and Saturday, Oct. 29, 10:26 p.m. 1.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Parkinson support

    OCEAN PARK The Parkinsons disease support group meets from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 28. at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church, 24002 U Street in Ocean Park. Christmas bazaar

    KLIPSAN From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29, the community is invited to a Christmas bazaar at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. Youll find beautiful handcrafted items, delicious baked goods, a raffle and lots more. Get your raffle ticket for prizes such as $100 cash, a handmade quilt, original prints by Eric Weigardt and Don Nisbett and more. Lunch will be served for a nominal fee. Cancer support group

    ILWACO  Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group meets Friday, Oct. 28 in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospitals chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. Racing movies

    RAYMOND  Each Friday in October, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:3 p.m., all ages are invited to Raymond Timberland Library to have snacks and watch racing movies, from the classic Grand Prix to NASCAR. Sight & hearing screenings

    KLIPSAN The Long Beach Lions and the Ocean Park Lions clubs are sponsoring a sight and hearing screening unit on Friday, Oct. 28 from     2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center located at 21603 O Lane. Family game night

    LONG BEACH Family Game Night is set for Oct. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Long Beach Elementary located at 400 Washington Ave. S. Come and hang out with your friends and neighbors! Bring the whole family to this free event. You will find: a toddler area; a Wii with two remotes; board games hosted in the cafeteria; busy activities in the gym. Carnival fundraiser

    ILWACO From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 29, all ages are invited to the high school for a carnival, which includes a bouncy house, inflatable toys, food and games. Ticket value is 25 cents although some booths may charge more than one ticket. Children may wear Halloween costumes if they choose. Call Jo at 642-3731 with questions.

Stew Luncheon & Bazaar

    GRAYS RIVER  Hearty beef stew, delectable cheese bread, coffee, hot mulled cider and dessert thats certainly enough to bring people from miles around to the Grays River Methodist Church social hall from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29. But thats not all. There will be some crafts, paintings, original clothing and home decorations, plus a second-hand shop and a bake sale will fill the church. Again this year, takeout meals will be available. The meal is by donation, and the crafts and baked goods, including breads, pies, cookies and candies, are reasonably priced. Drug take-back

    PACIFIC COUNTY  In an effort to eliminate unused/unwanted pharmaceutical drugs from our community, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is sponsoring a National RX Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  On this day, the WellSpring Community Network will be partnering with local law enforcement agencies to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our communitys medicine cabinets.  We invite you to participate. Pumpkin patch fun

    LONG BEACH On Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30 from      11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to Sirens Square in downtown Long Beach for the second annual Great Pumpkin Patch and Harvest Festival. Kids 12 and under can pick out a pumpkin to take home, and all are welcome to stop by for free hot apple cider. A costume contest will be held at     1 p.m. Saturday, with prizes to be awarded. Womens Day of Encouragement

    OCEAN PARK On Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., women are invited to the Peninsula Baptist Church for a day of encouragement. The day will be lead by speaker Patti Johnson, who will share the Beatitudes, said to be the best description found in scripture of who Jesus says his followers are. Johnson has been teaching Sunday school for 36 years, and spent 20 years with Bible Study Fellowship, 10 of those years as a teacher. Flu clinic

    PACIFIC COUNTY The Pacific County Health Department will have a walk-in flu clinic on Oct. 31 from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at 7013 Sandridge Road, Long Beach. The flu (or influenza) is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that affect the nose, throat and lungs. It spreads from person to person and can cause mild to severe illness, even death. Symptoms of the flu can be similar to a cold but are usually more severe and can include: fever (may be high), extreme tiredness, headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny nose and muscle ache. Even if you are very healthy you may pass on the flu to someone who isnt, even before you have symptoms. Bake sale & bazaar

    SEAVIEW There will be a holiday bake sale and bazaar from 10 a.m. to     4 p.m., Nov. 4 and Nov. 5 at Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. Attendees will find pottery, embroidery, cranberry baskets, jewelry, plants, knitting, hand-sewn items, books, glassworks, watercolors and lots more. Plus there will be homemade pies and coffee for purchase. Gift wrapping will also be available. Fifteen percent of the proceeds from sales go to the Ocean Beach Presbyterian Womens Association to help fund mission work both locally and abroad.

Come to the 4-H Lock-In

    WARRENTON Hey kids do you like to play games, make crafts and swim? If so come join the 4-H sponsored youth overnight lock-in on Nov. 5 at the KOA in Warrenton. It is for any youth in grades fourth through sixth who want to have some fun.     PENINSULA Daylight saving time ends Nov. 6.  At 2 a.m., all clocks should be turned back one hour. This is also a good time to change smoke detector batteries.

AARP meeting

    KLIPSAN Beginning at noon on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center is the first American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) meeting for the winter. The featured speaker is Dr. Clay Nichols, who will talk about climate change fact or fiction? Officers for next year will be introduced. The potluck will have a Thanksgiving theme. Detour Concert at Skamokawa

    SKAMOKAWA  The Americana band Detour will perform in concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Skamokawa Grange located next to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds at 16 Fairgrounds Road. The four-piece group consists of accordionist Toby Hanson, drummer Mike Friel, Steve Nebel on guitar, and band-leader Kristi Nebel on bass. All band members sing. The concert will include some of Nebels songs about the fishing fleets of Alaska, where they traveled with their music for six years. Accordionist Toby Hanson is familiar to the Naselle community with his band The Smiling Scandinavians regulars at the bi-annual Finnish-American Folk Festival. His expertise and love of polka music create welcomed contributions to the repertoire. Opening for Detour on Nov. 12 will be Sunrise Fletcher, longtime local favorite, who will perform songs from his ninth CD, Unplugged, including his own original songs. Refreshments will be available. Penguins in Antarctica   

    LONGVIEW Ice, penguins and the cold comforts of living and working in Antarctica will be featured in a lively slide show by Oregon birder and author Noah Strycker, 25, at a special meeting of the Willapa Hills Audubon Society. The free one-hour Among Penguins event is scheduled for 7 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Cowlitz PUD Auditorium, 961 12th Avenue in Longview.

    Strycker spent three months during the Antarctic summer researching and photographing a quarter-million Adélie penguins. He recounts his experiences on the coldest, windiest, driest, least populated, highest and most remote continent in his new book, Among Penguins: A Bird Man in Antarctica (Oregon State University Press, 2011). A magna cum laude Oregon State University graduate, Strycker serves as associate editor of the American Birding Associations Birding magazine, has published photographs and articles in all major birding magazines, has contributed to several books and works as a bird researcher in adventurous places around the world.
