Women in Business

    KLIPSAN  The next meeting of the Peninsula Women in Business is set for 5:15 pm., on Jan. 18 at Jimella and Nancis Market Café. Dr. Tracy Erfling has treated women and their families for more than 10 years. She graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine in 2000. She believes in using the most natural, least invasive methods possible to assist the body in achieving optimal health. The cost is $5 for urban bites and $for wine pours. Volunteer opportunities

    ASTORIA The Womens Resource Center is currently recruiting men and women to help with their programs or at events. Some volunteer opportunities include transporting clients to appointments or shopping, filling out paperwork and job applications, mentoring, answering the 24-hour hot line, accompanying clients to court, assisting at the safe-home shelter, and working in the Thrift Store. Interested applicants must meet with Teri See, volunteer coordinator, to complete the application process before the training begins on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at 1361 Duane Street in Astoria, with Executive Director Pat Burness facilitating. Make Parenting a Pleasure

    LONG BEACH Well Spring Community Network is offering a special parenting series to run weekly each Wednesday through March 14 at Long Beach Elementary School. Attendees will learn practical stress management and communication skills, gain a greater understanding of children, learn effective parenting skills and positive approaches to discipline and meet and network with other parents. There will be dinner at 5:30 p.m., with the class running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $25, with scholarships available. GED classes

    ILWACO  Winter quarter begins this month at Grays Harbor College Columbia Education Center in Ilwaco. Living Well Workshop

    ILWACO  Ocean Beach Hospital is hosting another workshop entitled, Living Well with Chronic Conditions, for six consecutive weeks from Jan. 19 through Feb. 23. Why come to the workshop? Free Thursdays

    ILWACO Thanks to the generous support of the Port of Ilwaco, visit the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco on Thursdays free of charge. Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners is at 5 p.m. intermediate dancing starts at 6 p.m.; and couples hit the floor at 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Benefit dinner

Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Pinochle

    LONG BEACH  The Elks Lodge at 110 N. Pacific Hwy., in Long Beach has open pinochle games each Friday beginning at 12:30 p.m., in a back room of the lodge. The cost is $1.50 and you need not be a member to play. Call 541-601-2542.

Al Anon family group

    KLIPSAN  An Al Anon family group meets from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 pm., every Friday in the conference room at Golden Sands at 21608 O Lane in Klipsan. The group is open to anyone who has been affected by alcohol use in a family member or friend. For information call 665-2510.

Beach clean up

    PACIFIC COUNTY  This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Peninsulas organized beach cleanups. There will be a potluck gathering and speaker the evening before from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Jan. 20 at the Peninsula Baptist Church in Klipsan. The beach cleanup is set for Jan. 21. After the cleanup, volunteers will gather at noon for a soup feed at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. Find more information at ourbeach.org.

Fruit tree production

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Grange, located at located at 5715 Sandridge Road, is offering a community class on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., upstairs at the grange. Grange member Alisabeth Buck will share her knowledge in the class, Hardy Fruit Tree Production on our Marine Coast. For more information, call 642-4953. The Heart of the Museum

    ILWACO  The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum has received a wide array of gifts over the past several years, from gift wrap imprinted with the Ilwaco Rail & Navigation Company locomotive, to a sled made from Columbia River Packing Association crates and many more. While they are not able to display all the wonderful donations to the museum, a cross-section of recent donations will be part of a special exhibition showing now through March 11.

Bunco for kids food

    LONG BEACH Each Monday at 7 p.m., a fundraiser for the Long Beach Elks sponsored Food4Kids Program will be held. Everyone is welcome to come play bunco, with proceeds going to help purchase food for a backpack of healthy food and snacks to get them through the weekend.

Comedy DVD program

    SEAVIEW NAMI Pacific County will have its monthly open meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the memorial room of the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place in Seaview. The program includes a 48-minute DVD from Vancouver BC, Cracking Up, based on a workshop in which 12 people develop and present stand-up comedy routines out of their own mental health experience. Cancer support group

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group meets Friday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospitals chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. Gong show

    LONG BEACH On Saturday, Jan. 28 Elks members and guests are encouraged to come to the Coin Box Gong Show, at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N. Pacific Highway, with proceeds benefiting the Tall Elks Therapy Program for Kids. The no host bar opens at 4 p.m., dinnnr is at 5 p.m., and the who starts at 6 p.m. The admission price is one filled Tall Elks coin box or $8 per person and includes dinner and the show. The show will include a variety of talented (and maybe not quite so talented) performers to entertain and delight. Attendees are sure to have a uniquely outrageous experience.     LONG BEACH On Saturday, Jan. 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Long Beach Grange the public is invited to a community dinner and concert featuring the Ilwaco High School Jazz Band taking the stage at 6 p.m. Dinner, served from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., will include lasagna, salad and garlic bread for $7. NOAA Weather Radio Program

    PENINSULA The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is participating in a NOAA Weather Radio Program designed to educate the public on the warnings and alerts that may be issued from the National Weather Service. On Feb. 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., a training will be held at Fire District No. 1 at 26110 Ridge Avenue and then from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., that evening at the Ilwaco Community Building at 158 First Avenue north. Program participants will learn important information about tsunamis and how to make a home preparedness kit during a presentation by the Washington State Emergency Management Division. By attending the presentation, participants will be eligible to receive a NOAA weather radio at no cost (if they meet the specified income levels). Residents of the Long Beach, Ilwaco, and Ocean Park vicinity are all welcome to attend this training; however, radios are limited to the first 50 residents per presentation who meet the specified income levels. Womens Heart to Heart lunch

    ILWACO  Gwen Meyer, an advanced registered nurse practitioner from the Naselle Medical Clinic, will be one of three speakers featured at the annual Womens Heart to Heart lunch, Feb. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. Listen to Your Heart is the theme of this years forum, which focuses on the unique health issues women face. The event is co-sponsored by Ocean Beach Hospital Auxiliary and Gift Shop and Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. In addition to Meyer, other speakers will include Dr. Pam Law, a naturopath from Portland and Geri Marcus, the education manager at Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. Meyers presentation is entitled What Is Your Blood Pressure Telling You? Laws presentation is entitled The Natural Path to a Healthier Heart. Marcus presentation is entitled Staying Alive: The Importance of Learning CPR. Tickets are available at Ocean Beach Hospital Gift Shop, Peninsula Pharmacies and Campiche Studios. CERT training

    ILWACO The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is offering training for disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact this area. The course is a total of 20 hours, spread over three instructional days. All course materials will be provided. In South County training is set for Friday, Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at Pacific Bible Church at 501 N. Strengthening families

    LONG BEACH  Parents and youth ages 10 to 14 are invited to a workshop entitled to a workshop entitled Strengthening Families to be held each Monday, starting Feb. 6 (except Feb. 20) through March 26.
