Bake bread

    RAYMOND All ages are invited to Raymond Timberland Library from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 11, for a program called Everybody Bakes Bread. Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered on Thursdays at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Through the summer, dancing for beginners is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; intermediate and advanced dancers hit the floor from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; with couples dancing at 7 p.m., each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month.     ILWACO  This years Blues and Seafood Festival promises to be bigger and badder than ever. The Friday Night All Star Jam, set for Aug. 12, is bringing back the Robbie Laws Band and the newly configured North Coast Blues Band. Saturday, Aug. 13 is turning into an all-day event with music from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., including the hugely popular Boogie Bone, Coyote Kings and Portlands own Norman Sylvester Band. Headliners feature The Harp Breakers, a great lineup featuring Vyasa Dodson and Dave Melyan of the Insomniacs, Peter Dammann of the Paul deLay Band, harmonica great Bill Rhoades, Cliff Ashmon of the Hudson Rocket Band, Franco Paletta of Franco Paletta and the Stingers, Kim Field of Kim Field and the Mighty Titans of Tone, bass great Albert Reeda and Jim Rafferty. The food court is expanding as well; with lots more delights from Peninsula seafood providers. Combination tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Jazz and Oysters) are just $40.

Steam Meet

    CATHLAMET  Come to the Elochoman Slough Marina at Cathlamet Aug. 12 through Aug. 14 for a Northwest Steam Society Annual Steam Meet. The event will have steamboats, steam cars and other steam powered equipment and will be an excellent opportunity to see this kind of equipment running first-hand and ask questions of people who operate steam equipment. Beltaine performs

    ILWACO The next performers in the Waikiki Beach concert series is the Northwest trio known as Beltaine, who play hammered dulcimer, guitar, flute and marimbula. Junior Rodeo

Walk for the Cure

    RAYMOND  Walkers should meet in the parking lot behind the Seaport and Carriage museums at Alder Street and Ocean Avenue in Raymond on Saturday, Aug. 13 to participate in a walk for the cure. Registration is at 9 a.m., the walk begins at 10 a.m. The cost is $20 per person (registration includes a breast cancer water bottle and snack). This is a 6.8-mile walk on the Willapa Hills Trail. Barbecue & hike

    ILWACO The Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, located at 3888 State Route 101, invite the public to their annual membership barbecue and hike to Long Island on Saturday, Aug. 13. The menu is delicious with salmon, oysters, hotdogs, salad and dessert. The barbecue will be served starting at 11:30 a.m. and the barge will begin departures at 12:30 p.m. The hike will begin at the south end of the island and go to the ancient cedar grove and return, approximately five miles total. All hike participants must have a life jacket to get on the barge and wear sturdy shoes. The hike and barbecue are included with your paid membership of $20 for individuals and $30 for a family. Jazz and Oysters

    OCEAN PARK  The 26th Annual Jazz and Oysters Festival will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Wilson Field, 25815 Sandridge Road in Ocean Park. (Please note the change from the previous location in Oysterville). Tickets for this event are $15. The festival site will be transformed into a jazz club complete with oysters, desserts, beverages, sausages and an array of other tasty tidbits. And then come the jazz fans and the music. The morning session will feature Zona Calda and Tall Jazz for the afternoon session. Bring your lawn chair or blanket, sunscreen and enjoy a magical day!

Clay & Raku Glazing

Art Around Town

    PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association members have some of their artwork on display around town. The paintings of Rose Power are being shown at the county building, paintings by Dian Schroeder and James Tweedie are being shown at the Ilwaco library, and paintings by Bev McDonald, Ruth Spani-Phinney, Janet Stomp and the pen and ink drawings of William Vandorin are now on display at the Ocean Beach Hospital.

Do Nothing Club

    OCEAN PARK All men are welcome to join our own Band of Brothers known as the Do Nothing Club held every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Lutheran Church at 240th and U Street. This group is a mixture of men from all walks of life. This is a non-denominational club that meets to play cribbage, shoot pool or just sit around having fun and solving the worlds problems. Help OP Food Bank

    PENINSULA Heres an easy way to make a difference in your neighbors lives. Local residents purchase one or more extra non-perishable food items when they go shopping and store it in a cool green bag provided by the Ocean Park Food bank.  On the second Saturday of every other month, food bank volunteers will pick up the bags and leave another bag. A list of desired food items is listed with the bag. Its a simple gesture that is sure to make a difference. Call 665-6567 for more information.

    LONG BEACH The Ilwaco Sports Boosters seafood feed will be held Thursday, Aug. 18 from noon to 8 p.m., at the Long Beach Elks, 110 Pacific Highway North. Meal choices include salmon (full plate for $15, a lite plate for $9), tuna (full plate for $12, lite plate for $7), and steamer clams ($12). Lite plates are available through 3 p.m. They will also be serving hot dogs ($3), chowder, beer, wine and pop. Proceeds will support local scholarships and Ilwaco Middle and High School sports programs.

Summer camps exhibit

    ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco announced a new exhibit, Summer Camps on the North Beach Peninsula. There will be an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Aug. 19.  Local author and historian Sydney Stevens will guest curate the exhibition. She is an alumnus of Camp Willapa and has written extensively on its history. The exhibition will include photographs, objects and stories from Camp Willapa, Camp Sherwood Forest, Camp Morehead, Camp Lily Del Dune (now the Dunes Bible Camp) and Hill Summer Camp. Fundraising garage sale

    OYSTERVILLE  The Oysterville Community Club is holding their annual garage sale at the historic Oysterville one-room schoolhouse from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 and from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 21. Glow Ball Tournament

    SURFSIDE Surfside Golf Course and the Pioneer Tavern are sponsoring the first Glow Ball Golf Tournament set for Saturday, Aug. 20 at      6 p.m. It is a two-person scramble, with nine holes played during daylight and nine holes placed at night. The $50 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, a barbecue (hot dogs, hamburgers, side dishes, pop, beer and glow balls). Transportation will be provided from Long Beach to Surfside. Art Walk

    ILWACO More than 15 businesses will open their doors on Aug. 20 for another wonderful art walk in Ilwaco at the Port of Ilwaco and downtown. This popular event features two raffles with free gifts from participating shops and restaurants. All of the proceeds go to local non-profits and community organizations.

    ILWACO From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Aug. 20, a free form Mosaic made by community members will be unveiled at the closing night of the Peninsula Clay Artists Clay Show at the Artisan, at 114 Main Street S.W., in Ilwaco. There is no charge to attend. Call 665-2603 for information.

Longboard races

    CATHLAMET The Third Annual Cathlamet Downhill Corral Skateboard Festival will return with excitement and anticipation to Cathlamet Aug 26 through Aug. 28. Kicking off the event Friday night is the slide competition and tight slalom, then Saturday morning is the 7.5-mile push race on Puget Island, followed by the sidewalk showdown around noon. Later that afternoon there will be a new event   a four-man boardercross event by the Maryhill Ratz.  The premier race on Sunday will be an exciting downhill race through town (ramps included).  This is a fully-sanctioned race with closed streets, hay bales and shuttle. Pacific County Fair

    MENL0 The Pacific County Fair is heading our way. Set for Aug. 24 through Aug. 27 at the fairgrounds located six miles east of Raymond on SR-6 in Menlo, this years theme is, An Old Fashioned Country Fair. Hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. There will be the Haworth Family Shows, carnival, the Percheron draft horses providing free horse-drawn trolley rides, Elvis tribute artist, Jason Whited, a musician, Stormy the clown, and lots more. Sing-A-Long

    LONG BEACH There will be a sing-a-long on the large stage behind the police station in downtown Long Beach on Sunday, Aug. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The worship team from Peninsula Baptist Church will lead an assortment of uplifting songs. Buzzards Breath Chili Cook-Off!

    CATHLAMET  Eighth Annual Buzzards Breath Chili Cook-Off in Cathlamet is set for Sept. 3 at the Elochoman Slough Marina. They are looking for some more chili teams to join us for the fun and activities. Grab your favorite recipe, your cooker, a pot, and enjoy a day of food, friends and fantastic chili. Hospice volunteer training

    LONG BEACH Harbors Home Health and Hospice will provide volunteer training beginning Sept. 8 and continuing Sept. 9, Sept. 15 and Sept. 16, in the county buildings public meeting room at 7013 Sandridge Road. The course will be a total of 20 hours. This is an opportunity to learn about hospice and to gain skills necessary to become a volunteer with our agency. The skills taught are helpful to anyone needing to care for a loved one with a terminal illness. Volunteers provide such as listening to and recording peoples stories; singing or playing an instrument; swapping old hunting, fishing or logging stories; reading books/papers aloud, or do light housekeeping. Are you a massage practitioner? Do you have pastoral experience? Elvis!

    OCEAN PARK  Back by popular demand, Justin Shandor, the winner of the worlds closest Elvis look-a-like and sound-alike will perform on Saturday, Sept. 10 as part of the Rod Run to the End of the World event. Shandor will perform along with special guests Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline and Connie Francis impersonators. The show will begin at 10 a.m. and go until 3 p.m.  You wont want to miss this performance of Elvis of the 50s, the 70s and The Vegas Showman.

This free program deals with how we communicate nonverbally, how to spot and interpret gestures, facial expressions and other cues, how to spot a lie, and other subjects.
