Memorial poppies
PENINSULA Members of the Don R. Grable American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 48 in Ilwaco will be offering memorial poppies on the Peninsula from June 27 to July 7. The poppy is a symbol honoring all veterans, especially those whose lives or health were sacrificed for Americas freedom during wars. Donations are used only to help veterans and their families. Donations of money, baked goods (near the sale date), books, CDs and DVDs are needed. Water Follies musical
SKAMOKAWA Skamokawa Grange No. 425 is presenting its fifth annual musical production, Smoky Water Follies at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, in the restored Grange hall located at 18 Fairgrounds Road in Skamokawa, located 30 miles west of Longview and 45 miles east of Long Beach. The rollicking vaudeville show, set in the early 1900s, will feature comedians, singers, male and female barbershop quartets, musicians, dancers and more. All individual tickets are $10, but new this year, is a one-night only, family ticket on Friday night for just $20. Tickets are available at the Bank of the Pacific in Naselle and Cathlamet; Moore Auto Parts, The Video Store and Sharons Pizza and More in Cathlamet, the Skamokawa Resorts general store and from various cast members. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, although seating is limited. This is a fundraiser that will benefit the ongoing maintenance and restoration of the historic Skamokawa Grange Hall. Beach cleanup talk
KLIPSAN On June 29, there will be a potluck at 5 p.m., with a speaker following at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in support of the upcoming community beach cleanup set for July 5. The event is open to all. There is no cost, but attendees are asked to bring a dish to serve seven to 10 people. (Come early to pick up cleanup supplies.) The speaker will be Brian Atwater from the U.S. Geological Survey in Seattle. Lessons for Washington residents and visitors can be found in eyewitness accounts of the survivors of the Japan and Indonesia tsunamis.

Art around town
PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association members are showing artwork at the Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. There are paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylics, as well as collage, pastels and photography. All artwork is framed, signed and most are for sale. At the Ilwaco library, pastels by Joyce Wingett and photography by Nancy Meyrick are on display also with most for sale. There are a wide variety of subjects at both venues that everyone will enjoy.

Open Trail Challenge
MENLO The Pacific County 4H Horse leader volunteers are hosting an open to the public trail challenge and gaming playday on Saturday, June 30 with registration starting at 7 a.m. and on Sunday, July 1 at 9 a.m., in the horse barn. Bring your horse no stallions allowed! The events will be held in the area at the Menlo Fairgrounds. The public is invited to attend with or without a horse. The 4H horse leaders will have the only food booth at the event. This event is a fundraiser for the 4H horse program. There will be different types of vendors including crafts, western art, a horse tack sale, Native American arts and crafts and more. Saturday night there will be a bonfire and marshmallow roast. Car cruise
LONG BEACH Members of the Beach Barons Car Club are planning to cruise to the Clatskanie Car Show on June 30. Trek across Tokeland
TOKELAND The second annual Trek Across Tokeland will be Sunday, July 1. Registration takes place at the Tradewinds on the Bay from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The $5 registration includes a sack lunch, a coupon for a Nelson Crab shrimp cocktail, and one ticket for a drawing to win a walking stick. Trek the beach, stroll through the woods, meander the golf course. If you are more adventurous, bring your hiking boots and sign up for the 2 p.m., four-mile hike. Purchase a T-shirt. This year there will be short sleeved as well as long sleeved shirts. All proceeds will go to the continuing effort to get a permanent trail system in Tokeland. CERT training
LONG BEACH The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is hosting a 10-week training course for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This free training runs every Tuesday through Aug. 25, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pacific County Administration Building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants are not required to attend all courses, though complete attendance is required to graduate from the program. Courses include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster triage, disaster medical, victim search, rescue organizations, team organization, disaster psychology and animal rescue. OCEAN PARK To celebrate the Independence Day holiday, the Peninsula serves up fun with many family-friendly activities including the Funtastic grand parade on Wednesday, July 4 at 1 p.m. in Ocean Park. See the many floats, pets, marching bands, fire engines, horses and much more from a front row seat along the downtown streets. Kids and adults alike enjoy this down-home style main street parade.
Fireworks show
LONG BEACH On July 4, starting at dusk (9:30 p.m. or so) fireworks will be set off in front of the boardwalk between Sid Snyder Drive and Bolstad Avenue in Long Beach. Plus you can enjoy the hours of spectacular before and after show fireworks that can be seen up and down the length of our 28 miles of beach. This is one of those has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed events. Watch the fireworks show from one of the oceanfront hotels, sitting on the beach in your beach chairs or even in your vehicle or sitting anywhere in the downtown area near the beach. With plenty of areas to view the fireworks, there is always room to see the spectacular show!
Bake sale
OCEAN PARK The Women of the Moose are holding their famous Fourth of July bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 4. Goodies galore will be available at the Ocean Park Food Bank on Bay Avenue, east of the Berry Patch Restaurant. Watch the parade, then treat yourself to something delicious, and help feed the needy. All proceeds go to the Ocean Park Food Bank.

Starving Artists Sale
KLIPSAN Peninsula Arts Association is having their annual Starving Artists Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 7 at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center at 21603 O Lane in Klipsan. This venue consists of artists cleaning out their studios. Nothing is priced at more than $50, many are priced less than that. Proceeds go to benefit the scholarship fund. Feel the Thunder
ILWACO On Saturday, July 7, starting at dusk, you dont want to miss the Feel The Thunder fireworks show at the Port of Ilwaco. Bring your chairs and sit comfortably overlooking the docks to watch the beautiful display without ever getting sand in your shoes. Ample parking and a beautiful water setting make this event a must-see also. Vendors are also open along the docks offering food and more before, during and after the fireworks display.
Northwest Life
SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall will be starting their summer season with an exhibit of work by four members of the Lower Columbian Artists Association. The exhibit of paintings by these four is titled Art from a Northwest Life featuring these artists visions of our beautiful Pacific Northwest. They are Mitzi Christensen, Alan Brunk, Nancy Knowles and Ramona Lauzon all well known artists in this area. They are a lovely introduction to the season when we all start to look anew at the beauty around us and we are proud to have such excellent guides to our summer awakening. The exhibit runs from July 7 through Aug. 12 and there will be a reception for the artists on Sunday, July 8 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The hall is open Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Redmen Hall is located in beautiful downtown Skamokawa at 1394 SR-4. Tennis camp
LONG BEACH There are four camp sessions this summer set for youth ages 7 through 18, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The first session runs July 9 through July 13; the second session is July 16 through July 19, the third session is July 24 through July 26 and the fourth session is July 30 through Aug. 3. These classes have a nominal fee and are designed to work on hand-eye coordination and basic fundamentals and techniques while learning self-control, enjoying healthy competition and making new friends in a fun setting. Players are required to wear non-marking court shoe and tennis-type clothing. Little racquets are available to use during the classes. Kids can sign up for one or all four sessions. Managing chronic illnesses
ILWACO Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. This series of classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., starting July 12 and running through Aug. 16. Space is limited. Transits Quarterly Board Meeting
LONG BEACH The Pacific Transit Authority Board will hold its regular quarterly meeting at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 12. The meeting will be held at the Pacific County Office Buildings meeting room at 7013 Sandridge Road, in Long Beach. Two public hearings will be on the agenda: one on the 7-Year Transportation Development Plan & 2011 Annual Report; the other to amend the 2012 Capital Budget. KLIPSAN The public is invited to meet the county commissioner candidates at an open forum on July 12, at 7 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center, located at 21603 Pacific Highway in Klipsan. Clamshell Railroad Days
LONG BEACH Celebrate the history of the only railroad that ran with the tides at the Clamshell Railroad Days on Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days. The cost for admission is only $5 per person and includes a free souvenir pin plus museum entrance for two days. Children under 12 are admitted free. Local historian Harry Bell will give a slide presentation beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. The theme is the Ilwaco Rail and Navigation Company, which served the Long Beach Peninsula from 1889 to 1930. Bus tours of the old rail lines are offered each day. Historian Bell along with Nancy Gorshe of the Depot will host these bus tours. On Saturday, the tour will cover Ilwaco to Nahcotta from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday will cover Nahcotta to Megler from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The bus tours cost $5 per person and reservations are required. Kids will have plenty of fun with an expanded Lego train plus the Kids Craft Caboose at the Museum. The Pullman Passenger car Nahcotta will also delight young and old. Model railroad clubs from Oregon and Washington are participating with the return of the Portland Cascade Z-Scale and their fantastic diorama. The Mount Rainer N-Scale Club wowed last years visitors with their 34 foot long exhibit and will be returning with new additions this year. For more information call 642-3446.
Music In The Gardens
LONG BEACH Enjoy the lovely gardens of the Long Beach Peninsula during the upcoming Music In The Gardens event to be held Saturday, July 21. The self-guided tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tickets available for $15 per person. Treat yourself to a visual feast as you walk among the beautiful gardens. While you stroll through the gardens, listen to live music performed by local musicians. Some gardens will have recorded music playing of artists to be featured at this years Jazz and Oysters event in August and the Water Music Festival in October. Available one week in advance and the day of the event, you can find tickets at the following locations: Basketcase Greenhouse, 12106 Sandridge Road, Long Beach; The English Nursery at the corner of Hwy 101 and Hwy 103 in Seaview; and Adelaides at 1401 Bay Avenue in Ocean Park. Ilwaco Tuna Classic
ILWACO Two full days of fishing will be enjoyed during the annual Ilwaco Tuna Classic. Bigger and better than ever this year, the fishing will be held on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28, with more festivities on Sunday, July 29 at the Port of Ilwaco. The Ilwaco Tuna Classic fishing begins on Friday and continues through Saturday. Sunday will feature a wrap-up event with official weigh-in, vendor booths, huge barbecue, raffle, auction and final results announced. There will also be a scavenger hunt on Saturday for those not fishing, so bring your family. You are invited to join the cause by participating in the Ilwaco Tuna Classic and registration ends July 22. Register today to secure your spot. Race Against Violence
LONG BEACH The third annual Race Against Violence is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. Created as way to honor Lisa Bonney, the 5K run/walk is held to raise domestic awareness and raise funds for domestic violence support, resources and prevention education materials. Entry fees are $22 to receive an event T-shirt ($27 after the July 22 deadline), and $12 without the T-shirt ($17 after July 22). Participants can register online at www.dvawareness.org/race, or in person at the Long beach Train Depot (at 3rd and Pacific North in Long Beach) on Friday, Aug. 3 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the morning of the race from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The walk portion is non-competitive; trophies will be awarded to the top four male and female runners. Soccer workshop
OCEAN PARK Youth ages 4 through 12 are invited to learn the basics of futbol at a workshop hosted by New York youth soccer coach Sashamani Francois. From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Sunday, Aug. 12, Francois will teach new futbol techniques at Ocean Park Elementary. The fee to participate is $25 per day or $40 for both days.
