Blood drive

    ILWACO  American Legion Don R. Grable Post 48 and the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 13 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. Any healthy person age 18 or older and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood. Valid identification is required for all blood donations. Archery meeting

    LONG BEACH  Bear River Archers meet at 7:30 p.m., at the Bear River Archery range located at 85th and Sandridge, next to Lone Fir Cemetery. On the agenda will be election of officers. All comers track & field

    ILWACO  The popular all-comers track and field program is again happening June 13 and June 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Peterson Field in Ilwaco. The meets, which ask for a $2 donation to made to Ilwaco Sports Boosters Club to benefit IHS track programs, have a variety of events and age groups for all competitors. The long jump, shot put, discus, softball throw, plus running events such as the 100-, 200-, 400-, and 1,600-meter runs and the 2×200 family relay are among the events athletes will compete in. Competitors will be broken into a variety of age groups for competitions. Pre-registration is not necessary, just show up for the fun meets. Flag Ceremony/Disposal of Worn Flags

    LONG BEACH At 4 p.m. on Flag Day, Thursday, June 14, behind the Elks Lodge, next to the post office at Washington and 2nd North in Long Beach, members of the American Legion Post #48, the Elks (B.P.O.E. 1937), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will observe Flag Day. There will be a short program honoring the flag and American Legion members and a Coast Guard Honor Guard will perform the ceremony for the disposal of unserviceable flags. Any members of the public who have worn and faded flags that should be retired with respect may bring their flags to the ceremony or take them to the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, any fire station or to the Long Beach City Hall before June 13. Public input on parks

    CHINOOK Should the State Parks system operate more like an enterprise-based hospitality industry, a public conservation asset based mostly on grant and tax funding, or perhaps a system of parks freely standing as community non-profit entities? What do people love about their park system, and what improvements need to be made? A meeting is scheduled in Chinook on June 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Fort Columbia State Park Theater, 475 Highway 101 to discuss these topics and others. Ideas are being sought through email and in meetings with legislators, stakeholders and in public meetings.

Garage sale

Silent Auction

    NASELLE  The Friends of the Naselle Library are holding their second annual silent auction from June 14 through June 26. Items will be on display at the Naselle Timberland Library on Parpala Road during regular library hours. The auction will end with a community picnic on the Tuesday, June 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Winners will be announced at the picnic. Items for auction include handmade baby quilts, horse riding lesson, a custom made sterling sliver messy nest pendant, local organic strawberries, a party with Thistle Down at the Magic Tree House, a handmade fused glass dish, baked goods, watercolor painting, along with many more donations from local businesses and local artisans. Bunco

    KLIPSAN  Peninsula Bunco Club hosts a game the second Thursday of each month starting at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan Beach. The next game is June 14. The public is welcome. Line dancing

        LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners is from        5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; intermediate and advanced dancers hit the floor from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and couples dance beginning at 7 p.m., each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month.     ILWACO Thanks to the generous support of the Port of Ilwaco, you can visit the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco on Thursdays free of charge. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Bring the family and come see what treasures our local museum has to offer.

Toastmasters

    LONG BEACH Columbia Pacific Farmers Market is open from       3 p.m. to 6 p.m., every Friday in downtown Long Beach. Art around town

    PENINSULA During the next two months, Peninsula Arts Association members are showing artwork at the Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco.  There are paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylics, as well as collage, pastels and photography. All artwork is framed, signed and most are for sale. At the Ilwaco library, pastels by Joyce Wingett and photography by Nancy Meyrick are on display with most for sale also. There are a wide variety of subjects at both venues that everyone will enjoy.

Garlic Festival

    OCEAN PARK The 2012 Garlic Festival runs June 16 and June 17, and is located at Wilson Field, just two blocks south of Bay Avenue on Sandridge Road in Ocean Park. In order to participate in the annual festival, vendors and artisans are required to sell items inspired by garlic and are urged to keep the festival motto in mind, Its Chic to Reek. Because the festival limits the number of booths carrying similar merchandise, it is best to register early to guarantee a spot. Doggie Olympics

    LONG BEACH  The next Doggie Olympics is set for Saturday, June 16 at the Bolstad beach approach in Long Beach. Not just for purebred dogs, the Doggie Olympics is for all dogs including those of questionable  parentage, and will include a variety of fun events such as the Rip Van Winkle sleep off, dunking for dogs, peanut butter lick, doggie dash and many more. Summerfest

    ILWACO  Auditions for Rumpelstiltskin, a world premier musical theater, will be held Sunday, June 17, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the River City Playhouse, 127 Lake Street in Ilwaco. Whooping cough vaccine

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach branch of the Pacific County Public Health and Human Services Department is offering the Pertusisis, also known as whooping cough, vaccination at one remaining clinic, to be held on Monday, June 18 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the county building located at 7013 Sandridge Road, Long Beach. Times are by appointment so if you are interested, call 642-9349 and press 2 to reach the secretary.  This clinic is for those 19 and older. If you have children under the age of 19 please contact your healthcare provider to check on whether they need a vaccination. The health department has a limited number of vaccines supplied by the state that is free to you if you are uninsured or your insurance does not cover the vaccine. Also available is privately purchased vaccine that is $35 for the vaccine and $33 for the office visit. There is a sliding fee for the office visit based on your income. CERT training

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is hosting a 10-week training course for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This free training begins June 19 and runs every Tuesday through Aug. 25, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pacific County Administration Building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants are not required to attend all courses, though complete attendance is required to graduate from the program. Courses include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster triage, disaster medical, victim search, rescue organizations, team organization, disaster psychology and animal rescue.     KLIPSAN The community is invited to the memorial dedication being held in the park at Golden Sands Assisted Living Center on June 20, at      3:30 p.m. The flag pole dedication will be in memory of Lester F. Smith, and the engraved brick path will reflect and commemorate various families, businesses and loved ones. There will be light refreshments afterward in the lobby.

The Bee Social

Beach To Chowder Walk/Run

    LONG BEACH  Walk or run a 5K or run a 10K at the Beach To Chowder Walk/Run in Long Beach on Saturday, June 23. After working up your appetite with the walk or run of your choice, get ready to have delicious clam chowder. Pre-register in person the day before from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. or register on the day of the race from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., at the Train Depot building located at 3rd and NW Pacific Highway in Long Beach. The 5K walk is non-competitive. Strollers and spectators are welcome on the 5K run/walk. Dogs are also welcome, but must be leashed and under control at all times. For the 10K run, runners will compete in one of nine age-group divisions. Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers in all race divisions. Jazz & Show tunes

    FORT COLUMBIA To celebrate the opening of its new home at the Fort Columbia Theater, Peninsula Association of Performing Arts (PAPA) is presenting a Jazz and Show Tunes concert on Sunday, June 24, at 3 p.m. The concert features Tom Trudell at the piano, and Brooke Flood singing many jazz favorites and memorable Broadway show tunes.  The concert will be a nostalgic look back in time for all in attendance. Light refreshments will be available at intermission. Tickets will be $7 (with children under 15 years old free). A sophisticated new lighting system and new high-tech equipment for the sound system will add to the enjoyment. PAPA is pleased to announce an agreement with the Washington State Parks Department to have an official home for all their events. As part of this long-term agreement, PAPA will compensate the Parks Department for each adult ticket sold, and the Parks Department will forgive the requirement for those attending PAPA events to have a Discover Pass.

NPIA Meeting

    OCEAN PARK The North Peninsula Improvement Association is holding its annual meeting beginning at 7 p.m., June 26 at the Ocean Park fire hall. The purpose of this meeting is to elect a board of directors and officers. Members must have their annual dues of $10 paid up to date in order to vote. Membership is open to owners of property located north of Cranberry Road. NPI A has initiated community improvements and projects including include flood control, junk car removal, illegally stored RVs and trailer removal, the North Beach Water District and the Beach To Bay Trail. Trek across Tokeland

    TOKELAND  The second annual trek across Tokeland will be Sunday, July 1.  Registration takes place at the Tradewinds on the Bay starting at 9 a.m. The $5 registration includes a sack lunch. Trek the beach, stroll through the woods, meander the golf course and maybe even more. Purchase a short or long-sleeve T-shirt with the design by Katelyn Chudecke.

Starving Artists Sale

    KLIPSAN The Peninsula Arts Association is having their annual Starving Artists Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 7 at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center at 21603 O Lane in Klipsan. This venue consists of artists cleaning out their studios. Nothing is priced at more than $50, many are priced less than that. Proceeds go to benefit the scholarship fund. Commissioner candidate forum

    KLIPSAN  The public is invited to meet the county commissioner candidates at an open forum on July 12, at 7 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center, located at 21603 Pacific Highway in Klipsan. The Willapacific Chapter of the AAUW, American Association of University Women, will host the issues forum. Candidates for commissioner position one are Warren Cowell, Bill Herman, Scott McDougall and Steve Rogers. The candidates for commissioner position two are Fred Hill, Richard Makowski, Bryan West and Frank Wolfe. All of the candidates will be available for questions regarding the issues during and after the forum. Attention women and girls

    LONG BEACH Come to the Long Beach Grange, located at 5715 Sandridge Road, the second Sunday of each month now through December at 1 p.m., and bring your talents in arts, crafts, poetry, photography, cooking, canning, crocheting, sewing and any other craft/hobby you are interested in.  Come with a desire to chat, teach and learn from each other. Refreshments will be available. (Grange membership is not required). The grange is a voluntary organization that is dedicated to helping build a better community through teaching, sharing and serving.

Fourth of July parade

    OCEAN PARK  To celebrate the Independence Day holiday, the Peninsula serves up fun with many family-friendly activities including the Funtastic grand parade on Wednesday, July 4 at noon in Ocean Park. See the many floats, pets, marching bands, fire engines, horses and much more from a front row seat along the downtown streets. Kids and adults alike enjoy this down-home style main street parade.

Fireworks show

    LONG BEACH On July 4, starting at dusk (9:30 p.m. or so) fireworks will be set off in front of the boardwalk between Sid Snyder Boulevard and Bolstad Avenue in Long Beach. Plus you can enjoy the hours of spectacular before and after show fireworks that can be seen up and down the length of our 28 miles of beach. This is one of those has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed events. Watch the fireworks show from one of the oceanfront hotels, sitting on the beach in your beach chairs or even in your vehicle or sitting anywhere in the downtown area near the beach. With plenty of areas to view the fireworks, there is always room to see the spectacular show!

Feel the Thunder

    ILWACO On Saturday, July 7, starting at dusk, you dont want to miss the Feel The Thunder fireworks show at the Port of Ilwaco. Bring your chairs and sit comfortably overlooking the picturesque docks to watch the beautiful display without ever getting sand in your shoes. Ample parking and a beautiful water setting make this event a must-see also. Vendors are also open along the docks offering food and more before, during and after the fireworks display.  

Soccer workshop

    OCEAN PARK Youth ages 4 through 12 are invited to learn the basics of futbol at a workshop hosted by New York youth soccer coach Sashamani Francois. From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Sunday, Aug. 12, Francois will teach new futbol techniques at Ocean Park Elementary. The fee to participate is $25 per day or $40 for both days. Managing chronic illnesses

    ILWACO Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. this series of classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., starting July 12 and running through Aug. 16.
