ILWACO A king, a girl who is believed to have an incredible spinning skill, and a manipulative little man will bring audiences back to their childhood in the Peninsula Players newest presentation, Rumpelstiltskin. A musical production written and scored by Robert and Wilma Frankovich, Rumpelstiltskin is produced by Bill Nickila. Rumpelstiltskin, will be presented at the River City Playhouse at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 and Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sept. 29, with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23 and Sept. 30. No book donations
OCEAN PARK Due to construction at the Ocean Park Library, they cannot accept book donations from Sept. 21 until some later date. Take donations to the Ilwaco Library if you need to get rid of them or if at all possible, keep them until the Ocean Park Library once again has a place to hold them. If you have several boxes of books you can inquire at the library and they will give you a phone number to call where arrangements might be made for a Friends board member to pick them up.

Banjo band performs
RAYMOND Grays Harbor Banjo Band will perform a concert Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m., in the Raymond Theater. This concert is a fundraiser for the Pacific County 4-H shooting sports project. Tickets are $10 per seat and are available at the door and from any 4-H shooting sports members. Funds are being raised to send the county team to the state and national championships. The 4-H shooting sports project is open to youth between the ages of 8 and 19. From September through April adult 4-H shooting sports leaders are offering instructional events for rifle and maybe archery at the Willapa Harbor Gun Club. Youth do not have to be currently enrolled in 4-H to participate. To be kept informed on upcoming events, contact the Pacific County WSU Extension Office staff at 875-9331.
Faith in action
PENINSULA Three churches are canceling Sunday services on Sept. 23 for the third annual Faith in Action Be the Church event. Peninsula Baptist Church in Ocean Park, New Life Church and Pacific Bible Church in Ilwaco are going out into the community to serve. Project teams will meet at each church at 9 a.m. and serve until noon. There are between 12 and 14 project teams with 12 to 30 people needed on a team. To participate or for more information regarding Faith in Action on the Peninsula, you may call Peninsula Baptist Church at 665-5060, New Life Church, 642-3400 or Pacific Bible Church, 642-4844; or just come to one of the churches on Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. to serve. Lunch will be provided for all those serving.

Medicare open enrollment
KLIPSAN On Monday, Sept. 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., an informational meeting entitled, Preparing for Medicare Open Enrollment will take place at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan. Hosted by Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA), this free seminar is intended for those getting ready for Medicare or those who want to know more. Valley Bible Preschool
ROSBURG Classes for Valley Bible Preschool will begin with many little smiling faces coming through the doors on Monday, Sept. 24, at Valley Bible Church in Rosburg. Classes will be held each Monday and Wednesday for just under three hours per day. A healthy snack is offered each day. The preschool is a non-denominational Bible-based program that offers a well-rounded academic program along with the Bible-based learning approach. Children ages 3½ and potty trained, and older are welcome to attend. There are currently spaces available so if you have an eligible child, please contact Becky Erickson, teacher, at 465-2555 for more information about enrollment. Or, perhaps you are a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a neighbor or friend who would like to help sponsor a child financially so he/she can attend preschool. If so, please call Erickson for help through the simple process. Preschool is a great early step to building character and academic success for our future students.
Strengthening families
LONG BEACH Beginning Monday, Sept. 24 and continuing each Monday through Nov. 5, the public is invited to participate in workgroup for parents and youth ages 10 to 14. There will be a wide range of topics for parents/caregivers including: making rules and consequences, solving problems, ways to show love and support and more. Youth will learn how to handle frustration, resist peer pressure, get along with others and more. Each session includes a free meal and childcare is available. Pre-register by calling 783-2356. The cost is $35 but scholarships are available.

ILWACO Fall quarter has now begun at Grays Harbor Colleges Columbia Education Center in Ilwaco. Adult Basic Education/GED preparation classes are offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Earn your GED certificate and improve your math, reading and writing skills to go to college. NAMI meeting
LONG BEACH NAMIs September meeting will be from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in a barn off Sandridge, on the bay side. An appropriate location, Rescue, Rehabilitate, Rehome is the farm owned by Melanie Mills, who rescues horses and goats and is using them for therapy with children and young adults. Its especially helpful with depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Come listen to her relate what shes doing, and see how you would like to participate. Get prepared
PACIFIC COUNTY September is National Preparedness Month. Events are set for 6 p.m., Sept. 25 at Naselle Timberland Library and at 11 a.m., Sept. 29 at Ilwaco Timberland Library. There are several sessions for adults called Get Prepared Pacific County. Join presenters from Pacific County Emergency Management to discuss how to take care of yourself and your family in a tsunami or other emergency. Learn how to make a family emergency plan and a survival kit for home or car, and leave with an emergency light jar. For more information call 665-4184.
Family to Family class
LONG BEACH NAMI Family to Family course is a free 11-week program for family, household members and friends who want to understand, support and advocate effectively for a loved one who is affected by a mental health condition. The class is held each Tuesday for 11 weeks at 6 p.m., in the PUD conference room 6910 Sandridge Rd. Long Beach, with the instructors being Rosi Sartwell and Carole Wiegardt. Family to Family was the focus of a study over a four-year period by a University of Maryland psychiatrist and a psychologist. The conclusion was that the family members who participated in Family to Family classes showed that significantly overall empowerment as well as empowerment within their family, the service system and their community; greater knowledge of mental illness; higher rating of coping skills; lower ratings of anxiety related to being able to control conditions; and higher reported levels of problem-solving skills related to family functioning. Prescription drug take back
SEAVIEW On Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WellSpring Community Network, Long Beach Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to Sids at 4401 Pacific Way in Seaview. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Fundraising dinner & dance
ILWACO On Saturday, Sept. 29, there will be a dinner and dance at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The event is a benefit fundraiser for the Shedore family who are experiencing extreme medical challenges. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Imperial Schooner or at the door. On the menu is barbecued tuna with all the trimmings. Dinner is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and there will be music and dancing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Performing will be North Coast Blues with special guests, Skinny Lynn Cook, Maggie Kitson, Dave Gager and Holly Jeffrey.
Art show
LONG BEACH Peninsula Arts Association announces the opening of its 42nd Fall Art Show and Sale on Oct. 5. Running through Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, the show is located at the World Kite Museum, 303 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. Admission is free and parking is plentiful. The featured artist is Debra L. Kirk, winner of Best in Show at the Spring Art Show. She will present a retrospective of her art interests. LONG BEACH On Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Long Beach Elks Lodge, the Ocean Beach Education Foundation will hold their annual dinner and auction. This years theme is Wild, Wild West, with the goal of blazing the trail for students of Ocean Beach School District. One act auditions

Photography exhibit
SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall will be featuring an exhibit by local photographer Nick Deal, who has won many awards in photography at the Washington State Fair and other county fairs in Washington and Oregon. He has exhibited at many locations in Washington and Oregon including Redmen Hall last year, and was so popular he was asked back for a one-man exhibit. He is a young man who has a unique view of the environment, concentrating on the architecture of negative and positive space, giving us all a different way of seeing our world. The exhibit titled As I See It, will open on Saturday, Oct. 6 with a reception for the photographer at 1 p.m. The exhibit will run through the weekend of Nov. 17 and Nov. 18. ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics is hosting the next free workshop on Living Well with Chronic Conditions. Water Music Festival
PENINSULA Attend the 28th annual series of Water Music Festival concerts from Oct. 12 through Oct. 14. This years festival theme is Music of the Masters and WMF offers four concerts featuring outstanding performers such as the Miramont Trio, classical guitarist Scott Kritzer, the Golden Flute Chamber Trio, and Swing Fever. Voice of Democracy
PACIFIC COUNTY The National Veterans of Foreign Wars is proud to announce scholarship programs for students. The two programs, titled Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen are open to students in the sixth through 12th grades. Students enrolled in public, private or parochial schools, or a home study program are eligible to participate. VFW Chapter 3721, the local chapter, will be the focal point for entrants on the Long Beach Peninsula and Naselle. Entry forms are available at the local schools and can be obtained from the chapter by calling 665-3458 or 665-2513. Deadline for entries to the local chapter is Oct 30.
Photo Contest
PACIFIC COUNTY Camera enthusiasts are invited to submit entries to a fall photo festival sponsored by the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge. Closing date for pictures featuring refuge scenery and plants or local wildlife will be Nov. 2. There are three subject categories refuge scenes, wildlife and native flora. Entry photographs need to be 8×10 inches (preferably glossy print) and can be left at the Picture Attic located in Long Beach or at the Refuge office at 3888 State Route 101 in Ilwaco, along with the entry fee of $10. At the annual membership meeting on Nov. 10, the entries will be displayed and attendees will select their favorite. The first prize winner will be awarded $50, a years membership in the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge organization and display of the winning photo in 2013 Friends publications and on its website. Second and third place photographers will receive prizes of $30 and $20 respectively and a Friends T-shirt.
