Pacific County Fair

    MENLO The Pacific County Fair is heading our way. Set for Aug. 24 through Aug. 27 at the fairgrounds located six miles east of Raymond on SR-6 in Menlo, this years theme is, An Old Fashioned Country Fair. Hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. There will be the Haworth Family Shows, carnival, the Percheron draft horses providing free horse-drawn trolley rides, Elvis tribute artist, Jason Whited, a musician, Stormy the clown, and lots more. Donations needed

Help OP Food Bank

    PENINSULA Heres an easy way to make a difference in your neighbors lives. Local residents purchase one or more extra non-perishable food items when they go shopping and store it in a cool green bag provided by the Ocean Park Food bank.  On the second Saturday of every other month, food bank volunteers will pick up the bags and leave another bag. A list of desired food items is available at the food bank.

Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered on Thursdays at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Through the summer, dancing for beginners is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; intermediate and advanced dancers hit the floor from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; with couples dancing at 7 p.m., each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Longboard races

    CATHLAMET The Third Annual Cathlamet Downhill Corral Skateboard Festival will return with excitement and anticipation to Cathlamet Aug 26 through Aug. 28. Kicking off the event Friday night is the slide competition and tight slalom, then Saturday morning is the 7.5-mile push race on Puget Island, followed by the sidewalk showdown around noon. Later that afternoon there will be a new event   a four-man boardercross event by the Maryhill Ratz.  The premier race on Sunday will be an exciting downhill race through town (ramps included).  This is a fully-sanctioned race with closed streets, hay bales and shuttle. Fort Columbia Tours

    CHINOOK Aug. 26 through Aug. 29 is the last weekend for tours at Fort Columbia, Battery 246. Tour times will be at noon, 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Come for the guided tour and discover the history of Fort Columbia and Battery 246.

Evening of One Acts

    ILWACO The Peninsula Players is hosting an evening of one-act plays showcasing local directors and writers at 7 p.m., Aug. 26 and Aug. 27 and at      2 p.m. on Aug. 28 at the River City Playhouse on Lake Street in Ilwaco. Summer camps exhibit

    ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco has a new exhibit, Summer Camps on the North Beach Peninsula. Local author and historian Sydney Stevens is the guest curator for the exhibition. She is an alumnus of Camp Willapa and has written extensively on its history. The exhibition will include photographs, objects and stories from Camp Willapa, Camp Sherwood Forest, Camp Morehead, Camp Lily Del Dune (now the Dunes Bible Camp) and Hill Summer Camp. Bake, book & more sale

    LONG BEACH  The Chinook Observers third annual Bake, Book and More sale will be Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at our office. Barn dance & potluck

    LONG BEACH To raise funds for the Feel the Thunder fireworks event, there will be a barn dance and potluck beginning at 5 p.m., Aug. 27 at 22000 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Lincolns Beard

    ILWACO The next performers in the Waikiki Beach concert series is Lincolns Beard, a four-piece, non-traditional folk band from Vancouver. Their music is described as jumping around stylistically from backwoods gospel to jaunty indie pop. The concert is at 7 p.m., Aug. 27 at Cape Disappointment State Park. Sing-A-Long

    LONG BEACH There will be a sing-a-long on the large stage behind the police station in downtown Long Beach on Sunday, Aug. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The worship team from Peninsula Baptist Church will lead an assortment of uplifting songs. Vespers

    OYSTERVILLE A Vespers service is at 3 p.m., Aug. 28 at the historic Oysterville Church. Bill Farmer, a retired Baptist minister will lead the meeting. Music will be provided by Kathleen Staub on the Celtic harp, with Suzanne Knutzen playing the organ. All are welcome to this casual, uplifting gathering.

Rescue team fundraiser

    LONG BEACH Show your support for our surf and cliff rescue teams and come to the Lost Roo for a spaghetti dinner and raffle from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30. The owners of the Lost Roo are donating 100 percent of the money from the dinner and raffle to South Pacific County Technical Rescue, Inc., a non-profit volunteer organization. Art Around Town

    PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association members have some of their artwork on display around town. The paintings of Rose Power are being shown at the county building, paintings by Dian Schroeder and James Tweedie are being shown at the Ilwaco library, and paintings by Bev McDonald, Ruth Spani-Phinney, Janet Stomp and the pen and ink drawings of William Vandorin are now on display at the Ocean Beach Hospital.

Do Nothing Club

    OCEAN PARK All men are welcome to join our own Band of Brothers known as the Do Nothing Club held every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Lutheran Church at 240th and U Street. This group is a mixture of men from all walks of life. This is a non-denominational club that meets to play cribbage, shoot pool or just sit around having fun and solving the worlds problems. Library book sale

    OCEAN PARK The Friends of The Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held Sept. 2, Sept. 3 and Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. Some books are marked for price; all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and 50-cents for regular size paper. On Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., bring your standard size paper grocery bag and fill it for $3 with books of your choice or for $5 purchase a reusable bag and fill with books. Stock up!  It is nine months until the next sale. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park Libraries.

Swap meet

Sunset Bonfire

    OCEAN PARK Please join the residents of Ocean Park to say goodbye to summer at a sunset bonfire on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Ocean Park beach approach. Sunset is at 7:54 p.m., that evening and people start gathering about 30 minutes prior to the big event. The Pacific County Fire District No. 1 handles the bonfire and also donates the fixings for delicious smores. Hospice volunteer training

    LONG BEACH Harbors Home Health and Hospice will provide volunteer training beginning Sept. 8 and continuing Sept. 9, Sept. 15 and Sept. 16, in the county buildings public meeting room at 7013 Sandridge Road. The course will be a total of 20 hours. This is an opportunity to learn about hospice and to gain skills necessary to become a volunteer with our agency. The skills taught are helpful to anyone needing to care for a loved one with a terminal illness. Volunteers provide such services as listening to and recording peoples stories; singing or playing an instrument; swapping old hunting, fishing or logging stories; reading books/papers aloud, or do light housekeeping. Rod Run

    OCEAN PARK Its coming … the 28th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World is set for Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 at  Wilson Field in Ocean Park. The spectator gate opens at 8 a.m., with a variety of fun events schedule throughout both days, including music, the show and shine, poker run and more. There will be a cruise after the show and shine, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 10. The Rod Run is now a successful event created for every classic car enthusiast regardless of age.  The Beach Barons take pride in the planning and presentation of a show, which offers tourists a well orchestrated and exciting event, one they will look forward to coming back and enjoying each year.  In turn the car club gives an enormous amount of support and recognition in the area, while promoting tourism on the Peninsula and neighboring cities.  The Rod Run is a family favorite and is noted for its emphasis on safety, entertainment, community spirit and plenty of activities for everyone. Elvis!

    OCEAN PARK  Back by popular demand, Justin Shandor, the winner of the worlds closest Elvis look-a-like and sound-alike will perform on Saturday, Sept. 10 as part of the Rod Run to the End of the World event. Shandor will perform along with special guests Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline and Connie Francis impersonators. The show will begin at 10 a.m. and go until 3 p.m.  You wont want to miss this performance of Elvis of the 50s, the 70s and The Vegas Showman.

Construction delays

    PENINSULA Pacific County Department of Public Works, on behalf of Flood Control Zone District No. 1, will place pipe across State Route 103 at 147th Place. This work is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 19. Preparatory work will be completed Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 with construction Sept. 21 and resurfacing on Sept. 22. Although the roadway will be open to one lane of vehicular traffic at all times, the public is advised of work in this area which may cause delays.     KLIPSAN  The Peninsula Senior Center, located at 21603 Pacific Way in Klipsan, is hosting a free public program entitled How to Read a Person Like a Book, presented by Dr. Robert Brake on Friday, Sept. 23 at noon. This free program deals with how we communicate nonverbally, how to spot and interpret gestures, facial expressions and other cues, how to spot a lie, and other subjects. Disaster Preparedness Fair

    OCEAN PARK On Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Second Annual Community Preparedness Fair will be held at Ocean Park Elementary School gym at 25701 Vernon Avenue. Come meet folks from NOAA, Washington State Emergency Management, the Department of Natural Resources, plus many more organizations. Plus Schuyler Hoss from the governors office will give a speech with an introduction of the presentation, Japan, Lessons Learned.
