Prep athletes keeping busy to start summer

Fishermen 35 strong for spring practices
ILWACO Since Memorial Day, 35 Ilwaco football hopefuls have been working out about an hour every day after school in what coach Kevin McNulty calls Very low- key workouts.
The Fishermen will host Naselle in a scrimmage game June 14 beginning at 5 p.m. at Peterson Field. The Fishermen already competed in a five team scrimmage in Castle Rock last Saturday.
Seniors playing for Ilwaco are Ben Lopez, Marcus Cox, Cody Wright and Mike Warner.
Juniors include Aaron Terry, Adam Hernandez, Tom Odneal, Keishi Thompson, Hunter Stockfleth, Eric McMillan, John Pampalos, Austin Woodby, Carlos Lopez, and Sebastian Garcia.
Sophomores playing are Matt MacDonald, Joe Lurf, Kienyn Adams, Keegan Benenati, Garret Petit and Tyler Landin. Freshmen include Riki Thompson, Josh Eagle Bear, Joe Lopez, Brandon Sparks, Zach Curtis, Jack Kaino, Jacob Malmstadt, Harrison Corsi, DeAntay Kellogg, Jared Jackson and James Schenk.
Six more Fishermen may turn out in the fall according to McNulty. Jarrod Karnofski is the trainer, Rod Anderson the statistical guru, and Sheryl Schisler is the cheerleader advisor.
Comets football squad preparing for June 14 scrimmage
NASELLE The defending Pacific 2B football champion Comets have been working hard this spring in preparation for a scrimmage at Ilwaco June 14 at 5 p.m. Naselle has 18 players out, including three freshmen.
Playing for the Comets are Dustin Eaton, Chandler Chapman, Brenden Greenfield, Jake Condon, Calvin Zimmerman, Levi Wasmundt, Sam Scrabeck and Nick Strange. Also working hard this spring are Skyler York, Cole Bergeson, Tony Lopez, Conner See, and Matt Carter. Also playing in the spring game will be Kyler Wulf, Justin Martinez, Jake Clark, Trevan Stanturf and Hayden Gudmundsen.
Lady Fishermen off to fast, furious start
ILWACO The Lady Fishermen basketball team is off to a productive and busy start this summer for coach Ned Bittner and assistant Cari Herbertson. Ilwaco defeated Tillamook and Astoria on June 2, but lost to host Seaside.
On June 3 they defeated Columbia of White Salmon in a tournament, but lost to host Napavine and to Pe Ell and again to Seaside. June 4 they defeated Naselle there, June 5 they knocked off Warrenton there, and June 6 downed Astoria at home as they fashioned a four-game win streak.
The Lady Fishermen will host the Battle at the Beach tournament June 15 through 17 at Ilwacos Hilltop and Carl Aase gyms. The junior varsity will open play at 3 p.m. and the varsity will play at 7 p.m. Pool play will continue through Saturday and bracket play begins Sunday at 9 a.m.
A total of 56 games will be played Friday through Sunday. Admission is free Friday and for children and the cost is $4 per day Saturday and Sunday.
Playing on the Lady Fishermen team are Cindy Pacheco, Amanda Bell, Victoria and Rachel Thrasher, Grace McPhail, Jackie Smith, Brittinee Olson, Alicia Trusty, McKenzie Dalton and Jasmine Coffin.
Also turning out for summer basketball for Ilwaco are Natalie Tapio, Valerie Lindstrom, Emily McMillan, Hannah Ellsworth, Michaela Aguayo, Darian Johnson, Abigail Bentley, Noelle Derrey, Lorna Cummings and Jennifer Navarre.
The turnout of 20 girls is the largest Bittner has had in any one summer since he began coaching girls basketball at IHS.
Comets hoops hopefuls have full schedule
NASELLE The Comets basketball team has started with four games against quality opponents, and although they have dropped contests to Astoria, Clatskanie, Onalaska and Adna, they are gaining valuable experience according to coach Brian Macy.
Playing for Naselle are Chandler Chapman, Nick Strange, Sam Scrabeck, Calvin Zimmerman, Levi Wasmundt, Jake Williams and Adrian Corona. Also working out for the Comets are Tony Lopez, Connor See, Skyler York, Cole Bergeson, Travis Pine, Kyler Wulff and Hayden Gudmundsen.
The Naselle contingent will attend a basketball team camp June 21 through 24 at Soap Lake and play about nine varsity and junior varsity contests. The Comets are also scheduled to play in a tournament in Warrenton on June 16.
June 18 the JVs will travel to Clatskanie and the varsity will play Toutle Lake and Mark Morris at Lower Columbia College June 19. The next day Naselle will play Clatskanie and Ilwaco at Carl Aase Gym.
June 25 Naselle will play Morton-White Pass at LCC and finish their summer season against Mossyrock June 26 at LCC. For complete information and updates go to the Comets boys basketball website www.cometbball.hoopsynergy.com/.
Fishermen to host tournament June 16, 17
ILWACO The Ilwaco boys basketball team has 10 players out for a competitive summer schedule. On June 4, the Fishermen lost to Seaside by four points and later lost a game to Warrenton by nine points.
The Fishermen were ahead of the Astoria Fishermen at half-time, but dropped a contest to them June 7, and the next day were soundly defeated by Wahkiakum according to coach Kip Meinhardt.
Ilwacos roster includes seniors Ross Kukula, Cody Wright, Jose Gonzalez and Clark Wilson. Eric McMillan is the only junior, while sophomores include Tyler Milligan, Kienyn Adams, Brenden Weidner (broken hand), Taylor Schisler and Kenny Sheldon.
Ilwaco will host a tournament June 16 and 17. The opening game for the Fishermen will be at 10 a.m. Saturday against Gaston, Ore. Ilwaco then plays Knappa, Ore., at noon and completes play Sunday against Seaside at 10 a.m. and Hood River at 2 p.m.
The Fishermen will finish out their summer schedule by hosting Warrenton at 3:30 p.m. and Astoria at 5:30 p.m. on June 18, and then hosting Naselle on June 20 at 3:30 p.m., and Clatskanie at 5:30 p.m., at Carl Aase Gym in Ilwaco.
Comets girls basketball to Battle at Beach, camp at Ocean Shores
NASELLE The Comets girls basketball team has played strong opponents from Astoria, Ilwaco, and Knappa and the Naselle squad is gaining valuable experience.
Making up the contingent of varsity and junior varsity players for the Comets are Makenzie Matthews, Vicki Corona, Ciara Sandell, Kirsten Scrabeck, Katie Green, Kayti Nelson, Breanna Smith, Madison Green, Abbie Eaton, Haley Pine, Abbey DaVall, Kendra Leeland, Hailey Footh and Makayla Matthews.
Naselle is tentatively scheduled to play at 5 p.m., June 15 in the Battle at the Beach Tournament in Ilwaco. The tournament continues through Sunday, June 17. The Comets girls will then travel to Ocean Shores June 19 through 22 for the BnB Team Camp to conclude the summer portion of their hoops year.
