Positive community norms

    SEAVIEW  From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16, anyone interested in learning more about changing social norms around youth substance use, mental health, or other wellness topics in our community is encouraged to attend the Positive Community Norms Training at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. Chinook Food Bank

    CHINOOK Shiloh Faith Fellowship will operate the Chinook Food Bank the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Sea Resources building (Chinook Hatchery) in Chinook until further notice. If you have questions call 777-8373.

Dine out for cats & dogs

    SEAVIEW The South Pacific County Humane Society is holding Wednesday community fund nights at 42nd Street Café in Seaview from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The 42nd Street Café will donate 10 percent of any purchase that evening. The guest just needs to tell their server they are a member of SPCHS to have their purchase counted to benefit the humane society. Plus for $1 you can purchase a raffle ticket all during the month of February for a chance to win a special prize. For more information call 642-2444.

Al Anon family group

    SEAVIEW  An Al Anon family group meets from 6:30 p.m. to       7:30 p.m., each Wednesday at 4603 Pacific Highway in Seaview. The group is open to anyone who has been affected by alcohol and/or drug use in a family member or friend. For information call 642-2611.

Free tax help

    OCEAN PARK Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2011 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11. No appointment is needed this is a sign in and wait your turn service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2011), plus a copy of all 2010 tax records/return. Neptune Classic Movies

    ILWACO Thanks to the generous support of the Port of Ilwaco, visit the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco on Thursdays free of charge. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Bring the family and come see what treasures our local museum has to offer.

Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners is at 5 p.m. intermediate dancing starts at 6 p.m.; and couples hit the floor at 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Backyard bird count

    PACIFIC COUNTY  It is time to count birds during the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Anyone can participate in this free event and no registration is needed. Watch and count birds for at least 15 minutes on any day of the count, between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20. Enter your results at www.birdcount.org, where you can watch as the tallies grow across the continent. The four-day count typically records more than 10 million observations. If you need assistance in submitting your count, dont use the computer, call Patricia Cruse at 642-1310.

Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Feb. 17 through Feb. 18, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition.

Al Anon family group

    KLIPSAN  An Al Anon family group meets from 1:30 p.m. to      2:30 p.m., every Friday in the conference room at Golden Sands at 21608 O Lane in Klipsan. The group is open to anyone who has been affected by alcohol use in a family member or friend. For information call 665-2510.

Saturday, Feb. 18

Spaghetti feed

    CHINOOK On Feb. 18 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Chinook Volunteer Fire Department invites the public to the Chinook School gym for a spaghetti feed to raise funds to help offset the medical bills and care for Dan Todd, local firefighter who suffered a stroke recently. There is a minimum $10 per person donation.

Naselle library temp closed

    NASELLE  The Naselle Timberland Library will be closed through Saturday, Feb. 18 for the installation of new carpet. Books and other library materials that are due back to the library during the closure will be extended until the library reopens on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The book drop will be available to return library materials.

Bird Count at Refuge

    LONG BEACH Come help ensure the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge birds are included in The Great Backyard Bird Count on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Tarlatt Unit located at the end of 95th Road off Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Event participants will have the opportunity to learn how to use a spotting scope, binoculars and field guides, as well as identify local birds in a variety of refuge habitats. No experience necessary. Members of the Shoalwater Birders, Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge and refuge staff will serve as guides for this fun and rewarding bird count. Family movie

    ILWACO  Ilwaco Timberland Library presents Family Movies at the Library, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 18 for all ages. Bring your comfortable pillows and blankets, have some popcorn and watch a movie. Movie rentals and refreshments provided by the Friends of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park Timberland Libraries. Mardi Gras

    LONG BEACH The public is invited to the Long Beach Elks for their annual membership drive, dinner and dance on Feb. 18 at 110 N. Pacific Hwy. The evening includes a New Orleans style crawfish boil, alligator and potluck side dishes. The cost is $5 per person with a side dish or $10 per person without, and includes live music, dancing, games, a psychic palm reader and more. Call 642-2651 if you have questions.

    OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays. Brown pelicans

    FORT CLATSOP  At 1 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 19 in the Netul River room of the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center, Deborah Jaques will be talking about the history of brown pelican occurrence in the Columbia River region, the general ecology of the species, and current pelican research and management topics on the West Coast. Jaques is a wildlife biologist at Pacific Eco Logic, based in Astoria. She specializes in applied research, monitoring, and management of Pacific coast waterbirds and their habitat. Taco feed fundraiser

    LONG BEACH The public is welcome to come to a taco feed to support Peninsula Young Life Club from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Feb. 19. Ocean Beach Christian Fellowship (behind Cottage Bakery in Long Beach) is hosting the event, which include tacos, rice and beans and all the trimmings served by local teens. The meal is by donation with all proceeds to benefit teen club activities, events and camp scholarships. If you have questions, call Coral Hughes 665-3206.

The Heart of the Museum

    ILWACO  The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum has received a wide array of gifts over the past several years, from gift wrap imprinted with the Ilwaco Rail & Navigation Company locomotive, to a sled made from Columbia River Packing Association crates and many more. While they are not able to display all the wonderful donations to the museum, a cross-section of recent donations will be part of a special exhibition showing now through March 11.

Monday, Feb. 20

AAUW meeting

    ILWACO  The regular meeting of the AAUW will take place Monday Feb. 20 at 7 p.m., at the Ilwaco Community Building. This meeting will focus on education in our local area and David Tobin, principal of Ilwaco High School, will speak and answer questions concerning the challenges ahead. The Willapacific Branch of the American Association of University Women is dedicated to the encouragement of young women in education and achievement through community action and scholarships. Women in Business

    ILWACO  On Feb. 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Women in Business meet at Queen La De Das at the Port in Ilwaco for a discussion on social networking with Nansen Malin. Malin will share how to take a business Facebook page to the next level. Shell also be demonstrating several new features Facebook has to offer. Bring your pen or laptop! Chair Yoga

    RAYMOND  Senior Chair Yoga with instructor Tina Jaffe happens each Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Pacific County Senior Center, 324 Jackson Street in Raymond. Yoga will be done in a chair and will be uncomplicated for seniors. Attendees should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. This is open to men and women, ages 60 years and over. Bunco for kids food

    LONG BEACH Each Monday at 6:30 p.m., a fundraiser for the Long Beach Elks sponsored Food4Kids Program will be held. Everyone is welcome to come play bunco, with proceeds going to help purchase food for a backpack of healthy food and snacks to get kids through the weekend.

Pancake supper

PAA meeting

    LONG BEACH  Peninsula Arts Association is holding their general membership meeting at 6 p.m., Feb. 21 in the event room of the Adrift Hotel at 409 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. The upcoming Spring Art Show will be a topic of the business meeting. The program for the evening will be Art du Couer (Art of the Heart). Whether it will be found object art, assemblage art or steampunk art, it will be a hands-on experience with an opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Do Nothing Club

    OCEAN PARK Break away from the humdrum of everyday life and do absolutely nothing for a few hours as part of the Do Nothing Club. Breakfast for pets

    LONG BEACH  On Saturday, Feb. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the Long Beach Elks is hosting a Beach Pets breakfast for the benefit of our animal shelter. The cost for the meal will be $5. Oceans of Hope

    PENINSULA February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and on Saturday, Feb. 25, the community is invited to enjoy dinner together as a way to support a local domestic violence prevention organization. The Domestic Violence Awareness Projects Oceans of Hope benefit dinner will be hosted at two participating restaurants Tuscany Café at the Port of Ilwaco and The Crab Pot in Long Beach. Both restaurants will feature Oceans of Hope specials and will serve their regular menu items as well. Up to 10 percent of each entrée will be donated to the Domestic Violence Awareness Project for domestic violence awareness, education and prevention efforts. Hoop Houses

    RAYMOND  From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 25, the Willapa Valley Grange, located at 290 Camp One Road in Raymond is hosting an event about using hoop houses to increase a gardens yield and extend the growing season. A hoop house will be displayed to show features and functionality. Hoop house kits, including PVC frame, greenhouse film and clips, may be purchased in advance for $60. Following the free instructional talk, assembly of purchased 3-foot by 6-foot kits will be demonstrated and assisted. Peninsula Players meet

    ILWACO  Peninsula Players are holding their annual meeting on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m., at the River City Playhouse at 127 Lake Street S.E., in Ilwaco. Talking tsunamis

    LONG BEACH  Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is giving two presentations regarding tsunamis to provide information about what they are and how they function, evacuation, the warning system and much more beginning at 6 p.m., on Feb. 28 at the Pacific County administration facility at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach and on March 8 at the commissioners meeting room at 1216 W. Bigfoot discussion

    LONGVIEW  Join Willapa Hills Audubon on March 10, for Dr. Robert Michael Pyles presentation Still Walking: Bigfoot in the Dark Divide and Beyond. This will be a discussion of his book on the search for Sasquatch in Washington and some exciting developments that have occurred since its publication. The public is invited to arrive at 7 p.m., for socializing and snacks, and to participate in the silent auction if they wish. Tempest in a Teapot

    LONG BEACH  The American Association of University Women presents Treasures of Time, a historical afternoon theatre celebrating National Womens History Month. This year we will be featuring A Tempest in a Teapot, a representation of the use of tea and the women who served it throughout history. The tea will take place Saturday, March 10 from      11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. Tickets are $20 per person or $10 for children 12 years old and under and are available at Okies Thriftway and at Ocean Park Pharmacy or Long Beach Pharmacy, or by mailing a check to AAUW, P.O. Daylight saving

    U.S.A. Turn your clocks ahead one hour for the beginning of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m., on Sunday, March 11. Fire departments encourage you to change the batteries in your smoke detectors at the same time.

Art show entries

    LONG BEACH Entries are being accepted for Peninsula Arts Association 21st Spring Art Show. The deadline to enter is March 13, and all participants must be current members of PAA. Twenty-three art show categories offer opportunities for artists of all media to exhibit and compete for ribbons at the popular and well respected exhibition, running March 30 through April 1, at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. PAA membership costs $20 per year. Art show entries are $5 each and are limited to three per adult artist. Students may also join the organization and enter art in the show. Student participation is free and limited to two entries. PAA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit supporting an annual high school scholarship award and art enrichment program.
