Chinook Food Bank

    CHINOOK The Friends of Chinook School is sponsoring the Chinook Food Bank in the Chinook School building at 810 State Route 101 in Chinook. The food bank will be open on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call Loma at 777-8367 with questions.

Head Start Preschool Enrollment

    LONG BEACH  It is that time of year again! Head Start is taking applications for preschool enrollment. Head Start serves low-income families with children from three-to-five years old, preparing them for entry into kindergarten. Beginning Sept. 20, classes will be held four days a week for three and a half hours a day. Breakfast and lunch are provided each day. There is no cost to eligible families. C.G. Auxiliary

    CAPE D The Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 62 meets the first Wednesday of each month. This months meeting is Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Cape Disappointment. For information call Lee LaFollette at 665-6882.

Neptune Classic Movies

Thursday, Sept. 6

Drill conductor course

    ASTORIA A two-day drill conductor course on marine safety and survival training is being offered Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 from     7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., each day at the Clatsop Community College Marine Sciences Building in Astoria. The course is free of charge and meets all the state and federal requirements for commercial fishermen. The topics of instruction include but are not limited to: personal safety gear, a personal safety kit, safety regulations, onboard drills, dewatering pumps, cold water survival skills, hypothermia, an in-water practicum and much more. Preserving fruits/vegetables & more

    ILWACO  Ilwaco Timberland Library is hosting a session called Preserving 101, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 6 for adults. Educator Toni Gwin from the Washington State University Pacific County Extension will answer your questions on canning, pickling, drying and freezing. Need your pressure canner gauge tested? Wondering if grandmas applesauce is safe to eat? If you are taking the time to preserve, take the time to make it safe. If you cant make it on the Sept. 6, you can drop off your gauge early for testing. For more information call 642-3908.

Rebuilding Together

    PACIFIC COUNTY Rebuilding Together Pacific County is a safe housing organization that uses volunteers and donations to make the homes of low-income south county residents safe and warm. Friday, Sept. 7

Slow drag time

    ILWACO The Slow Drag at the Port of Ilwaco is set for Friday, Sept. 7 from 4 p.m. to dark. Participants line up to compete in a coasting competition. Cars have approximately 15 feet in which to accelerate and then coast for 200 yards. To win, a car must cross the finish line and stop closest to the line. Come test your skills and luck at this fun event, or just come watch the fierce, fun competition.

Farmers Market

    LONG BEACH This is the last market of the season. The Columbia Pacific Farmers Market is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 7 in downtown Long Beach. Come check out the wide variety of homegrown foods and flowers, and the onsite prepared goodies.  There will also be music by George Coleman and lots of fun so come downtown and enjoy.

Saturday, Sept. 8

Rod Run

    OCEAN PARK Its coming … the 29th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World is scheduled for Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 at Wilson Field in Ocean Park. The spectator gate opens at 8 a.m., with a variety of fun events scheduled throughout both days, including music, the show and shine, poker run and more. There will be a cruise after the show and shine, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 8. Also, look for the barrels around the field for non-perishable canned food donations. In addition, the city of Long Beach is providing free trolley rides from 3rd and Oregon streets in Long Beach departing at 9:30 a.m., and every 30 to 45 minutes both days, with the last trip to the field at 3 p.m., and the last trip from Ocean Park at 4:30 p.m.

David Irish in concert

    OCEAN PARK On Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., David Irish will be in concert at Ocean Park Community Church at 268th and Vernon Avenue in Ocean Park. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy his music and be blessed by his rich, tasteful message in song. The evenings activities will wrap up with campfire fun and fellowship.

Get prepared

    OCEAN PARK September is National Preparedness Month. Ocean Park Timberland Library is hosting a session called Get Prepared Pacific County, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., Sept. 8 for adults. Join presenters from Pacific County Emergency Management to discuss how to take care of yourself and your family in a tsunami or other emergency. Learn how to make a family emergency plan and a survival kit for home or car, and leave with an emergency light jar. For more information call 665-4184

    ILWACO Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco is open every Saturday, rain or shine, all summer long from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down and shop for farm fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, plants, flowers and all manner of seafood, or just enjoy a stroll along the waterfront in Ilwaco.

Celebrating 65 years

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Community Church at 268th and Vernon Avenue is celebrating 65 years of service in our community with a variety of events scheduled. On Sunday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m., everyone is welcome to gather for open heir worship, an outdoor church service with singing, testimony, prayer and devotion.  This will be followed at 1 p.m., with an all-church barbeque potluck.  The church will provide the main course barbeque and beverage. Events continue with a prayer and faith service in the afternoon. Local pastors and ministry team leaders will be bringing the word of hope, serving together, bringing messages of healing, offering the opportunity to have prayer for healings and more. Monday, Sept. 10

Come bowl!

    ILWACO Ilwaco Hilltop Bowl is starting fall leagues. A new league, Wednesday Doubles, has a new format. Come to the meeting at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 12 for details. Bowlers of all skill levels are welcome on any league. Never bowled before? Dont worry if you dont have a ball or shoes, come on out anyway! There is a $17 annual membership fee and each league sets its own fees for bowling, but figure $12 to $15 per night. Most leagues last 32 weeks. L/H Keepers benefit raffle

    ILWACO  The Keepers of the North Head Lighthouse are sponsoring a benefit raffle with the proceeds to be used to help restore the lighthouse. Tickets are $5 each for four great prizes. Tickets may be purchased at Adelaides in Ocean Park, The Picture Attic in Long Beach, Shoalwater Cove Gallery in Ilwaco and in the Cape Disappointment State Park stores in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and North Head Lighthouse grounds. Heroes Dinner

    LONG BEACH On Sept. 11 at 6 p.m., the Long Beach Elks Lodge is holding an honorary dinner for all first responders. First responders include firefighters, law enforcement, emergency medical services, technical and surf rescue personnel, emergency personnel and Coast Guard. First responders and their guest are invited to a free dinner that includes salmon, rice pilaf, Mediterranean vegetables, salad, roll and dessert. WellSpring meeting

Celebration continues

    OCEAN PARK On Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m., the special Ocean Park Community Church celebration commemorating 65 years of service at 268th and Vernon continues. The celebration includes prayer and praise, reflections and more. Village Missions Director Brian Wechsler will lead the service and there will be song to express gratitude for having been given the favor that has allowed this church to persevere and provide continuity of ministry in Ocean Park for more than six decades. Bunco

    KLIPSAN  Peninsula Bunco Club hosts a game the second Thursday of each month starting at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan Beach. The next game is Sept. 13. The public is welcome. Beach to Chowder marathon

    LONG BEACH  On Sept. 15 the Beach to Chowder half marathon is set. Participants run on the Discovery Trail through ocean dunes. There will be eight age divisions of competition, with many prizes awarded to top finishers. Clam chowder will be served at the awards ceremony in downtown Long Beach. Golf tournament

AAUW meeting

    PENINSULA Sarah Henry, general manager of the Columbia Pacific Farmers Market, will be the speaker at the chapter meeting of the Willapacific AAUW at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. Come find out more about the American Association of University Women, an organization of university women dedicated to education and community issues. AAUW sponsors non-partisan candidates and issues forums, a scholarship tea and bakes the pies for the Cranberrian fair. Willapacific also assists with exam costs and recognizes young women who excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Health Fair

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics is hosting a health fair from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the hospital. Speakers include Patty Malone, M.D., who will discuss Prevention and Screening Tests for Women; Mark Bonanno, J.D., M.P., who will talk about the importance of legal and medical paperwork and what everyone should know; and Neal Mathews, pharmacist, who will discuss carbohydrates, insulin resistance and weight gain. Plus there will be free basic hearing, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks and much more.

Military Officers gather

    HAMMOND  The Lower Columbia River Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will meet for dinner on Sunday, Sept. 16 at the South Jetty Dining Room at 1015 Pacific Drive in Hammond. Sports Boosters golf

    SURFSIDE The Ilwaco Sports Boosters are holding a fundraising golf tournament on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Surfside Golf Course.  Registration is at 8 a.m., with the scramble-shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Teams consist of four players and the cost is $160 per team. Tee sponsor fees are $50. The fees include 18 holes of golf with lunch. There will be awards for longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and more. Adult Basic Education/GED classes.

    ILWACO Fall quarter begins Sept. 17 at Grays Harbor Colleges Columbia Education Center in Ilwaco.  Adult Basic Education/GED preparation classes are offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Earn your GED certificate and improve your math, reading and writing skills to go to college. Strengthening families

    LONG BEACH  Beginning Monday, Sept. 24 and continuing each Monday through Nov. 5, the public is invited to participate in  workgroup for parents and youth ages 10 to 14. There will be a wide range of topics for parents/caregivers including: making rules and consequences, solving problems, ways to show love and support and more. Youth will learn how to handle frustration, resist peer pressure, get along with others and more. Each session includes a free meal and childcare is availble. Pre-register by calling 783-2356.
