Wednesday, Dec. 12

Caregivers support

        LONG BEACH The caregiver support group meets from     2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the PUD auditorium at 9610 Sandridge Road in Long Beach on Dec. 12. There will be light refreshments served. This is a safe and supportive environment to provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are providing care to another. High school concerts

    ILWACO On Dec. 12 at 7 p.m., the high school jazz and symphonic bands will perform their winter concerts in the Hilltop Auditorium. On Dec. 13 at 7 p.m., the Epic Echo Show Choir will perform. Come hear and support these talented students. There is no admission charge.

ABCs of Diabetes

    ILWACO  On Dec. 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Ocean Beach Hospital meeting room, the public is encouraged to come hear a presentation entitled, The ABCs of Diabetes, presented by Steve Bellinger PA-C. Neptune Classic Movies

    LONG BEACH The Neptune Twin Cinemas offers family and classic movies with no charge for admission, subject to capacity. All family and classic shows begin at 1 p.m. The movie on Dec. 12 is The Straight Story starring Sissy Spacek, Richard Farnsworth. 1999. 112 min.

Bunco

    KLIPSAN  Peninsula Bunco Club hosts a game the second Thursday of each month starting at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan Beach. The next game is Dec. 13. The public is welcome. Jam sessions

Winter heating help

    PACIFIC COUNTY The low-income home energy assistance program is starting soon. Coastal Community Action Program will open phone lines Thursday, Dec. 13, and begin making appointments. Appointments can also be made online at www.coastalcap.org. The program provides financial assistance to help income eligible households make home heating more affordable. If you live in the Raymond/South Bend area, you can call 942-5739 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make an appointment. For all other areas please call 533-5100 or 800-828-4883 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to make an appointment.  Income guidelines apply.

Kite Festival posters

    LONG BEACH  The Washington State International Kite Festival is beginning the process to select the artwork for the 2013 Kite Festival poster.     ILWACO Ilwaco food bank will be open from 11 a.m. to       2 p.m., Dec. 14 and Dec. 21. The food bank is located on Lake Street, across from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum parking lot.

Clamming

    PENINSULA The next razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point this week. See story above for details.

Fan Club

    RAYMOND Raymond Timberland Library presents Harry Potter Fan Club from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Dec. 14 for youth in grades fourth through sixth and teens. Chinook fire open house & more

    CHINOOK  The Chinook Fire Department is hosting an open house on Dec. 15 form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition they are gathering food for the Chinook Food Bank. Fun fire truck rides will be offered to those who donate three cans of food per rider. Call 777-8881 if you have questions.

Bayside Singers Christmas Concert

    CHINOOK  The Bayside Singers, directed by Barbara Poulshock, will present a performance of its annual Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2:30 p.m., at the Fort Columbia Theatre in Chinook.  The concert, featuring traditional and contemporary holiday music, is jointly sponsored with the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA). Admission and parking for the event to be held in the Fort Columbia Theater near the entrance gate is free.  However, a cash donation collected at the door will be distributed to local Peninsulas organizations serving the needy.

Childrens Christmas party

    OCEAN PARK  The Women of the Moose are hosting their annual Childrens Christmas Party on Dec. 15, from 1 p.m. to         3 p.m., at the lodge in Ocean Park. All children from our Peninsula are welcome when attended by an adult. Santa and Mrs. Claus will listen to the childrens Christmas lists. There will be food, fun and all free.  Hope to see you there! Sunday, Dec. 16

Christmas trees for sale

    ILWACO Ilwaco High School Jazz Band is selling Christmas trees every Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the old high school. All are fresh cut nobles (cut Thanksgiving Day). The price is $30 for 4 ft. to 5 ft. trees; $40 for 5 ft. to 6 ft. trees; and $50 for trees 7 ft. to 8 ft. and up. This is a fundraiser for their trip in February to The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. For information call 642-3731 ext. 246.

Christmas Concert

    ASTORIA  Lower Columbia River Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) meets for dinner on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 5 p.m., at the Astoria Golf and Country Club. Active duty, retired, reserve and former commissioned and warrant officers of the seven uniformed services and their spouses are eligible to belong. Monday, Dec. 17

Shedore family donations

    PENINSULA Donations are still being accepted at any branch of the Bank of The Pacific. The Shedores have had major medical issues with Mike Shedore being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease), and their fishing boat, the Two Mikes, sinking off the Newport Jetty. Mikes condition has severely deteriorated requiring much more extensive treatment so any help would be welcomed.

Library friends

    ILWACO The Friends of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park Timberland Libraries will meet Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 4 p.m. All meetings will be held in the community building meeting room at the Ilwaco library. For more information call 642-3908.

OP library closed

    OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park Timberland Library will be closed for approximately three weeks. The library is expected to re-open to the public on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The outdoor book drop will stay open during the library closure. The project includes an addition to the back (south) side of the library expanding the interior space from 3,240 to 5,292 square feet. The highlights of the project will be new and larger quiet reading areas, a separate teen space, a larger childrens area, more computers, additional shelving, lighting for the shelving and new furnishings, carpet and paint.

 

Wednesday, Dec. 19

Wiegardt artwork raffle

    LONG BEACH  The Canoe, original artwork by Eric Wiegardt is being sold by raffle tickets, with the drawing to be held at    7 p.m., on Dec. 19 at the Long Beach fire hall. Tickets are $5 each, with only 1,000 total tickets available. The print is valued at $1,200 and is 22×30 in size. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit fireman Dave Unruh, who is going through a serious medical situation. Contact David Glasson to purchase tickets at 244-9041.

Chinook food bank

    CHINOOK The Friends of Chinook School is sponsoring the Chinook Food Bank in the Chinook School building at 810 State Route 101 in Chinook. The food bank will be open on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The next date they are open is Nov. 21. Call Loma at 777-8367 with questions.

Disaster relief truck

   ILWACO On Wednesday, Dec. 19, a disaster relief truck will come to the Green Dragonfly thrift store at 110 Lake Street in Ilwaco (the red shop building) between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. The truck will be there to pick up used and useful household item donations, which will be delivered to those areas affected by natural disasters.

    RAYMOND Raymond Timberland Library is hosting a winter movie marathon on Dec. 21 and Dec. 22 for all ages. When school is out for the holidays visit the library for a movie marathon. Old Time Loggers Reunion

    NASELLE  Appelo Archives Center at 1056 State Route 4 in Naselle, is pleased to sponsor the third annual Old Time Loggers Reunion on Saturday, Jan. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. This event is intended to bring together all who want to honor the logging industrys history in the Lower Columbia. Everyone who was, or still is, involved in the timber industry is encouraged to come. While there is no cost to attend, they always appreciate a donation to the center.

Mardi Gras coming
