Naselle Library closed

    NASELLE The Naselle Timberland Library will be closed Wednesday, May 16 for staff training. The library will resume its regular schedule Friday, May 18. The Ocean Park, Raymond and South Bend Timberland libraries will be open as usual.

Bag it

Folk art exhibit

    ILWACO A folk art exhibition, organized by the Washington State Historical Societys Traveling Exhibition Service, which includes 14 informative panels on the folk artists of Washington state, will be on display at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco from May 18 through July 29. This particular program focuses on traditional folk arts as expressed in handmade objects as well as in performance arts such as music, song, dance, and storytelling. Our region is represented by Wilho Saari of Naselle. Saari is a kantele player in the tradition of his Finnish ancestors who has a wide knowledge of the history of the kantele, as well as a sincere commitment to many other aspects of Finnish folklore. The kantele generally has from 15 to 40 metal strings and produces a harp or bell like sound. He will present a concert during the exhibition opening on Friday, May 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Pinochle

    ILWACO Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco is open every Saturday, rain or shine, all summer long from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down and shop for farm fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, plants, flowers and all manner of seafood, or just enjoy a stroll along the waterfront in Ilwaco.

Shred-A-Thon

    LONG BEACH Arthur Strand Insurance, along with Liberty Northwest and Safeco Insurance companies are sponsoring a shread-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 19 in the parking lot behind Strand Insurance and the Chinook Observer office at 205 Bolstad Avenue East in Long Beach. Come shred documents, such as old tax documents, bank statements, cancelled checks, credit card documents, financial statements, old business records and more all free of charge. There is no need to remove paper clips or staples, but binder clips must be taken off, and no plastic can be included please ensure you bring paper documents only. Surf perch derby

    LONG BEACH The 12th annual surf perch derby is set for Saturday, May 19 at the Bolstad approach. The registration booth is open from       5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Pre-registration is $30 per person (or $35 on the day of the tournament) and includes the Kiwanis Club breakfast. Weigh-in can be done from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m., with prize money awarded. The all you can eat pancakes will be served from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., and includes pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, cranberry juice, coffee and milk. Family Fair

    RAYMOND  Are you a parent or guardian with young family? Come to the Family Fair May 19 in the Raymond High School gym and get connected to resources found within North Pacific County to ensure your child enters school ready for success. The Family Fair runs from 10 a.m. to         2 p.m., and includes hands on activities for young children and resources for their families. Lunch will be provided. Your child will experience art, gardening, music and active play. Take home a book. Enjoy a performance by the Chinook and Shoalwater singer and dancers, The Matt Baker Comedy Stunt Show at noon, and childrens music performer Nancy Stewart, who will be kick off Know & Grows family concert series at 2:30 p.m., at the Raymond Theater. The Know and Grow Early Learning Coalition is the creator of the Family Fair. The coalition promotes early learning and healthy child development in North Pacific County by connecting families and caregivers with community resources.

Spring planting

    SURFSIDE  Surfside Homeowners Association is sponsoring a spring planting event (rain or shine) on Saturday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m., at the west side of the 306th Bridge by Memorial Park on I Street. Just follow the Surfside Event signs. Rachel Gana is scheduled as featured master gardener. Admission is free with door prizes, giveaways, and a $1-a-ticket raffle. Bayside Singers concert

    OCEAN PARK & CHINOOK At 3 p.m., on Saturday, May 19 at Ocean Park Lutheran Church on U Street, and Sunday, May 20, at the newly restored Chinook Gym Theater, dont miss the Bayside Singers concert. Directed by Barbara Poulshock, this spring concert will include several compositions and arrangements by her, and even a piece composed especially for this group. Mental Health Walk

    LONG BEACH  The annual Mental Health and Wellness Walk begins at 9 a.m., on Saturday, May 19 at the Bolstad approach in Long Beach. Walking along the Discovery Trail, youth and adults of all ages will walk in support of local education and outreach as part of Mental Health Awareness Month. Participating teams and individuals include NAMI Pacific County, the Ilwaco Youth Empowerment Squad [YES], and Willapa Behavioral Health staff. North Head L/H anniversary

    ILWACO  The public is invited to attend the 114th anniversary of the North Head Lighthouse at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco set for Saturday, May 19. Self-guided tours of the Lighthouse Keepers Residence, memories shared by those who lived at or cared for the lighthouse, live music by the Ilwaco High School Jazz Band, and refreshments will be available. There will be raffles and prizes, with the ticket proceeds going to support The Keepers of the North Head Lighthouse mission to restore and preserve the North Head Lighthouse. You can also tour the North Head Lighthouse and lantern room from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the anniversary celebration. Tours are $2.50 for adults and free for children 7 to 17. Children must be 7 years or older to tour the lighthouse. Parking is limited at the North Head Lighthouse. Participants may park at the Cape Disappointment State Park campground store lot and take the transport van to the lighthouse. The Discover Pass is required to attend this event.

Beach Baron Cruise

    LONG BEACH  On Saturday, May 19, the Beach Baron Car Club will be cruising to Cannon Beach to Mos Restaurant for lunch. They will leave Pioneer Market at 11 a.m. and plan to arrive at Mos around 12:30 p.m. The public is welcome to come participate. For more information call 665-3565.

There is a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, and big raffle tickets available. This event is sponsored by the South Pacific County Humane Society and Peninsula Golf.

Otterson feed, auction & more

    CHINOOK  On Sunday, May 20 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the public is invited to the Chinook Restaurant and Lounge for a spaghetti feed, silent auction and more to raise money for Joyce Warner/Otterson, who has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Musical gems

    RAYMOND Willapa Harbor Chorale will present an evening of musical gems at their annual spring concert on Sunday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at the historic Raymond Theater.  These gems include show tunes, a bit of jazz and some traditional spirituals. The choir is directed by Rick Gauger, with Beth Ginther as accompanist.  Soloists include Dean Bryan, Randy Carlson, Brenda Hayward, Laurie May, Jim McGinnis and Linda Snodgras. Flower baskets

    PENINSULA The Ilwaco High School class of 2012 continues to sell flower bowls and baskets. Prices for hanging baskets are $28 each or two or more $25 each; 14-inch flower bowls are $20 each or $18 for two or more bowls. All proceeds benefit the Class of 2012 Substance Free Graduation Party. Bowls contain alyssum, dianthus, dusty miller, geranium, lobelia, marigold, pansy, petunia, salvia, snapdragon, verbena and viola. Baskets are filled with Bacopa (Creeping Charlie), Nemesaia, Sanvatalia, Calibrachoa, geranium, New Guinea Impatiens, Fuchsia, Verbena and Petunia. Plants will be available for pick up mid-May. In Their Footsteps

    FORT CLATSOP Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort   Clatsop is pleased to announce   the   next   installment   of   its In Their Footsteps free speakers series. The   program   is Astoria: History in Images by Jeffrey Smith on Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. in the Netul River Room of the Fort Clatsop visitor center. Drawing on the more than 23,000 photographs in the Columbia River Maritime Museum archives, Jeffrey Smith has compiled the recent book Astoria, part of the Images of America series by Arcadia Publications. He will share some of the images that, for a variety of reasons, were left out of this book and the stories that go along with these historic photos of Astoria. The book, Astoria is available for purchase at the Lewis & Clark National Park Association bookstore in the visitor center. Smith will have a book signing following his presentation. Town hall meeting

    SOUTH BEND Willapa Alliance for Youth (WAY), in conjunction with Teen Advocacy Coalition and Washington State Family Policy Council, will hold their first annual town hall meeting on Tuesday, May 22, at the Willapa Harbor Chamber of Commerce. At 6 p.m., the keynote speaker, Debbie Elmore, program director of the Mediation and Settlement Center for Grays Harbor and Pacific counties, will speak on creating and fostering healthy relationships with children and teens. Food bank openings

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Food Bank has a few volunteer openings.  Volunteers are needed to help on the first Wednesday of each month to move cases of food around following monthly deliveries. Chair yoga

    NASELLE  On May 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., adults are invited to Naselle Timberland Library for chair yoga with Terrie Powers, certified yoga teacher, and Lakshmi Voelker, a certified chair yoga teacher. Enjoy an evening of Hatha Yoga, combining yoga exercises (asanas) to tone, strengthen and align the body with breathing techniques (pranayama) to quiet the mind. Chair yoga adapts traditional yoga poses for sitting, so anyone can do it regardless of age or physical condition. Wear comfortable clothing and come with an empty stomach. Blood Drive

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics is teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive at the hospital located at 174 First Avenue North in Ilwaco, on Thursday, May 24, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Blood products are routinely transfused to those with cancer and other diseases, organ transplant recipients, premature babies, and accident and trauma victims.  One donation can help save up to three lives, according to the Red Cross. Library book sale

    OCEAN PARK  The Friends of The Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries used book sale will be held May 25, May 26 and May 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ocean Park Timberland Library.  Some books are marked specially; all others are $1 per hardbound and trade paper and $.50 for regular size paper. All proceeds are for the benefit of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park libraries.

Humane Society Grrrage Sale

    LONG BEACH The South Pacific County Humane Society is holding their annual garage sale on Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at l6l5 Pacific Avenue N, in Long Beach. Memorial Day

    PENINSULA On Monday, May 28, the American Legion and Auxiliary Don R. Grable Post and Unit No. 48, the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will observe Memorial Day.  Observances will begin with raisings of the American Flag at Oysterville Cemetery at       8:45 a.m., Ocean Park Cemetery at 9:15 a.m. and Lone Fir Cemetery at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., the main program at the Ilwaco Cemetery will be held, followed by a program at the Black Lake Memorial in Ilwaco. Following that program, attendees are invited to enjoy lunch and a speaker at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Commercial fishermen course

Meals on Wheels fundraiser

    RAYMOND A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held Friday, June 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at 324 Jackson Street in Raymond. The dinner will benefit Pacific County Senior Center and Meals on Wheels Program. Dinner is $5 a plate and includes spaghetti with Monicas special sauce, green salad with Italian dressing, garlic French bread, ultimate chocolate cake and a beverage. Dollars for Scholars

    SKAMOKAWA Mark your calendars for June 2 for the 12th annual Derby Dollars for Scholars scholarship barbeque and sturgeon derby at the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The 7th annual Rods and Reels Car Show will also be happening at the Skamokawa Grange Hall and the fairgrounds park. Barbequed salmon and chicken with potato salad and rolls will be served for lunch from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. You can come for lunch and enjoy the festivities as well as admire the cars at the Rods and Reels car show without entering the derby. The fishing derby will have raffle tables where you can win merchandise such as a BBQ, picnic table, camping gear, a pontoon boat and more. Raffle tables for the car show include numerous fun items too. The lucky ticket holder for each of these drawings will take home the goods! Remember the more you enter the better your odds. Garlic Festival seeks local vendors

    OCEAN PARK The Northwest Garlic Festival is looking to shake things up a bit. Known over the years for everything garlic, (including ice cream), the festival planners are working to increase another aspect of the event local seafood cuisine and hand crafted merchandise. The 2012 Garlic Festival runs June 16 and June 17, and is located at Wilson Field, just two blocks south of Bay Avenue on Sandridge Road in Ocean Park.  Vendors and artisans may register for a booth through the OPACCs website, www.opwa.com, or by stopping in at the Chamber office Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., (1715 Bay Avenue, Ocean Park). A 10 x 10 site costs $100 for the two-day, outdoor event.  Sites with electricity run $125. There are discounts for multiple spaces and the deadline to register and pay is May 23, or until all spaces are filled. In order to participate in the annual festival, vendors and artisans are required to sell items inspired by garlic and are urged to keep the festival motto in mind, Its Chic to Reek. Because the festival limits the number of booths carrying similar merchandise, it is best to register early to guarantee a spot. Call For Art, Garlic Poster Contest

    OCEAN PARK  Peninsula Arts Association announces the opening of this years Northwest Garlic Festival Poster Contest. This is the third year PAA has run the poster contest for the Ocean Park Area Chamber event. The 31st NW Garlic Festival Poster will be a limited, signed edition of 100, packaged in a protective clear bag with a backing board and certificate of authenticity. The contest is open to the public with a cash prize of $150 (and two posters) awarded to the winning artist. Entry forms are available on PAAs website www.beachartist.org, or may be picked up at the OPA Chamber Office (1715 Bay Ave, Ocean Park), Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 pm. The deadline for entries is May 15. The winning artist must be available to sign printed posters before a June 8 reception for the poster reveal. This reception, held at Lighthouse Realty in Ocean Park, will be the first time collectors may purchase the hard to get, low numbered editions.  Complete contest information is available on PAAs website or by calling 665-6041.
