Grange potluck meeting

Chronic conditions workshop

    ILWACO Living Well with Chronic Conditions is a free six-week course that runs each Thursday through Nov.  17. The class runs from         1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach Hospital in the meeting rooms located at 174 1st. Ave. N., in Ilwaco. Why come to the workshop? Art Around Town

    PENINSULA  Three local artists from Peninsula Arts Association are displaying work at several locations. Linda Halstad is sharing her artwork at the Ilwaco library, open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; Arlene Jaynes paintings are available at the Pacific County building on Sandridge Road, open Monday through Friday; and at the Ocean Beach Hospital, paintings are presented by Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek. Most of the art is for sale.

Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners and intermediates is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and advanced dancers hit the floor from       6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Free self defense

    LONG BEACH From now through October, every Tuesday and Thursday, at 4:30 p.m. for teens and 5:30 p.m. for adults, all levels are invited to come to North Coast Taekwon-Do at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N.     ILWACO Thanks to the generous support of the Port of Ilwaco, you can visit the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco on Thursdays free of charge. Pink Panther

    ILWACO The Pink Panther Strikes Again continues in Ilwaco at the River City Playhouse on Lake Street. Come and see the reconfigured River City Playhouse with its expanded stage, great new lighting, comfy chairs and more. Show dates and times are at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, Saturday, Oct. 22 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23. Tickets are $10 and are available at Okies Thriftway in Ocean Park, Stormin Normans in Long Beach, at the Imperial Schooner in Ilwaco or at the door. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for our local food banks.

Racing movies

    RAYMOND  Each Friday in October, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., all ages are invited to Raymond Timberland Library to have snacks and watch racing movies, from the classic Grand Prix to NASCAR. The library is normally closed at this time and is only open for the program. For more information call 942-2408.

Oktoberfest Chinook Style

    CHINOOK  Friends of Chinook School are hosting the 7th Annual Oktoberfest Chinook Style from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Chinook gymnasium. This fundraising dinner and auction benefit the restoration of the school and continued renovation of the gym. A live auction starts at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $ for children under 12. Catered by Joanne Leech formerly of the Sanctuary Restaurant, this is an event you dont want to miss. Plus there will be live music by Beach Buddies.

Dance & dinner

    LONG BEACH From 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Oct. 22, bring the entire family to the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road for a community dinner and dance. Enjoy music provided by Ray Prestegard from KMUN. Dinner will be available at 5:30 p.m., with live entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner includes your choice of French dip or barbecue beef sandwich with a baked potato and vegetable for just $7. 155th Anniversary

    ILWACO Saturday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 23 there will be a celebration of the 155th Anniversary of Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be tours of the lantern rooms of Cape Disappointment and North Head lighthouses from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., enjoy the new exhibit Shipwrecks of Washingtons Coast at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. For information on these events and more call 642-3029.

Living History night

    SOUTH BEND  Local thespian Scott Cowell will reprise his role as a historical master of ceremonies at the Pacific County Historical Societys Fourth Annual Night of Living History dinner show this coming Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Willapa Harbor Community Center in South Bend. This years program will feature a presentation of historical fashions from the Pacific County Museums collection. A no-host social hour begins at 5 p.m., followed by dinner and show at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the museum, South Bend Pharmacy, and Sagens Pharmacy in Raymond or by calling Society president Steve Rogers at 942-7990 who will deliver tickets to your door.

Cribbage

    LONG BEACH The Longest Beach Cribbage Club meets every Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Chautauqua Lodge in the Anchor lounge at 14th Street and Ocean Beach Boulevard. SmileMobile in town

    LONG BEACH  Youth ages birth through high school are encouraged to visit the Washington Dental Service Foundation SmileMobile at Head Start 2611 N. Pacific Hwy., in Long Beach through Oct. 25. The SmileMobile is staffed by a clinic manager, dentist and dental assistant, as well as teams of local volunteer dental professionals in each community it visits. Medicaid and sliding scale fee is accepted as reimbursement for services. Schedule an appointment by calling Kristi Curtis at the Ocean Beach Early Childhood Center before Oct. 17 at 642-5471.

AA meetings

    OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays. Birding Class

    LONG BEACH    Discovery Coast Audubon Societys Education Coordinator Mary Atherton will teach a one hour beginning birding class emphasizing pheasants, turkeys, grouse, and quails on Oct. 25, at 2 p.m., at Lighthouse Oceanfront Resort in Long Beach Washington. Holiday One Act Plays

    ILWACO Try-outs for three holiday one-act plays will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25 and Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., at the River City Playhouse in Ilwaco. Giving In has parts for two young women (ages 25 to 35) and one young boy (age 7 to 9); The Ultimatum has parts for a middle-aged man and  woman, two teenaged girls, one young boy and one elderly woman;  Walnut Garland and Airplane Parts has parts for three women and three men. Everyone with an interest is encouraged to audition.

Masonic meeting

Legion Safety Awards & Banquet

    LONG BEACH  The American Legions 24th Annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards Ceremony and Banquet will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. Dinner will be provided and 10 people who protect our safety on the Long Beach Peninsula will be honored at ceremonies after dinner. The speaker for the evening is Mike Montaney, the national executive committeeman for the American Legion from the state of Washington.     ILWACO  Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, hosts a monthly Authors Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for Oct. 26. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Veterans meeting

Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Low tides adjusted for Pacific beaches those days are as follows: Friday, Oct. 28,     9:27 p.m. 1.6; and Saturday, Oct. 29, 10:26 p.m. 1.3. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Parkinson support

Cancer support group

    ILWACO  Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group meets Friday, Oct. 28 in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospitals chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. Come to the 4-H Lock-In

    WARRENTON Hey kids do you like to play games, make crafts and swim? If so come join the 4-H sponsored youth overnight lock-in on Nov. 5 at the KOA in Warrenton. It is for any youth in grades fourth through sixth who want to have some fun. It will begin at 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5 and end at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.  The cost is $18 and the signup deadline is Oct. 28. Space is limited. Carnival fundraiser

    ILWACO From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 29, all ages are invited to the high school for a carnival, which includes a bouncy house, inflatable toys, food and games. Ticket value is 25 cents although some booths may charge more than one ticket. Children may wear Halloween costumes if they choose. Call Jo at 642-3731 with questions.

Stew Luncheon & Bazaar

    GRAYS RIVER  Hearty beef stew, delectable cheese bread, coffee, hot mulled cider and dessert thats certainly enough to bring people from miles around to the Grays River Methodist Church social hall from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29. But thats not all. There will be some crafts, paintings, original clothing and home decorations, plus a second-hand shop and a bake sale will fill the church. Again this year, takeout meals will be available. The meal is by donation, and the crafts and baked goods, including breads, pies, cookies and candies, are reasonably priced. The church is on State Route 4 near milepost 18, on the hill above the Grays River Café. For information on the event, phone 465-2740 or 465-2240. Drug take-back

    PACIFIC COUNTY  In an effort to eliminate unused/unwanted pharmaceutical drugs from our community, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is sponsoring a National RX Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On this day, the WellSpring Community Network will be partnering with local law enforcement agencies to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our communitys medicine cabinets. You are invited to participate. Please bring any unwanted or unused prescription medications or unneeded over-the-counter medicines to the Family Health Center at 21610 Pacific Way in Klipsan; Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco or to the Naselle Timberland Library. Pumpkin patch fun

    LONG BEACH On Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30 from      11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to Sirens Square in downtown Long Beach for the second annual Great Pumpkin Patch and Harvest Festival. Kids 12 and under can pick out a pumpkin to take home, and all are welcome to stop by for free hot apple cider. A costume contest will be held at     1 p.m. Saturday, with prizes to be awarded. Daylight saving

    PENINSULA Daylight saving time ends Nov. 6.  At 2 a.m., all clocks should be turned back one hour. This is also a good time to change smoke detector batteries.

Detour Concert at Skamokawa

    SKAMOKAWA  The Americana band Detour will perform in concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Skamokawa Grange located next to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds at 16 Fairgrounds Road. The four-piece group consists of accordionist Toby Hanson, drummer Mike Friel, Steve Nebel on guitar, and band-leader Kristi Nebel on bass. All band members sing. The concert will include some of Nebels songs about the fishing fleets of Alaska, where they traveled with their music for six years. Accordionist Toby Hanson is familiar to the Naselle community with his band The Smiling Scandinavians regulars at the bi-annual Finnish-American Folk Festival. His expertise and love of polka music create welcomed contributions to the repertoire. Opening for Detour on Nov. 12 will be Sunrise Fletcher, longtime local favorite, so will perform songs from his ninth CD Unplugged, including his own original songs. Refreshments will be available. Admission to the two-hour performance is $10. Tickets may be purchased at the door. For more information call 795-8770.
