IMS Dinner & Orientation
ILWACO From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29 all seventh and eighth grade students and their parents are invited for dinner at Ilwaco Middle High School. Dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by an orientation of the new middle school program at Ilwaco from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Meet the staff, have school pictures taken, sign up for athletics and band, and have any questions answered about the program.

OCEAN PARK A group of concerned citizens invite all who have an interest in the policies and future of South Pacific County Humane Society to attend the meeting of Friends of Shelter Animals on Wednesday, Aug. 29, beginning at 4 p.m. at Ocean Park Library Community Room. This is an inquiry group made up of many long term, former and current SPCHS members and volunteers who believe that the current Board of Directors are working outside the intention of the original by-laws of the shelter. On the agenda is the reinstatement of membership voting rights by proposing an amendment to the 2011 Bylaws which were voted on, approved and adopted by the seven member Voting Board without notice to or input from the membership. Raymond Library temp closed
RAYMOND The Raymond Timberland Library will be closed now through Sept. 10 for building repairs. The library will reopen at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Patrons may drop off materials at the outside book drop but no other library services will be available. ILWACO This years Timberland Book Sale is set for Friday, Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at a new location in the former Ilwaco High School atrium, adjacent to IHS football field. There is lots of room for lots of books, so come find some good reads! Watch for the signs and come to one of the best book sales of the year. Slow-Pitch ball
SOUTH BEND Softball teams are invited to play in a slow-pitch, wood bat softball tournament on Labor Day weekend. From Aug. 31 through Sept. 2, the South Bend will host Wood on the Willapa, an eight-team tournament to benefit Willapa Harbor Helping Hands and the Labor Day fireworks fund. The tournament structure is as follows: Friday evening and Saturday will be Round Robin play; Sunday is tournament play; four games guaranteed; $225 per team (13 player limit); bats and balls provided; championship T-shirts provided and participation is limited to first eight teams paid in full. Teams will play at the South Bend Community Park. The tournament is sponsored by Top Notch Tavern, Health Pros NW, Chester Club and Oyster Bar, Buds Lumber and Electric, Dennis Company and Pioneer Grocery. Vesper services
OYSTERVILLE The final Vesper service of the season is set for 3 p.m., Sept. 2 at the historic Oysterville church. Pastor John Indermark from United Church of Christ will preside over the gathering. PACIFIC COUNT All city, county and state offices, plus the banks, credit unions, post office branches as well as the Chinook Observer will be closed for the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 3. Offices will reopen on regular schedules on Tuesday. Have a safe and fun holiday and get ready for schools to reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

ILWACO Ilwaco Hilltop Bowl is starting fall leagues. The Coffee Breakers (three-person mixed teams) will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 9:30 a.m., and this league starts bowling Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. This is a great league for retired folks and people who dont want to drive at night. A new league, Wednesday Doubles, has a new format. Come to the meeting at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 12 for details. Bowlers of all skill levels are welcome on any league. Never bowled before? Dont worry if you dont have a ball or shoes, come on out anyway! There is a $17 annual membership fee and each league sets its own fees for bowling, but figure $12 to $15 per night. L/H Keepers benefit raffle
ILWACO The Keepers of the North Head Lighthouse are sponsoring a benefit raffle with the proceeds to be used to help restore the lighthouse. Tickets are $5 each for four great prizes. Tickets may be purchased at Adelaides in Ocean Park, The Picture Attic in Long Beach, Shoalwater Cove Gallery in Ilwaco, in the Cape Disappointment State Park stores in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and North Head Lighthouse grounds, and at the Saturday Market on Sept. 1. Head Start Preschool Enrollment
LONG BEACH Its that time of year again! Head Start is taking applications for preschool enrollment. Head Start serves low-income families with children from three-to-five years old, preparing them for entry into kindergarten. Beginning Sept. 20, classes will be held four days a week for three and a half hours a day. Breakfast and lunch are provided each day. There is no cost to eligible families. Adventure Day volunteers
OCEAN PARK WellSpring is sponsoring a training session for volunteers interested in helping with Adventure Day on Sept. 5 and Sept. 6 in Ocean Park. Adventure Day is a leadership and communication skill-building opportunity for sixth graders in the Ocean Beach School District. This training is free for participants helping with the Adventure Day program this fall. This training is essential for new facilitators and a great refresher for previous facilitators. Drill conductor course
ASTORIA A two-day drill conductor course on marine safety and survival training is being offered Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., each day at the Clatsop Community College Marine Sciences Building in Astoria. The course is free of charge and meets all the state and federal requirements for commercial fishermen. The topics of instruction include but are not limited to: personal safety gear, a personal safety kit, safety regulations, onboard drills, dewatering pumps, cold water survival skills, hypothermia, an in-water practicum and much more. ILWACO Ilwaco Timberland Library is hosting a session called Preserving 101, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 6 for adults. Educator Toni Gwin from the Washington State University Pacific County Extension will answer your questions on canning, pickling, drying and freezing. Need your pressure canner gauge tested? Wondering if grandmas applesauce is safe to eat? If you are taking the time to preserve, take the time to make it safe. ILWACO Its almost time again for the Slow Drag at the Port of Ilwaco, set for Friday, Sept. 7 from 4 p.m. to dark. Come test your skills and luck at this fun event, or just come watch the fierce, fun competition.
Rod Run
OCEAN PARK Its coming … the 29th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World is scheduled for Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 at Wilson Field in Ocean Park. The spectator gate opens at 8 a.m., with a variety of fun events scheduled throughout both days, including music, the show and shine, poker run and more. There will be a cruise after the show and shine, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 8. In addition, look for the barrels around the field for non-perishable canned food donations. In addition the city of Long Beach is providing free trolley rides from 3rd and Oregon streets in Long Beach departing at 9:30 a.m., and every 30 to 45 minutes both days, with the last trip to the field at 3 p.m., and the last trip from Ocean Park at 4:30 p.m.

OCEAN PARK September is National Preparedness Month. Ocean Park Timberland Library is hosting a session called Get Prepared Pacific County, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., Sept. 8 for adults. Join presenters from Pacific County Emergency Management to discuss how to take care of yourself and your family in a tsunami or other emergency. Learn how to make a family emergency plan and a survival kit for home or car, and leave with an emergency light jar. For more information call 665-4184.
Celebrating 65 years
OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Community Church at 268th and Vernon Avenue is celebrating 65 years of service in our community with a variety of events scheduled. On Sunday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m., everyone is welcome to gather for open heir worship, an outdoor church service with singing, testimony, prayer and devotion. This will be followed at 1 p.m., with an all-church barbeque potluck. The church will provide the main course barbeque and beverage. For those coming, bring a favorite supper dish to share. LONG BEACH On Sept. 11 at 6 p.m., the Long Beach Elks Lodge is holding an honorary dinner for all first responders. First responders include firefighters, law enforcement, emergency medical services, technical and surf rescue personnel, emergency personnel, Coast Guard. First Responders and their guest are invited to a free dinner that includes salmon, rice pilaf, Mediterranean vegetables, salad, roll and dessert. SURFSIDE The Ilwaco Sports Boosters are holding a fundraising golf tournament on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Surfside Golf Course. Registration is at 8 a.m., with the scramble-shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Teams consist of four players and the cost is $160 per team. Tee sponsor fees are $50. The fees include 18 rounds of golf with lunch. There will be awards for longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and more. LONG BEACH Beginning Monday, Sept. 24 and continuing each Monday through Nov. 5, the public is invited to participate in workgroup for parents and youth ages 10 to 14. There will be a wide range of topics for parents/caregivers including: making rules and consequences, solving problems, ways to show love and support and more. Youth will learn how to handle frustration, resist peer pressure, get along with others and more. Each session includes a free meal and childcare is available. Pre-register by calling 783-2356.
