There have been ongoing cutbacks at the Naselle library. This is a portion of an email I sent to the Timberland Regional Library Board of Trustees.

“I am disappointed at several recent changes made to the Naselle library. The removal of a majority of the books, magazines and DVDs on display takes away from the ‘browsing’ experience that is such an important part of a library visit. The lack of displayed material cheapens the look of the library, as if it is running low on stock.
“I am discouraged that a replacement for a full-time librarian who recently retired will not be made. An experienced librarian can quickly and personally provide information and services to customers so they can take full advantage of what the library has to offer. Self-serve technology and on-line resources are not a substitute for a qualified staff.”
These changes don’t seem to be necessary cost-cutting measures that affect all branches. The library’s website features this glowing description of a new location for an existing branch:

“Envisioned as a modern, dynamic space, the proposed library building is poised to become a vital center for collaboration, education, and cultural engagement. With a design that seamlessly integrates into the scenic beauty of our surroundings, the new Mountain View location promises a unique and inspiring environment.”
The Naselle library is an important part of our small community. It deserves the same treatment as this upgraded branch. The board can be reached at TRLBoardofTrustees@trl.org.
