Taste Washington Day

    NASELLE  On Sept. 26, the Naselle Grays River Valley School District will participate in Taste Washington Day as a way to celebrate agriculture in our state. The lunch menu on Taste Washington Day will include Washington baked potatoes, fresh blueberries from Cranguyma Farms in Long Beach and zucchini and summer squash grown by Freds Produce in Naselle. Please consider purchasing a school lunch on Sept. 26 to celebrate the bounty of delicious food grown in our state, and to show your support for our efforts to source locally grown foods for our students.

Love, talk play

    LONG BEACH Join in an evening full of simple, everyday ways to give babies and toddlers what they need to grow and learn lots of love, talk and play from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Sept. 26 at the Early Learning Center at 500 N. Washington in Long Beach. Activities are designed for parents, caregivers and children from birth through age 3. Libraries closed

    WASHINGTON  All Timberland libraries will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 26 for a staff training day. Libraries will resume regular schedules Thursday, Sept. 27. For more information call 877-284-6237.

Neptune Classic Movies

    LONG BEACH The Neptune Twin Cinemas offers family and classic movies with no charge for admission, subject to capacity. All family and classic shows begin at 1 p.m. The movie on Sept. 26 is Oliver, starring Ron Moody and Mark Lester. This film won six Academy awards, including Best Picture. 1968. 145 min.

No book donations

    OCEAN PARK Due to construction at the Ocean Park Library they cannot accept book donations at this time. Take donations to the Ilwaco Library if you need to get rid of them or if at all possible, keep them until the Ocean Park Library once again has a place to hold them. If you have several boxes of books you can inquire at the library and they will give you a phone number to call where arrangements might be made for a Friends board member to pick them up.

Rumpelstiltskin

    ILWACO  A king, a girl who is believed to have an incredible spinning skill, and a manipulative little man will bring audiences back to their childhood in the Peninsula Players newest presentation, Rumpelstiltskin. A musical production written and scored by Robert and Wilma Frankovich, Rumpelstiltskin is produced by Bill Nickila. Rumpelstiltskin, will be presented at the River City Playhouse at       7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29, with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. on Sept. 30. Salmon dinner

    OCEAN PARK  Ocean Park Lutheran Church located at 24002 U Street, is holding their annual salmon dinner and auction beginning at 5:30 p.m., on Sept. 28. Admission is $15. Tickets are available at the Imperial Schooner or they can be purchased at the church prior to the event. This fun evening includes a raffle, live and silent auctions and lots more. Fundraising dinner & dance

    ILWACO On Saturday, Sept. 29, there will be a dinner and dance at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The event is a benefit fundraiser for the Shedore family who are experiencing extreme medical challenges. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Imperial Schooner or at the door. On the menu is barbecued tuna with all the trimmings. Dinner is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and there will be music and dancing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Performing will be North Coast Blues with special guests, Skinny Lynn Cook, Maggie Kitson, Dave Gager and Holly Jeffrey.

Cornfeed

    BROWNSMEAD  On Saturday, Sept. 29 from 2 p.m. until          6 p.m., the annual Brownsmead Grange cornfeed will be held. This is such a wonderful event, you dont want to miss it. The cost is $8 for adults and $6 for children for 12 and under. Follow the signs from the Logger Restaurant 12 miles east of Astoria. Remember, two hours of volunteering at any of the jobs from shucking more than 1,200 ears of corn at 8:30 a.m., to serving corn out in the hall during the meal, earn a free ticket to eat. The full meal includes ham, mashed potatoes, bread and butter, applesauce, milk, ice cream bar, coffee, orange drink and all the corn you can eat.

Prescription drug take back

    SEAVIEW  On Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WellSpring Community Network, Long Beach Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to Sids at 4401 Pacific Way in Seaview. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Garage Sale

    KLIPSAN  From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 29, come to the Peninsula Senior Activity Center at 21603 Pacific Hwy in Klipsan, for their last garage sale of the season, and this one promises to be better than ever! Get prepared

    PACIFIC COUNTY September is National Preparedness Month. Get Prepared Pacific County for adults is set for 11 a.m., Sept. 29 at Ilwaco Timberland Library. Join presenters from Pacific County Emergency Management to discuss how to take care of yourself and your family in a tsunami or other emergency. Peace for children

    ASTORIA  At 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Performing Arts Center at 16th Street and Franklin Avenue in Astoria, there will be an event celebrating the United Nations International Day of Peace, with the theme Peace for the Children.     ILWACO This is the last week for the Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco. The market operates rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to         4 p.m. Come on down and shop for farm fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, plants, flowers and all manner of seafood, or just enjoy a stroll along the waterfront in Ilwaco.

Photo Contest

    PACIFIC COUNTY Camera enthusiasts are invited to submit entries to a fall photo festival sponsored by the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge. Closing date for pictures featuring refuge scenery and plants or local wildlife will be Nov. 2. There are three subject categories  refuge scenes, wildlife and native flora. Entry photographs need to be 8×10 inches (preferably glossy print) and can be left at the Picture Attic located in Long Beach or at the Refuge office at 3888 State Route 101 in Ilwaco, along with the entry fee of $10. At the annual membership meeting on Nov. 10, the entries will be displayed and attendees will select their favorite. First Prize winner will be awarded $50, a years membership in the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge organization and display of the winning photo in 2013 Friends publications and on its website. Second and Third place photographers will receive prizes of $30 and $20 respectively and a Friends T-shirt. Monday, Oct. 1

Strengthening families

    LONG BEACH  Continuing each Monday through Nov. 5, the public is invited to participate in  workgroup for parents and youth ages 10 to 14. There will be a wide range of topics for parents/caregivers including: making rules and consequences, solving problems, ways to show love and support and more. Youth will learn how to handle frustration, resist peer pressure, get along with others and more. Each session includes a free meal and childcare is availble. Pre-register by calling 783-2356. The cost is $35 but scholarships are available.

Beach Barons meeting

Adult Basic Education/GED

    ILWACO Fall quarter has now begun at Grays Harbor Colleges Columbia Education Center in Ilwaco.  Adult Basic Education/GED preparation classes are offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Earn your GED certificate and improve your math, reading and writing skills to go to college. Family to Family class

    LONG BEACH NAMI Family to Family course is a free 11-week program for family, household members and friends who want to understand, support and advocate effectively for a loved one who is affected by a mental health condition. Community Historian Project

    ILWACO  The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is hosting a 15-week project called Community Historian Project with the goal to develop a cohesive group of knowledgeable people who can be called upon for information and can become a heritage resource to their communities. The Community Historian Project consists of 15 weeks of one-day classes, speakers, tours, demonstrations and opportunities (January through April) followed by an additional 15 hours of advanced training. The museum is hosting the kick-off celebration on Friday, Oct. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a musical performance by Willapa Hills. This is the opportunity to learn more about the Community Historian Project and to obtain an application. Please RSVP to 642-446. The deadline for applications is Nov. 16.

OBEF dinner & auction

Harvest Swap & Knife Sharpening

    RAYMOND The Willapa Valley Grange, located at 290 Camp One Road in Raymond, is hosting a garden harvest swap on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. Then at 3 p.m., a knife sharpening demonstration will provide information, tools and techniques to return knives to optimal sharpness. After the demonstration, skilled Grange members are available to sharpen non-serrated knives, with a limit of two knives per person. Sharpening is by donation. Family Dance & Game Night

    RAYMOND As part of their 100th Anniversary celebration, on Saturday, Oct. 6, the Willapa Valley Grange, located at 290 Camp One Road in Raymond, is hosting a night of dance and game playing fun for the whole family! At 6 p.m., there will be a social hour, dance instruction and games, followed by dance and music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., in the auditorium and continued gaming in the dining room. Fall planting demo

    SURFSIDE Rain or shine, the annual Surfside fall planting event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. in Surfside on the office picnic grounds at 31402 H Street. Orchid Show & Sale

    SEASIDE The Sunset Empire Orchid Society has announced its 16th annual show and sale set for Saturday, Oct. 6 from noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Seaside Community Center at 1225 Ave. A Street in Seaside. General admission is $2 or $1 for seniors, with refreshments provided.  Everyone who pays admission receives a free raffle ticket for a chance to win a wonderful plant. Photography exhibit

    SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall will be featuring an exhibit by local photographer Nick Deal, who has won many awards in photography at the Washington State Fair and other county fairs in Washington and Oregon. He has exhibited at many locations in Washington and Oregon including Redmen Hall last year, and was so popular he was asked back for a one-man exhibit. He is a young man who has a unique view of the environment, concentrating on the architecture of negative and positive space giving us all a different way of seeing our world. The exhibit titled As I See It, will open on Saturday, Oct. 6 with a reception for the photographer at 1 p.m. The exhibit will run through the weekend of Nov. 17 and Nov. 18.     ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics is hosting the next free workshop on Living Well with Chronic Conditions. Invest in yourself and join this informative workshop to gain skills in managing symptoms such as pain, fatigue, sleep problems, depression or concerns for the future. Water Music Festival

    PENINSULA Attend the 28th annual series of Water Music Festival concerts from Oct. 12 through Oct. 14. This years festival theme is Music of the Masters and WMF offers four concerts featuring outstanding performers such as the Miramont Trio, classical guitarist Scott Kritzer, the Golden Flute Chamber Trio, and Swing Fever. Concert-goers will be treated to chamber music, light opera and swinging jazz from the 30s and 40s. Cranberrian Fair

    LONG BEACH  A celebration of local harvest including all things cranberry will take place on the Long Beach Peninsula, centered around the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Foods, crafters, bog tours and more will showcase the areas rich heritage during the annual Cranberrian Fair. Collectible buttons are $5 each and cover admission to all events at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The Cranberry Museum is free. The museum in Ilwaco will host a variety of vendors, offering handmade items such as pottery, jewelry, hand-turned wooden bowls, paintings, cranberry vine baskets, homemade peach/cranberry pies and more. The Cranberry Trolley runs on the hour from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum to the Cranberry Museum from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Chinook Tribe meeting

    ASTORIA  The Chinook Tribal Council meets on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m., at Fort Clatsop in the Netul Room, in Astoria. Tribal members are encouraged to attend. Oktoberfest

    CHINOOK Friends of the Chinook School are hosting the eighth annual Oktoberfest Chinook Style at the Chinook School gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 20. Dinner and the silent auction run from 5 p.m. to    8 p.m., and the live auction is set to start at 8:15 p.m. Tickets for adults are $20; tickets for children under 12 years old are $10, and all are available at the door. Enjoy a superb German-style food menu, a wine raffle and life music by the Beach Buddies. All proceeds benefit the restoration of the Chinook School building.

Voice of Democracy

    PACIFIC COUNTY  The National Veterans of Foreign Wars is proud to announce scholarship programs for students. The two programs, titled Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen, are open to students in sixth through 12th grades. Students enrolled in public, private or parochial schools, or a home study program are eligible to participate. VFW Chapter 3721, the local chapter, will be the focal point for entrants on the Long Beach Peninsula and Naselle. Entry forms are available at the local schools and can be obtained from the chapter by calling 665-3458 or 665-2513. Deadline for entries to the local chapter is Oct 30.
