Authors Showcase

    ILWACO The fourth Wednesday of each month, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Olde Towne Trading Post in Ilwaco hosts a gathering of writers and listeners. Everyone is welcome to come share and hear original stories and poems in progress, or perhaps even some previously published. The theme this month is poetry share any form, style or topic. Grief support

Food bank openings

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Food Bank has a few volunteer openings.  Volunteers are needed help on the first Wednesdays of each month to move cases of food around following our monthly delivery.  In addition a few people are needed as occasional back-up help distributing food during business hours. Neptune Classic Movies

Fairy tea party

    RAYMOND On April 26 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Raymond Timberland Library will host a fairy tea party for children. Discover the enchanted world of the fairy folk.     ILWACO  Ilwaco Toastmasters group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., the first and third and fifth Thursdays of each month at the Ilwaco Community Building. Line dancing

    LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners is at 5 p.m. intermediate dancing starts at 6 p.m.; and couples hit the floor at 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. OBH support group

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group meets Friday, April 27, at 2 p.m. in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule, a member of the hospitals chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. Alice in Wonderland Jr.

    NASELLE The Naselle High School drama club is putting on another musical production directed by Barb Swanson. This year it is Walt Disneys Alice in Wonderland, Jr. based on the 1951 Disney version of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. There are 40 cast members from Naselle schools in grades six through 12 including Alice, the Cheshire cat, the white rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March hare, the Queen of Hearts, the King of Hearts, the caterpillar, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Performance dates are April 27, April 28 and April 29 and May 5 and May 6. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 3 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. For more information call Swanson at 484-3602.

Fishing derby

    ILWACO  The 20th Annual Black Lake Fishing Derby is set for April 28 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Registration and a free pancake breakfast begins at 7 a.m., the last registration will be accepted at 9:45 a.m., and the final fish weigh-in is at 9:45 a.m. Awards and prizes will be distributed at 10:30 a.m., followed by hot dogs and sodas at 11 a.m. Register online at www.ilwaco-wa.gov or call 642-3145.

Cruise Reunion Car Show

    WARRENTON  The Lower Columbia Classic Car Club is hosting the 50s Cruise Reunion Car Show on Saturday, April 28 at Camp Rilea in Warrenton. The show starts at 9 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m. The cost is $2 per person, with children age 12 and under admitted free with an adult. All military personnel can attend free. There will be more than 200 classic vehicles on hand, including three historic Mack fire engines. Everyone is welcome. Beach Baron Car Club will be cruising to the 50s Cruise as a club. English Tea & Plant Sale

    CATHLAMET  An exhibition of antique and heirloom items relating to tea will be a special feature of the 4th annual English Tea and Plant Sale to be held at St. James Family Center at 1134 Columbia Street in Cathlamet on April 28. Tea service begins at noon and ends at 3:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Tickets are $12 and may be purchased by calling 795-8612. Five beautiful baskets with themes such as Kitchen Kaboodie, Tea for Company, Serenity Spa, Butterflies-Birds-Blooms and Summer Afternoon will be raffled off. Tickets for the raffle baskets are $1 each. The plant sale will include a variety of indoor and outdoor palnts. A master gardener will be on hand to answer questions. All proceeds from this event go to help support various programs at St. James.

Priscilla Circle Salad Luncheon

    NASELLE Saturday, April 28 is the date for the annual salad luncheon at the Naselle Lutheran Church located at 308 Old Knappton Road in Naselle, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Priscilla Circle will once again offer an array of salads for your enjoyment with a donation of $7. The Lutheran bakers will have a variety of goods to offer including Finnish delicacies.  Quilts and a number of handcrafted items have been promised for the craft room.  Alfred Simukka has been busy tending to over 400 tomato plants for the gardener.     OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays. Art show

    ILWACO  Ilwaco High School art department is holding their annual art show, presenting work from students at beginning level up through advanced, freshmen through seniors. Viewers of the show will have the opportunity to vote for the Peoples Choice award in two categories: Two-dimensional artwork and three-dimensional artwork. The show will run through April 29 in the main gallery at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and they are closed Mondays.

Flower baskets

    PENINSULA The Ilwaco High School class of 2012 continues to sell flower bowls and baskets. Prices for hanging baskets are $28 each or two or more $25 each; 14-inch flower bowls are $20 each or $18 for two or more bowls. All proceeds benefit the Class of 2012 Substance Free Graduation Party. Plants will be available for pick up mid-May. Bunco for kids food

    LONG BEACH Each Monday at 6:30 p.m., the public is invited to come play bunco, a fundraiser for the Long Beach Elks sponsored Food4Kids Program. Everyone is welcome, with proceeds going to help purchase food to help fill a backpack with healthy food and snacks to get local needy kids through the weekend.

    RAYMOND Raymond Timberland Library presents e-reader roadshow from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., May 3 for adults and teens. Get the lowdown on downloadable e-books available from the library. A short presentation will walk you through the basic steps to borrow e-books. After the talk, individuals will have a chance to try out some e-readers and other mobile devices. Library staff will be on hand to consult with patrons who already own devices or are in the process of deciding whether to buy one. Loyalty Days

    PENINSULA On Saturday, May 5 there will be a kids parade in downtown Ilwaco starting at noon. Come watch the parade, then enjoy the blessing of the fleet from the Port of Ilwaco at 1 p.m. The Long Beach Elks Club is serving an oyster feed from noon to 5 p.m., and finally the honors banquet takes place at 7 p.m., t the Elks Lodge. Then on Sunday, May 6, a cowboy breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Peninsula Saddle Club. There will be fire truck rides for kids from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., a the Ilwaco Fire Hall. And finally the main parade starts at 1 p.m., in Long Beach with the Coast Guard fly over. This is a great community weekend for all to enjoy.

Market to open

    ILWACO Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco open May 5 and will be open every Saturday, rain or shine, all summer long from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down and shop for farm fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, plants, flowers and all manner of seafood, or just enjoy a stroll along the waterfront in Ilwaco.

Spring tea & luncheon

    ROSBURG On Sunday, May 6, the Grays River Friendship Circle will hold its 10th anniversary Spring Tea and Luncheon. This is a change in date, as the tea is usually held on a Sunday later in the month. It will be held at the Rosburg Community Hall off Highway 4. The theme this year is, Even Some Cowboys Drink Tea. Homespun entertainment of music and poetry will be provided by Joel and Noreen Fitts of Grays River. Women of the Grays River United Methodist Church sponsor this event as a fundraiser for the Friendship Circles special projects. The suggested donation is $8 each at the door. Doors open at noon. The luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. with the program to follow. This event attracts people from far and near to visit with old and new friends, enjoy an exciting program, and explore a table full of raffle prizes to be chosen later by the winners. Raffle tickets are only a $1 each. A special raffle will be held for a beautiful silver, semi-precious stone necklace. The luncheon consists of tea savories, delicacies, and desserts. SmileMobile coming to town

    PENINSULA The Washington Dental Service Foundation SmileMobile will offer dental examinations to children who might not otherwise have access to dental care. Children ages birth through high school, with limited access to care, can be scheduled by calling Kristi Curtis at the Ocean Beach Early Childhood Center before May 4 at 642-5471. The SmileMobile will be located at the head start office at 2611 N. Pacific Hwy., in Long Beach from May 7 through May 11 and then at Ilwaco Middle/High School at 400 School Road in Ilwaco from May 14 through May 18. Medicaid and sliding scale fees will be accepted as reimbursement for services.

MERTS Campus open house

    ASTORIA On May 8, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., everyone is invited to an open house at Clatsop Community Colleges Marine and Environmental Research and Training Station (MERTS) campus. This exciting one-day event includes fun activities for all ages, demonstrations, vendor displays, and a free barbecue from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The campus houses the colleges maritime science department, fire response and research center, the living machine and the industrial and manufacturing technology center including automotive technology, welding, computer-aided design and drafting, and historic preservation and restoration. All programs will feature displays and interactive demonstrations, and tours of colleges training vessel M/V Forerunner will be conducted.  Visitors can also climb the U.S. Army National Guard rock wall, watch blacksmiths at work, and view classic cars and street rods. American Legion meetings

    ILWACO The Don R. Grable American Legion and Auxiliary Post and Unit No. 48 meet on Tuesday, May 8, at 6.p.m. in the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Ducks Unlimited banquet

    ASTORIA  The North Coast Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Committee is starting preparations for the 35th Annual Fundraising Banquet scheduled for Saturday, May 12 at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. This is a month or two later than the usual banquet date to reduce conflicts with other local hunter or conservation group fundraisers. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of Ducks Unlimiteds efforts in the conservation and restoration of wetlands and related benefits to wildlife and fisheries. New committee members would be most welcome  contact George Baker at 505-325-7960  as would members of the Long Beach Peninsula DU Chapter. You would need to pay only the $25 dinner cost.  Regular ticket price is $45 and tickets are available from Jennifer Biamont at 503-738-5580.  Currently a limited number of $20 raffle tickets for a Kimber 300 Win Mag are available at Links Outdoors in Astoria or from committee members.  More details on the May 12 event will be available soon.

Fashion show fundraiser

    CHINOOK Ocean Beach Hospital Foundation is hosting its Second Annual Spring Fashion Show: Styles from Vintage to Modern, Saturday, May 12, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chinook School Gymnasium in Chinook. Doors open early for seating. The event is a benefit for patient care and treatment programs. Guests are encouraged to dress the part and come in their favorite fashions. Lunch will be served; prizes awarded, and raffle baskets available as well. Tickets are $20 each or a table for six is $100.  Ticket price includes entry to the show and lunch. Choir practice

    NASELLE On Saturday, May 12, at 9 a.m., Cliff Weimer will begin rehearsing with the Finnish-American Chorus at the Naselle School music room. All singers are invited, even if you have never sung with us before. The group will perform at this years Finnish-American Festival, set for July 27 through July 29.

Folk art exhibit

    ILWACO A folk art exhibition, organized by the Washington State Historical Societys Traveling Exhibition Service, which includes 14 informative panels on the folk artists of Washington state, will be on display at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco from May 18 through July 29. This particular program focuses on traditional folk arts as expressed in handmade objects as well as in performance arts such as music, song, dance, and storytelling. Our region is represented by Wilho Saari of Naselle. Saari is a kantele player in the tradition of his Finnish ancestors who has a wide knowledge of the history of the kantele, as well as a sincere commitment to many other aspects of Finnish folklore. The kantele generally has from 15 to 40 metal strings and produces a harp or bell like sound. He will present a concert during the exhibition opening on Friday, May 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Garlic Festival seeks local vendors

    OCEAN PARK The Northwest Garlic Festival is looking to shake things up a bit. Known over the years for everything garlic, (including ice cream), the festival planners are working to increase another aspect of the event local seafood cuisine and hand crafted merchandise. The 2012 Garlic Festival runs June 16 and June 17, and is located at Wilson Field, just two blocks south of Bay Avenue on Sandridge Road in Ocean Park.  Vendors and artisans may register for a booth through the OPACCs website, www.opwa.com, or by stopping in at the Chamber office Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., (1715 Bay Avenue, Ocean Park). A 10 x 10 site costs $100 for the two-day, outdoor event.  Sites with electricity run $125. There are discounts for multiple spaces and the deadline to register and pay is May 23, or until all spaces are filled. In order to participate in the annual festival, vendors and artisans are required to sell items inspired by garlic and are urged to keep the festival motto in mind, Its Chic to Reek. Because the festival limits the number of booths carrying similar merchandise, it is best to register early to guarantee a spot. Call For Art, Garlic Poster Contest

    OCEAN PARK  Peninsula Arts Association announces the opening of this years Northwest Garlic Festival Poster Contest. This is the third year PAA has run the poster contest for the Ocean Park Area Chamber event. The 31st NW Garlic Festival Poster will be a limited, signed edition of 100, packaged in a protective clear bag with a backing board and certificate of authenticity. The contest is open to the public with a cash prize of $150 (and two posters) awarded to the winning artist. Entry forms are available on PAAs website www.beachartist.org, or may be picked up at the OPA Chamber Office (1715 Bay Ave, Ocean Park), Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 pm. The deadline for entries is May 15. The winning artist must be available to sign printed posters before a June 8 reception for the poster reveal. This reception, held at Lighthouse Realty in Ocean Park, will be the first time collectors may purchase the hard to get, low numbered editions.  Complete contest information is available on PAAs website or by calling 665-6041. This years festival will be expanding participation from local seafood restaurants and artists are encouraged to keep this in mind when creating their entries.
