Red Hats luncheon

    LONG BEACH  The local Red Hats will go out to lunch at the Cove Restaurant located at Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 a.m.  Come, wear your red hat, and bring a friend. There will be no Thanksgiving dinner this year.

Chinook food bank

    CHINOOK The Friends of Chinook School is sponsoring the Chinook Food Bank in the Chinook School building at 810 State Route 101 in Chinook. The food bank will be open on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. November dates are Nov. 7 and Nov. 21. Call Loma at 777-8367 with questions.

    SEAVIEW  St. Marys Parish in Seaview will hold their annual Christmas bazaar Nov. 8 through Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to    4 p.m. Lunch and desserts will be available.

Book discussion

    RAYMOND  Raymond Timberland Library is hosting a book discussion from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Nov. 8 for adults. Join in a discussion of Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. Books are available for check out at the librarys circulation desk. World War II music

    ILWACO  Ilwaco Timberland Library is hosting a session called Sentimental Journey: Songs and Stories from WWII. This event is set for 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., Nov. 9 for adults. Wearing vintage World War II military uniforms, singer Dina Blade, WWII veteran and storyteller Ray Puddicomb, and pianist Hans Brehmer will perform a USO-style show. The performance features popular songs of the era matched with stories of Puddicombs wartime experiences. The program is followed by a 15-minute question and answer period. Ilwaco food bank

    ILWACO The Ilwaco St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank, located on Lake Street across from the museum, will be open Nov. 9 and Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Because of the holidays they will be open Dec. 14 and Dec. 21.

Ocian in View

    ILWACO  The annual Ocian in View cultural program is set for Nov. 9 and Nov. 10. On Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m., Canneries of the Lower Columbia by Irene Martin, will be featured at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco. This presentation is about Martins latest research on canneries of the Lower Columbia, and will focus on the McGowan Packing Company. Holiday Bazaar

    BAY CENTER  The Bay Center Womens Club is having their second Holiday Bazaar on Nov. 10, from 9:30 a.m. to        3:30 p.m., in the old Bay Center Store/Community Center. Proceeds from this event will help to fund community projects such as free school supplies, new baby supplies, and other general projects. For information please call Rheta Edwards at 875-0150.

Ocian in View continues

    ILWACO  The annual Ocian in View cultural program continues Nov. 10. As part of this program the historical significance of the newest addition to the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Middle Village/Station Camp Unit at McGowan, will be highlighted. On Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, the Columbia Confluences bus tour will run. Join Jim Sayce, Washington State Historical Societys manager for local projects, as he guides the tour and get a rare opportunity to tour St. Marys Catholic Church. The cost is $20 per person. Be sure to call the museum for reservations. Also on Saturday Nov. 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Chinook Tribe will host their annual salmon dinner at the museum. The dinner includes regional seafood, salad, Indian fry bread, dessert and beverages. The cost is $15 per person, seniors (55 and over) $13, children under 12 eat for $5. No reservations are required. Also from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., come to the How Horriable is the Day, an open house hosted by the Knappton Cove Heritage Center. Beach Barons cruise

    LONG BEACH  The Beach Barons will be going on another club cruise and stopping for lunch on Saturday, Nov. 10. Anyone wishing to participate should be at Pioneer Market at 9 a.m.  All interested in going should contact Dennis Farmer at 244-9574.

Monte Carlo fundraiser

    ILWACO On Nov. 10 beginning at 7 p.m., there will be Monte Carlo bowling at Hilltop Bowl in Ilwaco. The cost is $20, and reservations and prepayment are required. Jackpot tickets are also available for $1 each or six for $5. The will be money shots throughout the night. Proceeds benefit the local food banks. A donation bin will be available for a gift of non-perishable food items. This event is sponsored by Psi Phi Chapter and Epsilon Sigma Alpha. Call 642-2151 for information.

Veterans Day    

    LONG BEACH  Beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, the Long Beach Elks, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Don R. Grable Post #48 of the American Legion and Auxiliary will host an observance of Veterans Day for our community at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. A meal that includes ham, green beans, scalloped potatoes and beverages will be provided.  All attending are asked to bring a dish to share: those with last names beginning with A-L, please bring salads and M-Z, please bring desserts. All veterans (anyone who served in the armed services at any time), active duty persons and their families and community members are invited to attend. Winterize orchids

    ASTORIA  On Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., Sunset Orchid Society will hold a meeting at the First Lutheran Church located at 725 33rd Avenue in Astoria. Winterize Your Orchids  is the title of guest speaker KC Heckenbergs presentation. Quilt Guild meets

    SEAVIEW  Peninsula Quilt Guild meets Nov. 12 for the regular monthly meeting at 1 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center, located at 5000 N Place in Seaview. The special speaker will be quilt historian, artist and consultant Mary Bywater Cross. Her lecture will be Woolen Quilts: What and Why. She will be sharing information on woolen quilts, focusing on quilts as visual records of human activity.  She starts with Emma Geisy Wagner, who settled first on Willapa Bay before moving to Aurora. She also will be showing some woolen quilts from her own collection. People are asked to bring woolen quilts to share, old or new. The meeting is open to all who are interested. Community Historian Project

    ILWACO  The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is hosting the Community Historian Project which includes 15 weeks of one-day classes, speakers, tours, demonstrations and opportunities (January through April) followed by an additional 15 hours of advanced training. The goal of the project is to develop a cohesive group of knowledgeable people who can be called upon for information and who can become a heritage resource to their communities. Grable American Legion and Auxiliary Post and Unit No. 48 will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. in the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum.  A potluck at 6 p.m. will precede the regular meetings. Career Fair

    ILWACO Grays Harbor College is holding a Career Fair at the Columbia Education Center in Ilwaco on Nov. 13 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event is open to the public and will help connect our community to our local career opportunities. Future Events

Bunco for Food4Kids

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks holds bunco the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. The next game will be on Nov. 15. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. This program provides a backpack with food for needy kids to take home on Fridays so they have something to eat on the weekend. If you have questions call 642-8244.

Clamming

    PENINSULA The next razor clam digs are scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Nov. 15 through Nov. 17, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Parkinson support

    OCEAN PARK A combined October/December Parkinsons disease support group meets on Nov. 16 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church, 24002 U Street in Ocean Park. The speaker will be from the Crisis Support Network and the topic will be information for disabled or seniors during an emergency or disaster. For information, call Patti at 665-3284.

Shoalwater Shenanigans

    OYSTERVILLE and CHINOOK  Shoalwater Shenanigans II is returning Nov. l7 to the Oysterville Church and Nov. 18 to Fort Columbia Theater in Chinook, with performances at 2 p.m. in each location. This program includes stories and music from early days in the region. Thirty characters from Willard Espys lively book of local history, Skullduggery on Shoalwater Bay are brought to life on stage by local actors. Admission is $5 admission at the door. Art show & auction

    ILWACO The third annual art show and auction, called 6×6 by the Sea will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17. There will be more than 70 wonderful art objects produced by over 60 regional artists. The silent auction is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the live auction starts at 6 p.m. All are available for viewing (no charge) at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco and on our website, www.columbiapacificheritagemuseum.org. Tickets for the auction are $10 each.

Christmas bazaar

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Lutheran Church is having a Christmas bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Nov. 17 at 24002 U Street. There will be a quilt raffle drawing at 2 p.m. Plus, handmade items, baked goods and much more will be offered. Grannys Attic will be open as well as the fair trade booth. 4-H Turkey Shoot Fundraiser

    RAYMOND On Saturday, Nov. 17 from 12:30 p.m. to          3 p.m., at the Willapa Harbor Gun Club at 37 Butte Creek Road in Raymond, youth through adults are invited to participate in a 4-H shooting sports turkey shoot. Tickets are available at the range and are $5 for 10 pellets. Oven ready turkeys and prizes will be awarded in each age category. (Air rifles will be provided.) In addition there will be a bake sale, silent auction and lunch. This is a fundraiser for Pacific County 4-H Shooting Sports Project. For information call Toni at 875-9331.

Book signing

    CATHLAMET From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 17, author Irene Martin will be at the annual St. James Holiday Bazaar at 1134 Columbia Street in Cathlamet. She will be offer her latest book, Flight of the Bumble Bee: the Columbia River Packers Association. Also at the bazaar, attendees will find home-cooked meals, a Scandinavian bake sale, and a wide variety of vendors selling decorative and gift items.     LONG BEACH From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 23 and Nov. 24, the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road, will hold a Christmas bazaar. There will be local crafters with a good variety of handmade items available. Plus Santa will be at the grange on Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., for family pictures. Come find some great special gifts for that special someone.

Studio tour

    PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Associations 5th Annual Studio Tour offers two days of savory art exploration. On Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving weekend), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 17 private studios and area galleries open their doors to the public for a chance to see the hands of an artist at work. This peninsula-wide tour begins in Chinook and travels to the north tip of Surfside. Maps of the route are available at the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau in Seaview, the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce, on PAAs website at www.beachartist.org as well as in the Nov. 21 edition of the Chinook Observer. The event is free to the public and suitable for the young and young at heart.

Taking Control of Diabetes

    ILWACO Beginning at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, Mary  Martin will deliver a free educational program and share diabetes self-management and lifestyle strategies based on extensive training and her personal experience living with diabetes. Topics to be covered include: achieving good glucose control, learning about effective self-management, developing a balanced, healthy lifestyle, planning and prioritizing diabetes management, overcoming fears surrounding diabetes and finding resources for diabetes support. If you or someone you know is struggling with diabetes or has an A1C that is 7 percent or above, the A1C Champions® can provide motivation to take those first steps to better blood glucose control. Diabetes is a chronic, widespread condition characterized by high blood sugar in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, the hormone needed to transport glucose (sugar) from the blood  into the cells of the body for energy. Relay Christmas Bazaar

    RAYMOND Calling all Vendors! Raymond High School Relay For Life team is hosting the 4th Annual Hope For the Holidays Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to         2 p.m. at the Raymond High School Commons. Interested vendors can reserve a space for only $25 plus one raffle item. The bazaar gives local vendors a chance to sell their items, get their name out to prospective customers, and give back to Relay For Life in their community. Registration deadline is Nov. 28.     ILWACO  Vendors are wanted for the Pacific Bible Churchs Christmas Bazaar set for Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are looking for vendors who would like to have a table(s). It is $10 per space if you bring your own table and $15 if a table is provided. Ideas might be tables with Tupperware, Partylite or Mary Kay products, handmade items, honey, jams, etc. Space is limited and is filling up fast so please call Eric at 642-4466 if you want a space. Christmas bazaar

    RAYMOND  The Pacific County Senior Center is having a Christmas bazaar from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 7. Tables for the bazaar are $10 each. Shoppers will be able to pick up a wide array of homemade items. Admission is free. Come have a hot cup of spiced tea as you stroll the tables. Lunch will be served at noon. The cost for lunch for seniors 60 and over is $3.50, under 60 years old it is $8. Come support this great event. Proceeds will benefit the Senior Nutrition program.
